About this project
Have you ever wanted to recreate one of the swordfights from your favorite movie? Or wished you could be right in the middle of the action when your favorite character is battling his way through that dungeon? Well now you can! Play Legend's Gauntlet, the book-based sword fighting game from Firelight Game Company.
Firelight Game Company is working with award winning game designer, Alfred Leonardi, and the very talented artist, Doug Shuler, to produce Legend's Gauntlet, a brand new series of combat game books using the Lost Worlds game system.
What is Legend's Gauntlet?
Legend's Gauntlet is a dueling game featuring legendary figures. Our first series takes place in Sherwood Forest and Nottingham with everyone's favorite bad boy, Robin Hood, and the greedy villian, the Sheriff of Nottingham. We have 4 characters in this setting: Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Guy of Gisborne, and the Sheriff of Nottingham.
What is the Lost Worlds game system?
Lost Worlds is a diceless fantasy combat system where each player chooses a character to compete with one another in a fast action duel using illustrated books. Over 75 characters have been produced by six different publishers internationally since its debut in 1983 including Battlebooks for Marvel Comics. It is truly a unique system that is absolutely a blast to play with kids and adults alike. You can play this game anywhere with just the two books - no dice (or batteries) required.
Differences between Legend's Gauntlet and the Original Lost Worlds
The Legend's Gauntlet 30th Anniversary edition books are in full color and we've developed a new layout of the game itself which simplifies gameplay from its original layout. Best of all, this edition will be compatible with all earlier character books using the Lost Worlds game system since its inception in 1983.
Artist, Doug Shuler illustrated some of the most beautiful characters produced for the Lost Worlds series almost 20 years ago. He has done amazing work for Magic: The Gathering, Star Wars: The Role Playing Game, Star Wars Adventure Journal, and more. His stunning renditions of super heroes and comic book characters have made him a sought after artist extraordinaire. Doug's Legend's Gauntlet illustrations are truly what makes this edition special. His finely detailed work decorates nearly every page of these illustrated character books.
Use of Funds
Our kickstarter campaign is for the production of Legend's Gauntlet 30th Anniversary edition with hard bound and soft cover options.
Soft Cover Option: Legend's Gauntlet single character game books. Each soft cover book is 64 page full color that includes one character based on the Robin Hood theme.
Hard Cover Option: Legend's Gauntlet: Sherwood Forest & Legend's Gauntlet: Nottingham game books. Each hard cover book is 144 page full color that will include 2 new characters based on the Robin Hood theme, and excerpts from Robin Hood tales dating back to the 15th Century. Over 120 full page illustrations will also make this a fantasy art collector’s must have!

We worked hard to bring cost of printing, shipping and distribution to a manageable level and we hope you agree this is a project worth backing, buying and treasuring for many years to come. The production costs for 4 full color soft cover books and 2 full color hard bound books come to $38,000. We will publish 500 each of the 2 hard cover limited editions printed if this Kickstarter campaign is successful. If we don't meet our goal, it is likely these beautiful hard cover editions will never be produced. We leave it up to you, the fans and collectors to show your approval and support by helping us achieve our goal.
We hope Lost Worlds fans and game lovers will enjoy these 30th Anniversary limited edition books to add to their collection. Read it. Gawk at it. Play it.
Legend’s Gauntlet will be compatible with all previous Lost Worlds books including Tunnels and Trolls, Runesword and Queens Blade (Japan).

Production should go smooth as Todd Broadbent, the other managing partner of Firelight Game Company, has over 15 years of graphic design/publishing experience including work as a pre-press technician for an offset printer, giving him insight into the production process. He has also managed his own design firm for 10 years before partnering to form Firelight Game Company.
We hope to start production as soon as we meet our goal and have a finished product in hand by February/March 2013. Most rewards should be available for an early Christmas if the campaign is successful. With your help we hope this will be just the start of many products that entertain, educate and bemuse. We have a great experienced team. All we need now is you.

Jill Leonardi and Todd Broadbent
Firelight Game Company
Jill Leonardi carries the torch of the Leonardi Legacy by releasing Legend’s Gauntlet, using this award winning Lost Worlds game system designed by her father that has actively been played & sold since it’s inception in 1983. This revolutionary system doesn't need batteries or dice. Two character books and two character cards are all you need to challenge your opponent to a mythic, historic, cosmic or legendary duel.
Game designer, Alfred Leonardi, has agreed to license his Lost Worlds game system for this four character 30th Anniversary edition in full color. The Lost Worlds game system used in Legend's Gauntlet was first published in 1983 by Nova. It was awarded the Charles Thomas/Origins Award for Best Fantasy Boardgame of 1983. Over six publishers internationally have released over 75 compatible characters over the past 30 years. Characters include knights, pirates, zombies, gunslingers, giants, dinosaurs, robots, wraiths, Medusa, Unicorn, Genies, Gargoyles, barbarians, ninja, samarai, and many more.
Some words and phrases used to describe game systems designed by Alfred Leonardi include, "magic", “Fun and fast”,“Excellent”,“Great concept”,“Easy to play”,“Genius”,“One of my all time favorite games”, “I play it with my daughter/son”,“I’ve never experienced anything like it” and our favorite, "Alfred is like Gandalf".
Risks and challenges
As a new company with lots of dreams and a smaller amount of money, we
found ourselves with many issues to tackle in order to build a good foundation in which to make quality products.
Our first risk with this project is dealing with the printing of the books. Printing errors happen. In fact, my father, Alfred Leonardi, had to deal with that fact on his very first run of the original Lost Worlds game books. Todd has over a decade of experience in graphic design and printing, including previous employment as a pre-press technician. We've been working with a printer that specializes in full color art and graphic novel style books. We've received sample books to check quality and a dummy book with our page, paper stock and size specifications. We will also receive two more sets of proofs before production begins to minimize or eliminate any errors that may occur.
One of our challenges is dealing with the space needed to house our product. In order to deal with this issue we decided to use Amazon fulfillment services. Once the rewards have been sent out to our donors, our product will be warehoused and subsequent orders shipped by amazon.com.
Human errors are a part of life but we feel we've taken the steps to eliminate those errors on our project and give it the best chance of success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are not offering that at this time but it is under consideration in the future.
Yes! We've made that available in one of our updates. Check our reward offers for options.
Both will be full color and include the new layout for easier game play. The 30th Anniversary hard cover books are limited editions and will contain 2 characters per book and contain a selection of Robin Hood ballads and stories dating back to the 15th century. Soft cover editions will contain single characters.
