This film is a 30 minute documentary that tells the story of four women who used drugs/alcohol while pregnant. The film covers the difficulties of seeking and finding help, the role of shame, and the struggle and beauty in recovery. I interview 4 women who used while pregnant and 6 professionals who are active in the fields of women/recovery and fetal alcohol syndrome. The piece covers pregnancy, addiction, recovery, relapse, motherhood and spirituality.
There is almost nothing available on this very important topic and many women suffer in silence from the shame. Women need examples of others who have walked through this very painful experience with success. The intention of the film is to acknowledge the issues surrounding addiction and pregnancy and to give a face to the experience of healing, hopefully lessening the stigma so more women seek help.
The filming is complete and a good part of the editing has been done. The editing needs to be resumed and the final edit needs to be completed with music and the inclusion of still photos. A web page needs to be created where I can post an update on the women and their children, as well as, a professional profile on each of the experts. Artwork should be designed for the DVD cover and packaging will need to be worked out. I will also create a short promotional piece for marketing to institutions involved in the addiction/recovery fields.
I believe this can be accomplished with my goal of $3500 as long as I keep the final editing to a minimum. The more I am able to spend on the editing the better the project will be. The music and artistic touch-ups do have a lot of effect on the final product but they are time consuming and expensive to create. I will have to base my editing decisions on the final budget of the documentary.
I want as many people as possible to see this documentary. My hope is that the film will encourage women to admit their behavior and seek help.
Risks and challenges
The greatest risk to this project is not finishing it! A lot has been done and there is still a lot to do.
Finding the right editor to finish the film is my greatest challenge. I need to find an editor with the skill, the sensibility and the dedication to help me make this film what it was born to be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
