We started our business www.cowleysfinefood.com from our home in South Wales over 10 years ago, with the aim of providing a comprehensive range of healthy alternative snack food. About 6 years ago we appeared on BBC 1's Dragons Den in an effort to raise investment for the business, It didnt go as we planned but ended up being told our business wouldn't work. SIX YEARS LATER!! we are going from strength to strength, though now in need of additional investment without approaching the conventional finance system in which we have no confidence.
We were inspired to set up our business by our passion for quality food made from foraged and naturally farmed local produce. We had been participating in historical re-enactments for several years and saw a natural niche in the market for historically-based products. We started making jerky - naturally dried meat snacks - for family and friends, and it proved very popular.
We started taking a stall to summer shows and festivals, and sold jerky and fruit scrolls (made of pure fruit!). Customers loved our products, and we now make a huge range of healthy snacks and sell our wares at events all over the UK, and online.
Having started with making and selling jerky, biltong and fruit leathers, we now make and offer a wider range of delicious foodstuffs (including vegan options!) such as smoked cheeses, smoked peanut butters, relishes and pickles, some made to authentic historical recipes, all made using natural processes and without unnecessary chemicals, gums,
preservatives etc. that are commonly found in commercial brands. All our marinades are also made in-house using only fresh ingredients - we avoid using artificial flavourings or sweeteners.
In the wake of the recent horse-meat scandal in the UK we launched a new range of horse-meat jerky called “My Brittle Pony” which has proved incredibly popular and has attracted press attention. We also offer products made from other unusual meats such as rabbit… and recently launched “Pet a Manger”, a plain chicken jerky designed as a treat for pet cats and dogs as well as making the Worlds Hottest Jerky
We attend a wide range of festivals and historical re-enactments every year, not only selling our wares but giving demonstrations of historical food preparation and preserving foods with an authentic smoker.
We also offer skinning and butchery courses at least twice a year where participants not only get to learn the skills of how to make the most of their animal but also get the chance to make their own sausages and jerky to take home.
We handle all aspects of food production ourselves, including the marinating, drying and smoking in our custom built workshop in our home.
Now, down to the nitty gritty: we need new equipment so we can make even more of our tasty, homemade foods. We need to raise at least £5500 for four new dryers and a vacuum sealer to prepare and package tasty treats for customers old and new. Over the last couple of years, despite our hard work and expanding business, we have been challenged mightily. The ( lack of ) summer has seriously and negatively impacted our show sales. We found ourselves at flooded and cancelled shows - doing little to no trade which is where most of our income is generated. This motivated us to focus on, and develop wholesale orders. More recently, a fire in our commercial kitchen destroyed 1 of our dryers. Luckily, it was contained quickly and no stock was damaged. We do however need to replace and repair equipment before we run out of the yummy stuff ! That's where you guys come in. To reach our goal would allow us to continue to trade uninterrupted and take on larger wholesale orders, securing the future of our beloved family business. Should we surpass our goal, any extra funds would be used simply - to buy even more dryers and sealers ! Cos there is no such thing as too much jerky !
Risks and challenges
We have aging machinery and we need to replace it urgently in order to sustain our sales base. Given our increasing sales to wholesalers such as breweries, for a unique jerky made with the breweries' own beer, the expansion of our business in this direction this is an urgent needLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
