The goal is to assemble a 22 page first issue of the original property The Urn, a comic book about the emotional cost of revenge.
We've put together a strong 7 pages and would like your help to finish the remaining 15 pages. Once complete, we'll take that first issue and use it to pitch to publishers that deal in creator-owned material. If we can't find a publisher we like, we'll push forward and do it ourselves.
The Urn is the product of a team working together to create something that is more than the sum of its parts. By contributing to our Kickstarter initiative you help keep the team together and focused on bringing this first issue to life. Your money goes towards page rates for the penciler, inker, colorist, and letterer who shape ideas into spectacular images.
While crime comics aren't unheard of in the market, they often play second fiddle to more popular genres like superhero books. As someone who believes in the power of the format, I like to see comics that tell stories of every kind. The Urn is an effort to tell a human story in simple terms without tethering it to conventions. With your help, we can achieve that goal and bring something really fresh into existence.
The Story 1971. Recently released from prison, outlaw biker Lyle “Sun” Sexton goes looking for the one thing that has ever made him feel stable: his ex-wife. Instead he finds her grieving sister. Talia, she tells him, was killed by the man she started dating while Sun was locked up. A small-time drug dealer from Santa Barbara, Paulie Selleti, wormed his way into her life when she was most vulnerable. She says Talia got strung out and started making excuses for Paulie’s abusive behavior. There’s not enough evidence for the police, but her sister knows it was Paulie that killed Talia.
Sun takes his ex’s ashes and sets out from Jersey City to Santa Barbara on a quest that will take him 3,000miles across the country and through a million issues left unresolved. He has a lot to say to Talia, whether she can hear him or not.
The world has changed since Sun was last on the outside. His gang has split into two factions that, while not openly at war, both work to undermine the other. Both sides expect Sun’s loyalty. As he crosses the country, Sun is pressured to honor old allegiances even as once trusted allies blur into conspiring enemies.
Any headaches Sun has from his old friends pale in comparison to the trouble he has coming in rival gang turf. Before being sent away, Sun had left a wake of maimed bikers from Pennsylvania to Reno. A decade spent as a gang enforcer and general troublemaker catches up with you eventually. Sun is due to learn that just because you’ve forgotten someone doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten you. He may be a man on a mission, just passing through and looking for no trouble, but to those he’s injured- he’ll always be a target.
Sun knows how the story will end: he’s going back to prison or straight to the morgue. The moment Paulie put his hands to Talia, wheels were set in motion that can’t be stopped. For all the personal growth Sun undergoes on his trip and for all the demons he sheds, there is one dark certainty: Paulie is going to die.
