For years – at least since Fusion launched in 2005 – people have wondered what fully new system P&G's Gillette would come up with next. Some speculation has focused on a razor with heated blades. Well, now that system is here, but it's not from Gillette. SmartRazor is hitting the market, kind of, with a Kickstarter campaign that launched yesterday. The backers are not just scruffy bootstrappers who know nothing about bending metal. They also sell ShaveMate razors with shaving cream dispensed from the handle and backed via direct-response ads featuring prolific pitchman Anthony Sullivan. SmartRazor CEO Lou Tomassetti said he's gotten keen interest in the heavily patented SmartRazor since a 2015 teaser showing at CES, and most recently from big retailers. The men’s razor industry is as cutthroat as any, and led by Gillette, Schick, Dorco, and Dollar Shave Club, the latter recently acquired for $1 billion by Unilever, business is booming. Now, two brothers, Lou and Pete Tomassetti have set out to disrupt this category with SmartRazor, the only company making heated blade razors. The pair had already had success, selling their ‘Freedom’ all-in-one razor to the US Military during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, followed by the launch of consumer ShaveMate models men and women. Lou Tomassetti says: “We bootstrapped SmartRazor ourselves and over the last 12 years of development have put in around $2 million in R&D, engineering, design, patents and IP work. This is the first time hi-tech merges with razors.” Their biggest challenges have been speed to market, working with a large electrical engineering firms and parts suppliers, and funding. The SmartRazor shown in the video is one of our working prototypes. We have put together a great team for production with lead Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and Designers that are top in their fields. We also partnered with the largest Electronics and Components supplier and we are very happy to have them. They have been instrumental in setting up our manufacturing in one of their best factory partners in the USA. Also on the team is Panasonic - we are thrilled that they will be SmartRazor's power source and they have helped us greatly through these pre-production phases.
Once funded, our manufacturing team are saying approximately 9 months to be mass producing SmartRazors. As with all product manufacturing projects, unforeseen delays and issues with the process of production may happen. However we have manufactured other products and inventions for many years so we have experience in production and working with engineers, designers, suppliers and factories. We are confident that we will meet the challenges to come and we know we will deliver the highest quality product by or in the last quarter of 2017. Learn about accountability on KickstarterA: No absolutely not. SmartRazor does not use lasers and we have no affiliation with Skarp whatsoever. We’ve been in the razor business for 2 decades and we have SmartRazor working prototype models that have been shave tested extensively.
A: Yes, SmartRazor cartridges with 6 heated-blades are replaceable. MSRP is planned at $6.50 each compared to the leading brand's non-heated cartridges at $5.00 each. However as you can imagine there is new technology built into the SmartRazor cartridges for the heat, and they will last up to 3X's longer so there is actually a cost savings. A package of 4 heated blades cartridges will be available for $26.
A: Yes, SmartRazor has a trimmer blade that is located at the top of the cartridge. It’s perfect for trimming out the side burns, and the hard to reach spots like under the nose.
A: The SmartRazor will last on average 12 hot shaves before needing a recharge. However, placing it in the convenient recharging dock after each use will always keep it at full charge and ready to shave.
A: It takes approx. 3 times less force for SmartRazor heated blades to cut through hair. Less force to cut means less ware on the blades. This equates to the SmartRazor heated blades lasting up to 3 times longer than other brands' non-heated blades.
