An iPhone 5/5S case that lets you change colors in realtime to whatever you want, whenever you want.

At CODE Fluidics we are passionate about bringing innovative technologies from biotech and elsewhere directly to consumers. Our first project takes color customization in products to a whole new level. We have developed a technology that allows anyone to change the color of their products in real time and as often as they want. Our patented technology uses microfluidics embedded into a product to control the color. There are virtually no limits to the combinations of colors one chooses, or how often one changes the color of a CODE-enabled product, such as the CODE Case.

We have designed and prototyped the world's first microfluidically controllable iPhone case. And it's all completely designed and made right here in California! We are now on KickStarter with this project to raise enough money to build the necessary tooling, scale-up manufacturing, and buy materials for making these revolutionary cases. We have our manufacturing partners already picked out, but now we need enough money to begin making the cases in large scale.

During the past year our team spent countless hours making sure that every detail of the product design was just right. We started out by 3D printing the cases and manually finishing them. The channels, we made by laser engraving materials such as acrylic, PET, and PETE, then manually applying an adhesive layer and the connector.

We went through over 100 prototypes before we were sure that all the bases were covered (the picture below shows just a few of our prototypes). Our engineers and scientists spent many days and nights perfecting the various features of the technology including useability, cost, thickness, look, robustness, size, and numerous other tiny details.

All the hours of hard work paid off when we were able to reliably and reproducibly build prototypes of our iPhone case, connector, and cartridge. The next step was to develop a scalable manufacturing process, which was actually a much tougher challenge than making the functioning prototypes. We started by working with a local design firm in Encinitas, CA that specializes in microfluidic designs for medical products. Currently the only companies working on design and manufacturing of microfluidics are either medical devices or biotech, so it was hard to find partners with enough specialized skills to help us scale up in a way that met the unique challenges of a consumer product company. As a result we had to innovate most of the production methods ourselves.

Once we solved the difficult problem of manufacturing channels in large scale, we found a manufacturer in Los Angeles, CA that agreed to make the parts for us. They have the capability to take our process for making the channels and do it on a reel-to-reel manufacturing line, which can support very large numbers. Again, this company specializes in manufacturing microfluidic systems for medical device makers. They have the capability of scaling up to parts volumes in excess of 300-400 thousand units, which should be more than enough for our campaign.

Injection molding the case and cartridges falls to our other manufacturing partner in Minnesota. They will provide us with the raw parts for the case and cartridge, and we will complete the assembly and packaging right here at MakerPlace in San Diego, CA.

If we exceed our wildest expectations in terms of order volume that could be both a great thing and a new problem all at once. We have seen many projects on KickStarter get caught off guard by huge and unexpected order amounts that lead to fulfillment delays, which can be a big let down for supporters. We wanted to make sure that we do not let our supporters down by having long delays in getting our product out if you fall in love with our project. So we decided to plan for this wonderful problem up front by working with a very large scale manufacturer in Australia. This manufacturer has many years of experience making millions of microfluidic products for medical device companies and they could handle making our channels even at the highest volumes imaginable for a KickStarter project.

Our ultimate goal is to provide consumers with many different products that they can color customize; everything from hats, to sunglasses, and watch bands. This project is just the first step towards that goal. Our hope is that the CODE Case will be a great success so we can move onto the next product category.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The key challenge for this project involves the making and sealing of the microfluidic channels in large scale. Fortunately, we have spent 2 years perfecting a method that we are confident is scalable to the volumes that we will need for this project on KickStarter.

Another risk that has plagued many projects on KickStarter is the schedule risk. Since we will be relying on 3rd party vendors for manufacturing the channels and microcartridges, there is always a risk of project delays. With that in mind, we examined our timelines and forecasts multiple times to make sure that we were conservative in our estimates.
