Four years ago I moved to Brooklyn to pursue a bachelors of industrial design from Pratt Institute. In that time, I've found a love for handcrafting furniture. Stringback, is the culmination of a years work, born on many sleepless nights, intense coffee abuse, and a channeled interest in design. I am very excited to be on Kickstarter to offer Stringback to a larger audience and support the Made in America Movement. I think you will really like my chair, and would love even more for you to sit in it!
My goal with this first collection is to build ten more Stringback chairs. With hopes of producing an entire collection of handmade American furniture. With your help and support we can make that dream a reality!
Inspired by wingback-form language, and rendered with relaxed modernity Stringback merges functional ergonomics with one of a kind details. Unique to Stringback is a stunning display of bi-directional weaving where the complex weave creates a display of dynamic and physical tension.
In terms of finishes, the choice is up to you! For the customers of Stringback I offer the chance to fully customize your chair, match your style and decor. Create your own unique Stringback chair with key features:
- Choice of Hard Wood
- Choice of Cord Color
- Inclusion of Felt and or Color
These three options represent the highest quality of construction from a handcrafted piece of furniture.
In terms of colors, the power is in your hands. Sourced from Columbia Basin Knot Company, Stringback customers will have some of the best halter cord at their fingertips.
Intended for equestrian purposes, the cord is 100% static and will not stretch or thin over time, or under extreme pressure. This key attribute allows for comfortable ergonomic support and gaurenteed product longevity. The quality of this product is thanks to Columbia Basin Knot Company. Operating from Valleyford, Washington they expertly manufacture equestrian products onsite for trainers and retailers.
Chose a wood tone that matches your decor. Supplied from Rosenzweig Lumber, Stringback customers will have some of the best hard woods at their disposal.
No man-made material can match the touch, visual richness and durability of solid hard wood furniture. Truth to materials is a tenet of fine handcrafted furniture, which holds that all furniture should "explore the intrinsic capacities of the materials from which they are made." This ode to craftsmenship shames faux laminates, veneered substrates and cheapened wood products. My process begins and ends in the Bronx, with hand selected boards from Rosenzweig Lumber.
What is truly remarkable in design is the process. When documented, it serves to record creative thinking and to document inspiration. Your support with Stringback is an investment in creative thinking, thoughtful design and worthwhile craftsmanship. Support the kind of products and quality you wish to see in the market, Heartfelt products have a story of product and process, I hope you enjoy mine!
The world is filled with interesting and thought provoking ideas and ideals, but what of that constant stimulus is strong enough to inspire and drive a product design?
In the case of Stringback, the material inspiration derives from the history of manufacturing, in my hometown, of Wakefield Massachusetts. In the tradition of Haywood-Wakefield canning and wicker furniture I found inspiration, and an opportunity for design innovation and growth.
To best compliment the clean aesthetic of the canning I pulled inspiration from a complex wooden bust, for which I had named "Hilda." As a child "Hilda" was my prized procession, as I had unearthed her from the yard of my childhood home. Her name comes from the hill our home was perched on. She possessed many of the qualities I was looking for in Stringback. Mainly a naturalistic aesthetic achieved through curvilinear woodworking.
The ideal of Stringback was to create a safety enclosure space through the subtle implementation of traditional wingback form language. This inspiration came from the wingback chairs in my grandparent’s living room and the positive feelings of safety fostered from those memories. To increase the height and width as elegant solutions opposed to a literal enclosure.
To design Stringback I produced several explorative drawings and many scale Maquette's. In the craftsmen style, my rewards will reflect my design process.
$25 - Explorative Process Posters
Chose from one of seven drawings printed in a high quality matte finish. The color is used to highlight and indicate pursued ideas. Beginning with one, this series of seven drawings helped lead to the creation of Stringback.
$25 - Sixth Scale Maquette Kit
Build your own Stringback Model! In my design process I utilize laser cutting machinery to build precise scale models. With that same technology you are able to build your own Stringback model at a sixth scale. Scale wooden parts come easily together with a dot of glue, and provided string wraps easily to make for a unique home kit. Ignite your inner craftsmen!
$50 - Fourth Scale Maquette Kit
Build your own Stringback Model! In my design process I utilize laser cutting machinery to build precise scale models. With that same technology you are able to build your own Stringback model at a larger fourth scale. Scale wooden parts come easily together with a dot of glue, and provided string weaves easily with felt to make for a unique home kit. Ignite your inner craftsmen!
$5,000 - Full Scale Stringback Chair
Designed for relaxation and handcrafted with exception care, Stringback enhances the relaxing experience. This is your opportunity to own one of the ten additional chairs to be built in this campaign.
Risks and challenges
The Stringback campaign is the result of two semesters in the Industrial Design department of Pratt Institute. In the Spring, Stringback was designed and fully prototyped under the guidance of tenured professor and skilled artisan Kimberly Snyder. In "The Art of Crowdfunding" taught by Industrial Designer and successful Kickstarter veteran Peter Ragonetti, I received effective guidance and confident support that I will be able to deliver.
As with any product, there can be delays come production. As the designer and head craftsmen I can assure a quality of product, but with a higher demand will come its own challenges. Communication with suppliers and shippers have ensured that the delivery timeline for Stringback is feasible. WIth your support, Stringback can be yours!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
