Reinvent stories and learning for kids with Polk Street Press, NYTimes bestselling author Deborah Underwood, and artist Luciana Powell.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Imagine apps that engage children’s imagination, curiosity, and intellect. Picture stories that come alive on screen and allow children to be part of the action. At Polk Street Press, we’re creating children's apps that do just that. The apps that we’re building combine original, interactive storytelling with learning and exploration.
In January 2012, Polk Street Press released our first storybook app, Goodnight Safari, to a quarter of a million downloads and rave reviews from parents around the globe. But we were just getting started. For our next app, we are teaming with award-winning author Deborah Underwood and acclaimed illustrator Luciana Navarro Powell to create the story of Spatter & Spark which combines innovative interactive digital technologies with fun and effective storytelling.
Spatter the porcupine is an artist who sees the beauty of the world around him and wants to share it with others. His friend, Spark the fox, loves to create inventions and solve problems – though as kids will discover, sometimes her inventions might cause more problems than they solve! Despite their differences, Spatter and Spark are best friends because they appreciate each other’s strengths and rely on one-another for help when they need it.
“I’m excited about doing a story that involves a girl inventor,” explains author Deborah Underwood. “When I was a little kid, I loved to invent things, and I wish I would have had some female inventor role models. So I’m thrilled to help bring this story to life.”
Spatter & Spark invites children to paint with Spatter, invent with Spark, and help the pair get out of trouble. The app will be FREE to download so that more children can enjoy this well-crafted, interactive story. We will fund the remainder of the development and give parents the opportunity to extend the learning through paid stand alone activities featuring the characters from the stories. These activities will encourage learning with fun mini-games introducing colors, counting, and animals as well as provide a space for free form creativity.
Our apps for the iPad and iPhone are written, illustrated, and engineered with children and parents in mind. These stories challenge children to solve problems, invite them to explore new lands, and help them unwind from a busy day.
There are lots of kids apps out there, but very few have the beautiful artwork and engaging stories that you would expect from a compelling bedtime picture book. Even fewer have interactivity that is meaningful, fun, and fully embraces the potential of touch screens. The apps from Polk Street Press aren’t just digital spaces for children to learn and play – they incorporate wonderful storytelling with colorful pictures that seem to pop right off the screen and into your child’s imagination.
We believe all of our children should develop a love of reading and learning - we hope you do too!
We’re seeking funding for our new app, Spatter & Spark (available December 2012), to help us create the art and animation, as well as procure educational experts and programmers, voice talent, original music, and sound effects.
What We Have

What We Need
Polk Street Press dreams big, but is starting small. We need your help to create the apps we know you want for your children. Your support will pay for all the elements that go into making an original iPhone and iPad app like this a reality. Money raised through Kickstarter will support art creation, animation, educational consultants, digital programmers, voice talent, original music, and sound effects.
For those of you who may not be familiar with Kickstarter, it's a powerful platform that allows people to raise money to fund creative projects from individuals who support their vision. If we don't hit our goal, we don't get any money - so we need your help to fund this project and spread the word!
We know that Kickstarter supporters are interested in pushing the boundaries of storytelling and hope you will consider helping fund this project. We have lots of fun rewards for supporting us - all the details are below and in the sidebar. With your help, we can bring Spatter & Spark to the iPad and iPhone and inspire more children to engage with stories in an exciting new way! Thank you for your support!
