ESCAPE FROM THE LAND OF THE SNOWS on KICKSTARTER
WHAT IS ESCAPE FROM THE LAND OF THE SNOWS?
After many years developing and producing films for big studios, and finally coming to terms with the fact that the only movies the studios really want to make are superheroes and remakes, I have decided to develop my own projects independently. As my company’s first film developed independently we have chosen the incredible true story of the Dalai Lama’s harrowing escape from Tibet and over the Himalayas into India, based upon the book ESCAPE FROM THE LANDS OF THE SNOWS by Stephan Talty.
For those of you who haven’t read the Stephan Talty incredible book, it is the true account of the young Dalai Lama’s audacious escape from his palace in Lhasa while the Chinese army rolled over Tibet, its advance hunter patrols in fierce pursuit of the man they most coveted. The 14th’s (Dali Lama) escape was an act of daring and defiance that represented Tibet’s last hope, and so the world watched, transfixed, as the gentle monk’s journey unfolded.
Emotionally powerful and irresistibly page-turning, Escape from the Land of Snows is simultaneously a portrait of the inhabitants of a spiritual nation forced to take up arms in defense of their ideals, and the saga of an initially childlike ruler who at first wore his monk’s robes uncomfortably but was ultimately transformed by his escape into the towering figure the world knows today—a charismatic champion of free thinking and universal compassion.
Thanks to all the loyal and enthusiastic fans of ESCAPE FROM THE LANDS OF THE SNOWS we have begun to develop our film project by optioning the rights to this book and gaining the support of the Tibet House in New York City.
AN EPIC STORY MADE INDEPENDENTLY
Because the Dali Lama is a living history, and many of those who made the journey with him over the mountains are still alive today, we want to do this project as soon as possible - time is of the essence so that we can include the actual people involved at the conclusion of our narrative film (similar to what Spielberg did at the end of Schindler’s List) and make the film as accurate and authentic as possible.
Though the story is one of epic scale and scope, we are developing and producing the movie completely independently. We know that a movie like this will be almost impossible to get made within the studio system. But we feel strongly that this is an important story that needs be told.
SO HERE IS WHERE THE KICKSTARTER COMMUNITY COMES TO THE RESCUE
We have the rights to the book Escape From the Land of the Snows, we need the Kickstarter community’s support to help us to do the following things to develop the book into a movie:
1. Extend our option on the book
2. Hire a screenwriter to adapt the book into a powerful screenplay
3. Have the movie budgeted and scheduled
4. Location scouted—this requires the scout to visit the locations that both work best for the movie, and will offer us the best incentives to shoot there.
A major studio spends many hundreds of thousands of dollars doing this. A screenwriter alone can cost up to a million dollars at a studio. But we are getting everyone involved to buy into our vision and do this really cost effectively. We want people who are passionate and who want to be a part of this.
To date no one has told this story of the Dali Lama’s escape from Tibet as a major movie.
However we are going to do all of the above for a grand total of $30,000.
Of course we still have to produce the movie-and we are estimating this will cost up to $15 million. But we know how to get this done—independently (with the studio acting purely as a distributor)--IF we have a great script and an amazing cast.
HELP US GET TO $50,000!
If we can reach a goal of $50,000 we can hire a casting director to help us find the perfect cast (p.s. we’ll be asking our community their opinion on who our cast should be.)
BUILDING AN ACTIVE COMMUNITY
We aren’t only looking for financial support from the Kickstarter community—we want to build an ESCAPE FROM LAND OF THE SNOWS MOVIE community and include our supporters in the entire process of making the movie. We are going to give our community access to a private website in which you can help make decisions about the film (ie. Who we should cast, what locations we should shoot in, etc.) We’ll also provide live footage of the making of the movie, and ask our community to help us make decisions in real time. Completely revolutionary access and interaction to the making of a film. Just for our community.
JOIN OUR TEAM!
We hope there are people out there who will join us in making this film a reality. We have an ever expanding list of rewards that we are offering in gratitude of your contribution. We thank you in advance.
We would like to thanks our editor Charles Hess for the great work putting together our trailer.
