Ahhh... the freewheeling, liberated 1920's... women finally get the vote, but apparently publishing anecdotes about childhood abuse, your brothers' sexual exploits with the family livestock, and sincere wishes that death and destruction might be visited upon all the members of your backwater Texas family would still get a girl institutionalized and kicked out of Great Britain.
Edna Gertrude Beasley is the most incendiary feminist author you've never heard of. Her autobiography, "My First Thirty Years," was banned upon its publication in 1925 for "gross obscenity," and most copies were destroyed in U.S. and British customs offices. Some eventually made it into circulation, though the governor of Texas later sent the Texas Rangers to seek out and seize any copies that had managed to infiltrate his great state.
Upon discovering this powerfully independent iconoclast and her amazing story, I set about adapting portions of her all-but-vanished book into a one-woman theatrical production which I have performed to great success in New York and New Orleans. I now have the opportunity to, in my own small way, help re-introduce Gertrude and her story to a larger audience. Throughout the summer of 2011 I will be taking the show on a tour of 6 Canadian Fringe theatre festivals, including a stop in Edmonton, the largest such festival in the Americas.
Planned tour dates and cities:
June 1-19..........Montreal, Quebec
July 6-15........... Toronto, Ontario
July 16-24......... Hamilton, Ontario
July 28-Aug 9...Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Aug 12-22......... Edmonton, Alberta
Sept 1-11.......... Halifax, Nova Scotia
(See Texpatriate Productions listed at: http://canadianfringefestivals.wordpress.com/touring-lottery/
Chosen as one of 5 international touring productions for the 2011 Fringe Festival season!)
*Special note for all backers who fund at the $50 level and above- I am currently negotiating bookings in the New Orleans area after the first of the year, and any performance dates there (or elsewhere...) will be posted in the updates as soon as they are confirmed!
---LOUISIANA SHOW DATES!
LAFAYETTE: March 11, 12, & 13 at the Cite des Arts theater on Vine St.!!
NEW ORLEANS: March 17, 19, & 20, March 24. 26 & 27 at the Shadowbox Theater on St Claude!! (That's Thurs, Sat & Sun- no Friday perf''s at Shadowbox-)
*Special note for all backers funding at the $70 level and above: You will also be receiving the prizewinning chili recipes from the First Quadrennial Super-Awesome Chili Cookoff! How great is that?
And, to further sweeten the deal, the entire tour will be traveled by rail! In addition to its being the most cost-effective and low-stress method of travel, it also has the added nostalgia of being a mode of travel Gertrude Beasley herself employed on her world travels. And short of travelling on a solar-powered gyrocopter, (which I'm sure another fabulously enterprising Kickstarter is presently working on...) it is really the greenest way to go. The Canadian transcontinental rail system cuts through unspoiled wilderness from the Maritimes in the east through the Great Lakes region and across the great plains of central Canada, taking this tour on an as-the-crow-flies distance of over 2300 miles. (whew!)
So that's where you come in... Kickstarter funds will be used to cover entry fees for the festivals and rail travel for two (myself and one stage manager/ technician) from New Orleans, across Canada, and back home again.
In addition to the fabulous rewards listed to the right, backers-only project updates will include coverage of the tour and travel plans, (feel free to contribute sightseeing suggestions!) news from the road, links to reviews, and exclusive video performances, including additional never-before-seen readings from Beasley's autobiography, available to all backers of this project, starting at a mere $10!
