About this project
Thank you!Thank you, all, for your incredible support! Together, we did it—we reached the goal! Now that the campaign has finished, please join me at www.genosek.com for updates. The first and second books in the Ava of the Gaia series are already available in eBook and paperback form and the third book is coming in early 2017!
This is the Kickstarter for the third and final book in the Ava of the Gaia series—entertaining, hopeful young adult fantasy books animated by explorations of environmentalism, climate change, animal welfare, and gender.
I studied environmental law and policy in college and law school and went on to work in public interest environmental law. I’ve experienced firsthand the power of drawing on hope rather than fear to engage people on environmental issues. I’ve also seen the power of fiction to inspire and inform. Reading books like The Giving Tree and Anne of Green Gables profoundly altered my view of and my relationship to the natural world. More and more research is emerging that fiction can inculcate empathy in its readers. Thus books present a potent opportunity to connect readers to the natural world and its inhabitants. Such opportunities are especially important in light of a new finding that teachers spend, on average, only an hour or two a year on climate change.
My books provide another avenue for readers to explore critical issues like climate change. But these books are not dry, moralizing texts. Oh no. I love a good, addictive novel as much as the next person, and I made sure not to sacrifice a compelling story when weaving in social justice themes. One fan wrote to me that, after she’d insisted her sister read Ava of the Gaia, her sister became so wrapped up in the book that she almost missed her plane and had to be paged by the flight crew. Another reader wrote in an Amazon review that she almost overshot her train stop while engrossed in the book. So check out the Ava of the Gaia series (unless, of course, you need to catch a bus, train, plane, or any other form of transit). I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support to get the third book into the hands of readers!
Here's a comic by reader and friend, Hallie Jay Pope, which sheds light on why readers might be missing their public transit while reading the Ava of the Gaia series:
What are readers saying about the first two books in the series?
Ava of the Gaia
“A fantastic, engaging read that you simply can't put down. Nosek combines a strong and intelligent female protagonist -- Ava, likeable, spirited, and wise beyond her years -- with a riveting environmental theme to create the book I've been waiting my whole life to read.” –Savannah CW, Amazon reviewer.
“Ava of the Gaia, is a spectacular, quick read, and will leave you yearning for more.” –Fiona, Amazon reviewer.
“Rare is a book that addresses serious issues facing the human race and remains 'page-turningly' entertaining! Ava of the Gaia is a necessary read for all ages and would make an excellent book club choice or case study in school. It activates the imagination and is pretty much impossible to put down.” –Georgia Lloyd-Smith, Amazon reviewer.
“The two wonderful Ava books are for all ages…Please tell me you are working on the third book; it's like waiting for the next installment of Harry Potter (the feminist, Earth-friendly version).” –NSM, Amazon reviewer
"Amazing sequel…I would recommend it for young and old alike!" –Julian, Amazon reviewer
“Nosek's story is creative and rooted in the real-life environmental challenges we face worldwide. Somehow, grappling with the challenges through a young-adult fantasy novel creates a feeling of hope in our reality...” –Amazon Customer, Amazon reviewer

A note about rewards
In an effort to be as environmentally conscious as possible in creating rewards, I've focused on services and experiences rather than physical goods. I've also provided as many paperless alternative reward options as possible!

What are the funds for?
Your support will pay for my time to finish writing the third book, as well as printing, shipping, cover art, formatting for print and digital versions, and teaching materials.
I’ve collaborated with a wonderful Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Mozambique as a secondary school teacher to develop critical reading questions on gender, environment, and animals based off of Ava of the Gaia. Your support will help me expand on that work and design an engaging, interactive, and freely available teaching and reading guide to accompany the books.
The Ava of the Gaia series so far
Ava Fae is delighted at the appearance of an alluring new boy at her high school, until she sees the dagger tattoo on the inside of his arm. She knows that tattoo, and it can mean only one thing—either she or the new boy will be dead by the end of the school year.
Harnessing the magic of the elements passed down to her through the centuries, Ava works frantically to discover the true intentions of the tattooed stranger. But she is not the only one with mysterious powers and she finds herself thwarted at every turn. Hunter and hunted engage in an intricate game of cat and mouse—unaware that a much larger war is brewing, a war that will be decided by the outcome of their struggle.
Risks and challenges
I’ve written and published two books in the Ava of the Gaia series before, so I’m confident I can finish and deliver a third book. I’m already more than halfway through the final installment. The biggest challenge will be the shipping stage, although I’m planning well ahead of time to meet that challenge. Thank you so much for supporting my quest to provide hopeful, engaging environmental novels and teaching materials to the public—I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
