About this project
Thanks for your support!
Your $25 pledge will pre-order you one pair of PlusMinus shoes! Remember, you won't be charged anything if we don't reach our goal by June 5. If we make it we both win!
Why EarthBaked Footwear?
I've been riding my bike to work for years and hate cramming all my "stuff " into a backpack. My footwear was always the bulkiest object. So I set out to create a lightweight, easy-to-pack shoe that gives back to the environment at the end of it's life.
Your pledge will be used to fund production of the first 5000/pr and have them shipped into your hands by the end of August. Thanks for your support!!!
DID YOU KNOW...
I'm well aware that this project doesn't and can't address the many complex socio-environmental issues of our day. But it's a step in the right direction. Making the PlusMinus shoe was intended to be simple. With an industrial sewing machine, scissors, a pattern, and some material a family in a developing country could pull themselves out of poverty by making and selling shoes to others in their community.
The shoe can be built without a last. No molded parts or adhesives are required for assembly. Let me know if you're a DIY'er and I'll send you my patterns. Or, pledge $25 dollars and you'll get a pair when we're funded!

Sizes? This is what's available. You will be able to select the size and color of your choice once we reach our funding goal. Remember, If we don't reach the goal, you won't be charged a thing. (NOTE: the chart below is not a conversion chart. Just available sizes.)
About the Shoe
The PlusMinus shoe is the embodiment of what I call a "return to sender" design philosophy. Over the years I've contributed my fare share of stuff to the landfill. I've realized that this is my opportunity to create with a closed loop product life cycle. Sure, the process isn't perfect yet. But instead of waiting for the opportunity to come to me, I decided to go after it myself.
The shoe is intended to be easily packed around. While my cycling shoes are on I keep the PlusMinus shoes packed flat in my back pack.
They roll up pretty tight too! I've taken them backpacking and they're great to slip on when lounging around camp.
Wool is amazing!
- Biodegradable: Naturally fertilizes soil by releasing nitrogen and sulfur as it degrades
- Moisture wicking
- Water Repellant
So bury the shoes in the dirt when they're worn out!
Earth Baked is much more than a shoe. It's a lifestyle, an option for responsible consumption, a passion for good design, and a love for natural materials on loan from their creator. I need your support to make this project a reality. Your donation will be used to place a minimum quantity order with our manufacturing partner. It will also be used to tackle shipping logistics from the port in China to my garage in Spanish Fork, Utah. So pick out the reward that works best for you. Spread the word and feel good about being a responsible consumer.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge for the Earth Baked project is managing post production logistics between the factory in China and my garage in Utah. I have experience working with a great freight forwarding company out of New York that will facilitate overseas shipping. There is a possibility that our shipment could be held up for a short time while clearing customs. Aside from having all our paperwork in order much of this is out of our control.
The last challenge will be shipping a large quantity of shoes from me to you as fast as possible. I'm fully committed to overcome these challenges and will keep all my backers up to date when the fulfillment process begins.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The cost of shipping shoes to backers outside the US is based off of US Postal Service International Flat Rate Pricing. Depending on how many shoes you order I should be able to pack them pretty flat and will do my best to use the most efficient shipping method possible. In cases (like Canada) where the shipping could be less expensive I will reimburse you for your remaining pledge.
Depending on who you ask, we throw over 700 thousands tons of apparel and footwear into our landfills annually (Soles4Souls.org). Other sources estimate 300 million pairs are thrown away each year. Need we say more!
Not under normal use. Wool is a very durable material and the minimal three component construction increases the life of the shoe by eliminating unnecessary seams. Wool will not start degrading until its in an environment where fungal and mildew growths can develop and feed on the fibre. Here's a link if you'd like more details.
It really varies from person to person. If you wear them everywhere everyday they'll probably last 3 to 6 months. I wear them during the summer months at home and work, everyday. At this rate they last about two summer seasons, or a full year. If you use them as a house shoe (slipper) they could last several years. The beauty is they are biodegradable and affordable so you can feel good about giving back to the earth and purchasing a new pair when it's time.
Very little! There is a 6mm barrier between you and the dirt, cement, pavement, etc. This provides a unique barefoot walking experience that will strengthen your feet and allow them to move, flex, and articulate naturally. You can always insert your favorite insole to add a little extra support. Superfeet makes some nice merino wool insoles.
We can exchange your shoe for the right size after all backer rewards have been fulfilled, however we will not pay for shipping either direction. Shipping will be the responsibility of you the backer.
