About this project
We have been working on translating and laying out this game for the past year, and we are finally ready to take it to print, but we need your help! This game was a huge success in Japan, and although it is out of print in Japanese now.. it's time to bring it to you in English!
Barbarossa is set in a fictional Second World War setting in which cute German military girls rush against Moscow to defeat the evil magician Stalin.
Barbarossa is a deck-building game for 2-5 players. Each player controls a fictitious German army division invading a fictitious Russia during a fictitious WWII. The goal of the game is to conquer cities until finally taking (fictitious) Moscow.
The game uses the in-game deck-building mechanism that is similar to other deck building games of this style, where each player starts with a small deck of resource cards. During the course of the game players buy cards from an open card pool to build their deck.
Each player begins with a small deck of cards, and during the game acquires new cards from the War Zone. The goal of the game is to conquer Moscow. When Moscow falls, the player with the most victory points wins. Victory points are acquired by conquering different cities and/or strategical positions during the game. When you attack a city, event cards are revealed to hamper your assault.
Barbarossa uses six different kinds of cards:
- Supply Cards: These provide points to buy other cards from the open card pool.
- Unit Cards: The use of these cards require "Operation Points" (Each turn you start with one Operation Point) and deliver the military strength to attack cities or strategic positions (or in other words gain victory point cards).
- Operation Cards: They give you a one time bonus in different forms. After use they are not just discarded but put out of play.
- Deploy Cards: They stay in the players play area and deliver bonuses in different forms every turn.
- Target Cards: The cities and strategic positions which deliver VPs, also if you conquered strategic positions it becomes easier to attack cities.
- Event Cards: If you attack the Target cards an event is drawn and stuff happens.
The illustrations are provided by famous Japanese fanzine artists, and we think you will agree, all of the art is amazing! There are 305 cards that come in the game, plus we have additional promos that we will be throwing in for our Kickstarter Backers!
- You get to keep one card at the end of each turn to bring with you to the next turn. In all other Deck Builders, you discard your entire hand.
- Cards stay on the table. Many cards go to your Front Line and stay there until an effect removes them. Most Deck Builders just have everything you played going into your discard.
- The Combat System is interesting and unique.
- There are many different card types that all operate differently. Some of which can't even ever go into your deck.

We've got a bunch of great stretch goals lined up for you! There are quite a few promo cards that we have put together, and while some of them are alternate art cards, most of these will be altogether new cards that are not included in the game itself.
Once we hit our goal we will uncover the artwork for stretch goals... and as long as we keep getting funding, we will keep making new promo cards for you guys!
Thanks for all of your support everyone!
We have decided to make a run of alternate art and new promo cards for future stretch goals... so starting at $60k and every $10k beyond, we will make a new promo card with commissioned art from the original Japanese Barbarossa artists! Some will be alternate versions of cards already in the set, but we have THREE cards that were not released in the original Japanese edition that we will also be getting new commissioned artwork for as well!
And... we have added another stretch goal at $90k! If we reach $90k in funding by the end of this campaign, we will commit to making the expansion to Barbarossa our very next project! This has been highly requested by our backers, and we want to make this happen! We actually had another project we were thinking of doing, but we will hold off and get things going rolling with the expansion to Barbarossa, El Alamein!
Because of demand, we have decided to make an alternate playmat for sale, a standard sized vertical playmat that has the image shown on the large cloth playmat that is available in the Destroyer Pledge level. This will not be a cloth playmat and it will be the same size as the first playmat that is being offered. To get this playmat as well, just add $20 to ANY pledge level to have this item added to your shipment.
We have been asked to include a 6 pack of Player's Choice sleeves for those of you that want the high quality protection for your game right away, so here it is! Add on $25 to your pledge and we will include 6 packs of sleeves with your shipment, enough to sleeve all of your cards and have a few left over! You will be given the option at the end of the campaign to choose 6 black or 6 clear packs of sleeves.
There have been many requests to add on a second copy of the game... so here's the new add-in item! You can add on another $40 to get a second game plus two copies of all stretch goals! This is only for backers that have pledged at the $50 or higher level.
Please add $10 for international backers. In other words, a total of $50 add on for international shipments.
