GODHOOD details the actions of Riff, a young writer, whose original character, Avadra, suddenly manifests herself in real life through circumstances unknown! Knowing what his character is capable of and fearing the worst, Riff sets out to masquerade as one of her followers in an attempt to prevent the very events he wrote about from taking place.

GODHOOD is a short rhythm, hack’n’slash game where the player is rewarded for performing combos to the rhythm of the music:

The game doesn't force you into a single rhythm. Play along with whatever beat you feel more comfortable with, be it the drums or the synth!

On major downbeats, unleash your power and blow away all that stand in your path:

Major Characters

A small town writer, Riff is a loner whose own story has suddenly manifested itself into reality as if he himself had prophesied it. Knowing the fate his creation has possibly set upon the world, Riff swallows his fears of public confrontation and suits up in an attempt to console his own protagonist…

 Hailing from a world of powerful creatures, Avadra is an explosive self-proclaimed deity who has escaped her orderly, law-bound home. Free from the strict overwatch of her kind, Avadra aspires to lead this new found world of hers and bring about change beyond imagination! Things go awry though when she discovers that, rather than accept her with open arms, people instead opt to run for their lives.

Minor Characters

Mike is Riff’s closest, albeit, nervous friend. Acting as Riff’s artist, he is the only other person with any knowledge of Riff’s story.

GODHOOD is almost entirely programmed from scratch, game engine and graphics engine, in C++ using GLFW 3.0! With development starting all the way back in July, 2013, all systems required for the game have been fully implemented, meaning all that's left is the creation and implementation of assets, be it characters, stages, cutscenes or explosions!

Throughout the development of GODHOOD, spanning all the way back to the very start of the game engine's conception, development logs have been maintained featuring commentary and explanations on almost all of the assets! You can check out the playlist here (though you might want to skip to part 6 for the better mic).

GODHOOD will feature:

  • 7 chapters, each featuring unique gameplay and soundtrack, along with a rich story!
  • Multiple difficulties that do more than just change enemy health and damage
  • Practice Mode! Become familiar with a song's rhythms before playing along with it

After working on GODHOOD for two and a half years, I’ve decided to seek funds to cover the rest of the game’s development. The funds from the base kickstarter goal will be distributed like so:

  • 55% will go to game development, which covers programming, art and writing
  • 18% will go to contracting sound design
  • 17% will go to fulfilling donation incentives
  • 10% goes to Kickstarter!

Mac and Linux Ports

GODHOOD is currently launching exclusively on Windows but because it was programmed in C++ using OpenGL, porting it to other systems is very possible!  

Divine Mode

After your first playthrough, you’ll unlock Divine Mode which allows you to play through the game with a completely different set of powers and abilities, totally changing the way you play!

Full Voice Acting + Art Overhaul

During the game’s development, I discovered that my original plan for the cutscene artwork required far too much work for me alone. With that in mind, I’ve decided that instead, the cutscenes will be in a more traditional format; dialogue boxes with static character images:

The reduced amount of assets required will allow me to concentrate on making higher quality artwork. In addition to that, if the full voice acting tier is reached, then all dialogue across the entire game will be fully voice acted!

If the art overhaul incentive is reached, then I will be able to hire an artist and restore the cutscenes to their original design of pseudo-animation!

$1 - 10-Second Drawings

In addition to a thanks, I will draw a quick doodle at a rate of $1 per 10 seconds of drawing, up to $15 for 150 seconds! If you want, you can even supply me with a quick description of what you'd like to see! I can't say it'll be a masterpiece, but it's the least I can do.

$15 - A Digital Download of GODHOOD

You will receive a digital copy of the game as soon as it's released!

$25 - The Digital Soundtrack

Along with GODHOOD, you will also receive the full digital soundtrack!

$40 - Stickers

The sticker set will contain the GODHOOD logo as well as multiple designs and characters from the game itself

$70/$100 - Posters

Choose from a whole set of posters, some drawn by guest artists. More posters to come after the campaign is finished!

$400 - 6 Frame Icons

I will do up a square animated icon of your character, featuring animated effects seen in GODHOOD! A 4 frame example can be seen here.

$750/$1250 - Way Plush

The simplest form of a Will, which are literally the physical manifestation of the will of their creators, the Ways are simple creatures summoned to carry out simple tasks. Donating at the $750 and $1250 tiers will get you a Way of your own to help you out (or, a plush version of one at least)!

$3000 - Playable Character

Ever wanted to actually see your character in the context of a game? Donate to this tier and in a completely separate minigame, I will implement your concepts as a playable character and pit them against the wills! They will have animations for idle, run, jump, ground and air combos as well as a special attack! Rhythm mechanics can easily be included or excluded to your liking!

After over two and a half years of development, developing this game has been a wonderful experience and I could have never imagined making it this far! I’ve learned an absolute ton about game development from more perspectives than I originally thought possible!

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk that needs to be addressed with GODHOOD is that, as a solo developer working on his first title of especially large scale, there is a chance that the budget is miscalculated, or that there are factors that I might not have considered that will effect the actual budget of the game when it's completed. The chances of this are low, however, as this current budget was adjusted with respect to that inexperience!

Beyond that, there are always risks regarding getting the game through the Steam Greenlight process and as well as potential for unforeseen equipment replacement costs!

In terms of the actual development itself, all of GODHOOD's underlying systems are already in place. All that remains is the creation and implementation of all of the art and gameplay assets, as well as balancing and bug fixing!
