DRAGONHYDE is here!
Dragonhyde is your solution for leather-bound, hand stitched spell books, journals and book covers.
These are heirloom quality books designed to be used in your favorite RPG allowing you to customize your spells, abilities and record every detail from your campaign.
Choose from three original lines
Whether you are a fledgling wizard with just a few spells, or a grizzled campaigner with abilities and stories reaching back decades, there is a DragonHyde journal just for you.
Measuring just 3.25" x 5" this spell journal is perfect for the spellcaster on the go. You get twenty ultra-clear polypropylene single card pages. These pages will hold standard size cards such as D&D spell cards, equipment cards, or any other card measuring 2.5" x 3.5". Keep your spells and equipment close at your fingertips, protected by beautiful hand stitched leather.
Additionally, in the back of the Travelling Spell Book is a 40 page journal for you to write about your adventures, keep track of clues, or inscribe new spells, abilities, equipment and potions. The paper is high quality drawing paper, sewn directly into the binding of the book.
Spell Book (version 2)
One suggestion that has come up through the comments section is to have a spell book where the pages are removable. I experimented with some velcro and came up with a method where each signature (group of pages) is removable and replaceable with other signatures.
The Spell Book Version 2 will come with a velcro strip and 3 signatures of pages (plastic sleeves or journals) of your choice. Additional signatures can be purchased at the end of the project so you can mix and match builds for different characters. The cost of the Spell Book version 2 is $40 and extra signatures will be available for only $2 each at the end of the project.
Take a look at the video here:
Perhaps you do not have the need for cards to track your spells and abilities, but just want to be able to use a quality journal to log your adventure. The Adventurer's Journal is perfect for recording the exploits of a single character. Record the life of your character and add in inked drawings, maps, etc. on the high quality drawing paper. This journal measures approximately 4.5" x 6" and is bound in high quality leather. There are 160 pages in this journal
The Campaign Journal is a larger, hefty tomb perfect for documenting the heroic deeds of your entire party. The journal is 6" x 9" in size, uses high quality drawing paper and has four sections hand stitched into the leather cover. This journal is perfect for recording maps, drawings, prose, clues and any other piece of your adventure. With an ample 160 pages, at the end of your campaign you will have a recording of your journey worthy of Bilbo's There and Back Again.
DRAGONHYDE Book Covers
PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT - Today's gaming books are works of art. Gone are the days of black and white line art and cramped, unfriendly fonts. Today's books use high quality paper, full color throughout, and are a joy to read. The price on that, however, are books that cost $50 or more. And then you take them to your friends to play, or to the gaming store, or to a convention, and slowly the covers wear down with surface friction.
Use a DRAGONHYDE Book Cover to protect your investment. Standard sized hardback books fit into the cover flaps and wrap around your book. Unlike plastic book covers, the leather shouldn't adhere to the cover of your book making it the perfect protector for your RPG book investment.
Using Remnant Leather
Hrothgar's Hoard is proud to be partnering with Waxing Dog Studio, a small business that specializes in leather working and leather bound books. Through this partnership, we are able to purchase remnant leather at a very reasonable price. This allows us to pass some savings on to you, and means that each journal will be an original piece of art. Each book will be different or made in very small batches since the leather could be just about anything. In general, colors will be earth-tones, but on occasion we will get some truly unusual pieces of leather. These will most likely be offered as add-ons that you can purchase through BackerKit (see below).
However, if we come across any special sides of leather, I may purchase them in advance as a stretch goal. These special sides may have unusual patterns or colors added to them (I once saw some bright red dragonscale looking leather available, but was too slow to pick it up.) As we reach a stretch goal, I will post some pictures of available pieces so the community can vote on what they would like. Products made from these stretch goals will be available for sale in the Backerkit module on a first come-first served basis (I will be flexible on my buying so that if something is in high demand, I may be able to get multiple pieces of it),
Hrothgar's Hoard is now partnering with two professional artists known for their FRPG work.
Diesel (David LaForce) was lucky enough to get in near the start of TSR and is considered one of the first generation D&D artists. He cut his teeth working beside other artists who would go on to become some of the biggest names in fantasy the fantasy art world: Easley, Elmore, Parkinson, Caldwell, Brom and others. He had the privilage of working beside these greats while he created thousands of illustrations, logos, game prototypes and game boards and maps for TSR gaming products and magazines over his 18 years with them. He was the (almost) exclusive cartographer for Dungeon Magazine for the first 4 years of publication and has worked on virtually every major product line put out by TSR. Much of the iconography we use in the gaming industry today was developed by Diesel in those earlier days. He came up with the looks of maps for many of the TSR product lines including DRAGONLANCE, DARK SUN, BIRTHRIGHT and PLANESCAPE.
Diesel has granted Hrothgar's Hoard the license to engrave three of his pieces of art onto the DragonHyde line of products. The first is that of a dragon perched high upon a cliff, overlooking the vast lands of its domain.
The second illustration is of a certain multi-eyed monster that has destroyed many a party.
Finally, if you are an old-timer like me, you may remember an idol that graced the AD&D Player's Handbook.
These images can be laser engraved onto the cover of any of the journals.
Charles is a freelance artist whose work has been used by WizKids, Fantasy Flight Games, AEG among others. He is perhaps best known for many illustrations that have been featured on Magic the Gathering cards from Wizards of the Coast. His awards include:
- Best Spaceship or Space Scene, DragonCon 2016
- Best Professional Body of Work at ConVergence 2015
- Best Amazon Award, DragonCon 2012

Charles has licensed Hrothgar's Hoard an image of a dragon that is still under works. The unfinished example is shown below:
Other engraving options
If you have a specific thing you would like engraved on your book, you can send me a high quality graphic file and I will engrave it on your book(s).
We will also add other artwork to what is available as a stretch goal. Other stock images may also be used as shown below.
How to add engravings to your books
If you want to add an engraving to your book, simply add the amount listed below to your pledge amount. In the final survey, you can specify which engraving you want. Please note that on the Spell Book and the Book Cover, the artwork can be on the front or back (or both) of the journal. On the Adventurer and Campaign Journals, artwork can only be placed on the back cover. Prices listed below are per image.
- Spell Book: +$10
- Book Cover +$20
- Adventurer's Journal +$15

Buying extras and Backerkit
You may be wondering how to pledge if you want more than one journal or one Spell Book and one Adventurer's Journal. This project will be using the BackerKit software to handle post-project add-ons. This will work just like a shopping cart where you can pick and choose exactly what, and how may of an item you want. So whether you pledge enough to cover the cost of a single reward and then add on to your pledge in Backerkit, or you pledge enough now and use the "credit" amount in Backerkit, you will still get the same great items for your pledge.
This will be the fifth project that I've used Backerkit and have learned how to set the store up so there is minimal confusion on the backer's part.
In addition to purchasing extra journals, in Backerkit, I will be placing specific items from previous projects in the shopping cart system. If you have a favored item from one of my other projects that you'd like to see, please let me know in the comments section.
To get things rolling, right out the gate I'm going to offer a great pen for you to use with your journal.
Dragon Pen - $65
I make the occasional (well, not so occasional) pen to sell at shows and this Dragon Pen is the perfect accessories to use in your journals.
This dramatic and beautifully sculpted pen makes the perfect gift for any Dragon lover. Great attention is given to the exquisite details of the dragon. The clip is a full body, mighty crouching Chinese dragon. The band features a dragon claw grasping the center - a sign of strength and willpower. The pen tip and end cap are covered in the armored scales of the dragon; scales can be seen as a sign of protection. And the Tigers Eye crystal on the end, known to be very effective for instilling courage, strength of will and self-confidence - gripped in place by additional talons.
In keeping with the Dragon theme, I am going to custom mix acrylics based on your chosen dragon. Choose from Red, Blue, Green, Black, Purple, Gold, Silver or Copper and I will call upon the gods of alchemy, cast a spell and create your very own custom pen.
Pictured below are examples of Green and Blue. I have made castings of several others and will post the pictures soon. Each casting IS a custom mix, so while the pictures below are examples, individual pens may differ from what is seen.
Dice DEVIL'S TRAP - $10
I was looking for a reward I could put in for the backer who likes the project, but either doesn't think it is for them or doesn't have the money for a journal. Then I remembered something that I started making about a year ago and has been a big hit at the conventions.
The Dice Devil's Trap is a small cage for you to put your die into when it is rolling badly. This is NOT a dungeon or a jail for your dice, however. Dungeons and Jails seek to punish your die for its bad deeds. However, when a die is released from a Dungeon, it frequently comes out with a bad attitude and may have even learned a few bad habits from other inmates. It is more than likely to continue its wayward habits that got it imprisoned in the first place.
Hrothgar's Hoard believes that when a die is rolling poorly, it is because it has been possessed by a devil, and that devil won't willingly leave the die. When you think that your die is possessed, place it in the cage and then put the Devil's Trap top on top of the cage. The Devil's Trap will then banish the devil out of the die, leaving the die free from bad influences. Strong Devils may require multiple banishments.
For shipping purposes, these items are shipped un-assembled, but they can be put together in just a couple minutes with simple white or yellow glue.
I'm always interested in getting input from my backers on how to improve the project through stretch goals. If you have ideas for stretch goals, please let me know in the comments section. To start things off, I'm going to offer the following:
- $1,000 - ACHIEVED - Project Funded
- $2,000 - ACHIEVED - 4 extra journal pages in Spell Book
- $3,000 - ACHIEVED - additional artwork option from Charles Urbach
- $4,000 - ACHIEVED - 4 extra journal pages in Spell Book
- $5,000 - Dice pouch add-on
- $7,500 - 1 extra spell card page per signature
- $10,000 Free dice pouch with a $100 KS pledge
Other options could include more pen color availability, a glow in the dark additive for pens (I have the stuff, but have never experimented with it), special leather options (depends on availability and quality), a fourth signature for the Spell Book (fyi, a signature is a group of pages. Currently there are 3 signatures in the spell book; 2 for cards, 1 for paper.) Or if we get some good suggestions in the comments section, I'm certainly open to those.
Risks and challenges
This is Hrothgar's Hoard's eighth Kickstarter project and I have been able to learn from my previous mistakes to better streamline the creative process. I honestly see very few risks or challenges at this point in the process.
The designs are finished. The artwork is (almost) done. After the project is complete, I'll be able to begin work and start shipping. Most of my other projects have been 90% shipped prior to the ship date and there is no reason why the same should not apply to this project.
This is the great benefit of having an established track record on Kickstarter. Baring any emergencies, I can state with confidence that you will receive your reward by June of 2018, if not before.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
