February Update Part TWO!

Posted by Heart Machine (Creator)

Drifters! This will be a shorter post, with some important information about Surveys that requires your eyeballs for reading.

We have a (nearly) final cover, which is currently being used as banner art on the GOG pre-order page:

We'll be sending out the remaining surveys this month, so please be on the look out. This means you get to select your platform(s) and provide us relevant info on your tier and rewards.

Please read the instructions carefully, as there are a fair amount of questions due to the complexity of the KS survey system and the variety of rewards we offered during the campaign. There are some questions about add-ons: these concern only the money you pledged DURING the campaign. We cannot offer add-ons after the campaign, as we explained last year in an Update.

Platform selection

The Wii U port is, unfortunately, currently in limbo.
So what happened? We had information about our engine, two years back, when we announced support for the platform. This had assured us we could port to the Wii U with relatively little hassle by now. However, due to ongoing internal contractual issues beyond our control between the platform holder and engine developer, we just don't know when or if this situation will have a good resolution. We are looking into the options available and doing what we can to help push the issue, including posting about it here.

This means we will still offer the option of Wii U in the Surveys, with the stipulation that if you do choose it as your platform, and we end up unable to support it this year, we will offer you a key on another platform of your choice. We would rather keep this option open, knowing there's still a possibility for it to work, than cancel the port right now.

I realize this isn't ideal, and plenty of people are looking forward to the release on a Nintendo platform (as are we, being life-long fans). Please understand business can sometimes get in the way of production, and there's only so much we can do to help sway these types of events with larger entities. We'll keep everyone updated as soon as we know more.

Final Bits

Development continues to be very intense, so updates will remain a bit spartan. Looking forward to next month with details on release date! Until then, have a wonderful remaining February.

Hello! I wanted to know how the rewards would work if I had pledged on the actual heart machine page shortly after the project was over: my tier involved 2 Steam keys, sound track, and art book. Are there any surveys involved for that kind of pledge? Will I recieve it at the same time as the other drifters? Thank you, an answer would be much appreciated!!

As a Wii U owner, this is terribly disappointing. I pledged at the $100 tier level, since this was one of the few games that seemed to be developing for the Wii U on a serious level.

    3. Noah Heninger on

Unbelievable. I backed this game for one reason only: A Wii U release. People paid for this. I wouldn't be surprised if 10% of your pledges came from people who wanted it for their Wii U. I'm sure it was not an insignificant amount, although one can never know exactly. Nevertheless, you have a responsibility to deliver on your promise.

I have a job that allows me free time, so I usually take the Wii U and plug it to play, I would have preferred Wii U because I would think it's superior in some way to the Vita version, but if they were equal I'd prefer the Vita one since it's screen is flashier and I love the to play Indies there anyway...

Could you please tell me what kinda differences we could expect from the Vita compared to more powerful platforms? And how much later do you expect the release on Vita to be?

      Regards! And good luck!

    5. Ryan Oehler on

I'm glad to hear that you'll work on refunding for the Wii U if it does get cancelled - because not only would I prefer it, I'd have no other option since I only have Nintendo platforms and my PC is a laptop that's over 10 years old.

You'd probably have the same or similar issues as with the Wii U, but since it's coming to Vita I just want to ask - did you ever consider the 3DS (or New 3DS if the original couldn't handle it)?

    6. Senchaholic on

I pledged on the $40 level, which includes an additional copy. I don't want two copies for PS4. Can I get one copy for PC and one for PS4?

You got 100k ear-marked for the Wii U port, so get to it and port it after the release.
      Don't blame a third part.

    8. Missing avatar

      Victor Romo on

Well I have a Wii U but no other console/handheld or PC options so if the Wii U version is scrapped can I inquire about getting a refund?

Heart Machine - I thought it was kinda weird that in my survey for the question asking about what add-ons did i pledge more than XX for, it never mentioned the + $10 - Unlock the Alternate playable Drifter Add-on. Yet, on the campaign page it it shows that as one of the possible add-ons that you can get. In my survey I had to put it in the question: Any additional add-ons that you included the cost of in your pledge? I hope that was the right thing to do.

    10. M D Penman on

Hi! did all the surveys get sent out already? I don't appear to have been sent one yet.

    11. Eggyhead on

Declared Vita for mine! I have too many other games competing for my attention on PS4 and I'm willing to wait. Those colors will be quite vibrant on the little OLED. Looking forward to it, Heart Machine!

      Wes Metcalf on

Would have preferred a Vita version but chose PS4 as TBA could mean anything. If the date firms up, will there be an option to change?

    13. Matthew W on

I am excited for this on Vita, but I do worry it will take another year to get it out, if ever, on that platform.

If it ends up taking too long, or getting essentially canceled, are we able to get the PS4 version instead? I really want it for Vita, but I will settle for PS4 if it ends up not happening.

    14. Kyle LaBonte on

Is there a way to update our surveys to receive a non Wii U instead?

    15. Charles Figel on

Wife got the family a Wii U for Christmas and I was really looking forward to playing HLD on it since we have very few games/money to buy new ones. I really don't think HLD is going to run on my 5 year old integrated graphics laptop. This pretty much sucks.

Heart Machine, the WiiU issue should have been resolved before you made a firm commitment to potential backers. Particularly alarming is your suggestion below that you intentionally misrepresented this because you did not want to "wait for the bureaucratic side" and that you therefore materially misrepresented this to potential backers and then took their money solely to satisfy your need "to push to garner support" for your project. Even if you supply a refund in the event that the WiiU version is cancelled to those that request one, you have essentially manipulated backers to provide you with an interest-free loan. And although I am certainly in the minority, some of us don't use multiple platforms.

    18. zoned87 on

Then why is it that with every kickstarter it's ALWAYS the Wii U version that gets the axe despite the financial support? I think it is because devs put all of their resources on other platforms and neglect the system. They are okay taking money from Nintendo fans money but then when its time to release the game they release it on the other platforms and shrug their shoulders when it comes time for the Wii U version. Hyper light drifter isn't the first and probably won't be the last to pull this crap on the fanbase.

    19. Tiso Spencer

@Dyne1319 No you're wrong. Wii U backers are a large part of why a lot of KS in recent years got even funded or even 1/3 amount of money backed. So no, it's these projects that keep underestimating their ability to deliver on said platform.

    20. Dyne1319

@Zoned87 I feel like your overestimating the people that care about wii U and regardless of that its not necessarily the fault of the developer that it didn't work out. Sometimes the platform owners make requests for changes to a game before they will sell it on there platform and I feel that Nintendo is that platform as they have to maintain there brand.

PC master race of platforms and failing that PS4

    21. zoned87 on

Part of the reason they got so much money for this kickstarter was that they put the Wii U version up on a pedestal and Nintendo fans backed it to death to reach that $550,000 goal before it ended. You have got to be fing kidding me.

    22. Jesus Antonio Rivera Muñoz on

while the Wii U news is dissapointing im gonna wait it out, it was my platform of choice because i just like to support the platform...
i dont mind waiting.. and if it doesnt come to pass i'll be okay with a PS4 key...

i understand its not on you, i know Wii U support has been the talk of GameMaker Studio for a while now and sadly nothing as come out of it.. and that is not your fault...

just like we were sold on the idea that Wii U was an option so were you when you were told there should be Wii U support by now... we're on the same boat even if on different decks...

so for the survey i'll keep on Wii U for now.. i dont mind the wait.. if not then i got options.. no need to be bitter or vindictive.

good luck and keep up the good stuff :D

    23. Chris Scharling on

I'm very disappointed about the Wii U port being in limbo. As a Wii U owner, I was really looking forward to this game.

I hope you guys learn not to promise something that you're not 100% sure you can deliver on. I also hope this can be turned around, although by now I'm used to getting let down by developers and publishers on this platform.

      Kim Goossens on

      Hey there!

Would it perhaps be a good idea to have a conversation with the folks at Abstraction Games? I know for a fact they have tested and tried technology in place they call “GameBaker” that takes a GameMaker project file and converts it to their run-time to play it on a myriad of consoles and handhelds. They basically reverse-engineered GameMaker completely. That’s how they were able to create the adaptations of games like Hotline Miami 1 & 2 and Gunpoint in the past. This may even leverage more platform potential beyond Wii U, I mean, why not?

Here’s to hoping on a Wii U version! GL!

    25. Matthew Johnson on

I backed this for the Wii U version. I want the Wii U version. I rather not get any other version of the game if it's not the Wii U one.

    26. zebastiane on

Like others Wii U owners, I'm really disappointed.
The Wii U stretch goal was at +100k$ and it looks like to me you're just saying us : "we are waiting"

    27. jibaycay on

      Well, I'm a bit disapppointed.
I would have support the game anyway, but I was looking the Wii U support cause it's the only one to support gaming from bed and behind the tv.
Also, if I reminder correctly, 100K$ in the KS campain was dedicated to the Wii U port itself, because we all know it wouldn't be a simple "Export to Wii U" operation.

Anyway, I'll surely get the Vita version instead, except if you announce the inclusion of the game in the PlayStation+ program before.

    28. lizard81288 on

Maybe you could contact Nintendo about the game. They seem to be pushing indie games and even have conferences/shows with just indie games. Maybe they could help you. Speaking of Nintendo, will this game be on the NX too, since the rumor mill is turning, the NX could come out this year. Most launches of consoles are bare bones when it comes to games, so if you could get this out on the NX early enough, I think it could sell wel, since most of the NX line up will be ports & tech demo-like games, one would assume.

    29. Justinian on

The game engine is GameMaker: Studio, not Unity. Thus the difficulty.

    30. Tiso Spencer

This really infuriates me because years ago Kickstarter "hot thing" was for projects to be in support of the Wii U (and somewhat still is). A project mentions a Wii U port and things just surged for them. I backed for the Wii U and to be told it's not happening (because let's be realistic, it ain't) is a gut punch. Maybe if this was coming to XB1, but as of now I'll have to get it on Steam because I just detest my PS4 as the days pass.

      DULEPA Jonathan on

Why don't you ask for a little help on the nintendo forum reserved for independent developer? There is a lot of mutual aid among the community and it could be a good option to find a solution.

I paid only for Wii U version too. If you cancel this version, I would want to be entirely paid off, thank you.

    32. Mike Jerry on

I want PS4 version! but when I click survey its blank, and so I wait.

    33. Christophe Mangot on

Well, disappointing news... Backed the game for the Wii U eShop version :(

    34. Raül Meroño Pericas on

I was also willing for a Wii U version, but since I also have a Steam account, I'm happy to get that one instead, as long as I can play this game in the end. You are so very close to release, guys. Keep up the good work and let's hope the Wii U version turns out to be a reality.

    35. Gary Thomas Bear on

This is disappointing news. It's sad that despite being funded by fans we still may not get this game on our platform of choice. The reason people back projects is so that the creators can make their vision a reality without having to submit to big companies' demands, but apparently that still happens. I know there's still hope but I was really looking forward to playing this on Wii U.

    36. Mark John Vignone Jr. on

Ouch, really hope a solution can be found to get it to WiiU, because as much as I wouldn't want to get a refund, it's the only platform I'd prefer it on.

I'm still going to back the Wii U version. I backed this game specifically because of its appearance on the Wii U.

But yeah, I think its best to get help backporting it. Hyperlight on Wii U needs to become a reality!

I would also like a refund if no solution is found; Wii U is my only platform of choice.

    40. maneauleau on

I backed the Wii U version but if it's not possible I will then take the Steam version. I just hope Damon Baker ( will be able to solve this problem because I was really looking forward to play on the gamepad.

    41. Niki Coppola

This sad news. i also funded only for the Wii U version. I hope things can be fixed. if not i'll take a refund. Hopefully its only a slight delay.

    42. Pedro Dionisio on

If you can't port the Wii U version by youselves (whatever reasons), maybe @brokenrules can help. They offered help with Undertale.

    43. Colin Vesper on

I'm cool with spartan updates :p

    44. Heart Machine Creator on

@domenico + @aaron : We'll work on refunding for Wii U if it comes down to canceling and people don't have another platform they'd prefer it on

    45. Timothy Kolek on

Regarding the Wii U issues, you're using Unity correct?

    46. Aaron Ludwig on

I only backed because of the Wii U version. I understand it's out of your hands, but my money isn't. Refund please. :)

    47. RidoKilos on

      Keep up the great work.
I get more and more excited each time I get news.

@Antonio Unfortunately technology/games can't always wait for the bureaucratic side in order to move forward. Sometimes we need to push to garner support.
