About this project

Heroes are Everywhere: Let's help remember them!

I believe that we each have the capacity to be a hero and that there are heroes all over the world. Some have performed an act of daring to save lives, some may have stood up against significant opposition for a greater good, and others were dedicated to caring and nurturing others for decades. Their stories should be shared, celebrated, and can inspire us to reach higher and try harder.

The goal of this project is two-fold:

  • To help share the stories of heroes from small communities around the world. People who have touched lives and helped shape the world around them in a way worthy of celebration.
  • Many small communities around the world don't have the resources to honor their heroes with lasting public art: bronze statuary. This project will provide such an opportunity to as many communities as possible.

You can also keep up to date on my progress at HeroesEverywhere.org.

Project Description

For every $5000 that is donated, I will randomly select a community with a population less than 10,000 around the globe. By random, I mean truly random: I'll throw a dart at a map of the world. The point of this is to demonstrate that heroes are everywhere. I could have targeted some communities ahead of time and used their stories as selling points, but that will defeat the point of the project, which is:

No matter where one goes, there are people like you doing meaningful things for others; there are heroes everywhere!

To identify the heroes, I'll do my best to contact non-political community leaders like Educators, Healthcare Providers, and Librarians to assess community interest and identify a local hero that I can sculpt. The hero need not be living, but must be or have been a real person. The community will need to provide a few things if they would like to participate: have a place to publicly display the sculpture, a description of the importance of the hero to the community, and some information about the hero's appearance. If a community can't participate for some reason, I will try the next nearest small community on the map.

I anticipate there will be some challenges with languages and cultural differences. I'll do everything that I can to resolve any such challenge so that the portraits are well-received by the recipient communities. I live near a large university with a diverse population of international students. When I require, I will enlist the assistance of students from around the world for translation and cultural questions.

The number of portraits will depend upon the total amount of donations. If I raise $10,000, I will make two portraits, if I raise $30,000, I will be able to make 6 bronze portraits for communities around the world!

Your Donations

Who should donate? You!  $1 is all you need to support the project. Every dollar counts towards making this happen. I need your help! $1 isn't much and it will be a great feeling to be involved.

Why should you donate? People all over the world need heroes that they can relate to. Heroes that are neighbors, grandparents, and even children in their community. People need heroes because heroes can inspire the best in each of us. By donating to the project, you'll be helping share the stories of individuals who have made differences in people's lives to others all over the world,  and through generations within the heroes' communities.

You'll also receive some very cool thank-you gifts; read on,  I mention some below...

Where will your money go? The money will go toward supplies, foundry costs,  shipping, and studio overhead while I work on the sculptures. The images on the page are of portraits that I sculpted in a similar style with a like amount of time that I will invest in the portraits for this project. Any extra amount above a multiple of $5000 will go towards further refining the sculptures.

All donors will can recognition on the project website, even for donating $1!

Project Schedule

The duration of the project will vary depending on the total of your donations and therefore, how many portraits that I am able to create. The schedule, below, is for a 10-portrait project --- I'd be thrilled if your enthusiasm for this project attained this level! If I receive enough for 21 or 2 portraits, the process will be accelerated considerably.

Phase 1: May 2012, Ramp up to Production. I will use a dart and a map to find the communities around the world, each with a population less than 10,000. I'll do my best to make contact with the community leaders and determine the willingness and ability to participate.

I will maintain a blog of the process and provide donors and interested people periodic email updates.

Phase 2: June and July 2012. Sculpting commences. In this phase, I build clay sculptures of the heroes and prepare them for casting.

Phase 3: April 2013. Casting. After the sculpting is complete, I make molds, and send the molds off to a foundry, where the bronze casting takes place.

Phase 5: May 2013. Reward Production. While the bronze casting is in progress, I will diligently make your donation rewards that involve sculpting and casting.

Phase 6: January 2014. Reception and Delivery. A public reception with all 10 completed bronze portraits will be held in Central Pennsylvania, US. After the reception, sculptures will be shipped to the final destinations.

Rewards

I have tried to make the rewards interesting, inspiring, meaningful, and enduring. As a thank you for your donation, you may receive anything from note  or a cast of a nose from one of the portraits, to a "Hydrogen Atom" sculpture that I recently made as my foray into conceptual art (three of which are pictured, below). For larger rewards, you can actually receive an indoor cast of one of the portraits, or have a portrait sculpted of a person of your choice for a town of your choice. I work at a University with cartographers for my "day job," so for those donations receiving a map, I assure you you'll receive a frame-able and elegant map of the reaches of this project. As an example, below is collage of map graphics that I made for a movie called No.4 Street of Our Lady.

Thanks for reading this far!

I need your support to make this project happen. Even the smallest donations are welcome and needed.
