City of Zombies is a co-operative dice driven board game, designed as a fun way to sneakily improve children's numeracy skills
City of Zombies is an engaging & fun co-operative board game. It requires players to work out dice combinations & explore resulting permutations in an effort to hit and remove waves of advancing Zombies
Players take on the role of a Hero and team up to fight an ever advancing Zombie horde.
Choose from 20 Hero cards in two different art styles.
Over 60 Zombie cards in each game, supplied in two art styles...
Clear the board of zombies and you can rescue survivors, let zombies reach the barricade and survivors get eaten...
It takes six zombies to overrun your barricade, don't let this happen or you'll lose the game!
Players fight zombies by rolling 3 six sided dice and using the numbers rolled to match the number on the zombie card to remove it.
The 3 dice can be combined in a variety of ways, depending on the skill and knowledge of the players, from simply adding or subtracting the numbers rolled to the use of multiplication, division, squaring or square roots, in any order or combination..
I'll skip the game set up, it's pretty simple...
Here come the Zombies!
- In a 15 turn game Zombies start at the top of the board (on the City level), and players take it in turn to fight zombies by rolling dice.
- Deal out 6 cards from the Zombie deck across the top. Any Event cards are dealt with in the order they come out, follow the instructions on the card(s).
Time to fight some Zombies!
- Each player take it in turn to fight the zombie wave by rolling the 3 dice.
- All 3 dice MUST be used either individually or combined together to end up with a result that matches the big number on one or more of the Zombie cards in play. Those Zombies can then be removed from play and it's the next players turn. If no Zombies can be "hit" then the turn moves on to the next player and no Zombies are removed.
- Once everyone has had a go the turn ends and the plane moves one step closer, any remaining Zombies move down a level and a new wave of Zombies appear.
- You must stop the Zombies from reaching the Barricade at the bottom of the board. Any Zombies that do reach the Barricade will eat some survivors (or scare them away if you don't like the idea of zombies eating their brains...).
- If the board can be cleared of Zombies then more Survivors can escape the City and take shelter with you.
- The more survivors you can save the better your team's ranking.
The game is won if you can keep you barricade from being overrun until the Rescue Plane (Turn Counter) lands and you can make your escape.
If six zombies are on the Barricade at the end of a turn it's overrun and the game is lost.
At the end of the game you can choose to draw a Conclusion card.
Difficulty can easily be reduced or increased as the game comes with rules allowing younger players to fight Zombies just by using simple addition and subtraction. Older players can use multiplication, division , squaring and square roots when combining dice rolls.

City of Zombies is a fantastic game which is great fun for all ages. It's great for children because it helps strengthen numeracy skills.
Easy to pick up and play, City of Zombies grows as they learn new skills.
It's a great game that you can play at home, with friends or in a classroom.
It's been played in prisons as a purposeful activity with prisoners aged 18-21. It's also been played by an adult special needs group, who enjoyed it so much they've asked for it to become a regular activity at the end of every lesson.
I've thoroughly play tested the game with Gamers, Children, Parents and Teachers, here's what they say:
It’s extremely good fun, and far, far better than my expectations led me to believe. It’s a damned good game in fact.
My first reaction after playing was to set it up and play again, and that’s never a bad thing.

With City of Zombies I was very lucky to know two amazing artists: Rory Walker and Alonso Jacobo. Working together we've created a bright and colourful game board, and two art styles of zombies and heroes.
Both styles come with the base game
I was born dyslexic and really struggled with maths at school. Now as a Designer and Father when I saw my daughter struggling with her maths I was determined to help her, so she wouldn't have to go through what I went through.
Having loved playing board games as a child, I decided to design a really entertaining game which would, first and foremost, be fun for us to play together, while at the same time improving her maths skills without her being aware of it. City of Zombies burst forth and saw the light of day!
Since she's grown up I've played the game with family and friends, teachers and experienced gamers and the response has been fantastic. They all think my game's really great fun to play.
With all this number crunching going on, I wanted to know if my game had further educational potential, so it made sense to show my game to an expert. Liz Woodham at The Centre for Mathematical Sciences at Cambridge University was recommended to me - she's very kindly given her thoughts on the game.
It offers opportunities to practise calculation strategies in a non-threatening and motivating context. The game provides a reason to perform all these calculations and the engaging context spurs them on.
It requires children to make decisions and consider different possibilities. This game requires children to decide for themselves what calculations they perform and it encourages them to look for alternative solutions rather than sticking to the first possibility they come across.
It encourages strategic thinking. The game offers opportunities for children to develop winning strategies rather than just relying on chance.
As a team game, it provides opportunities for children to listen to each other, share ideas and reach a consensus.
It is adaptable for a wide range of ages and levels of attainment. A game like this often leads to surprises in that children who might have been considered 'low attaining' can shine.
I'm on Kickstarter to raise funding towards the printing costs of the finished boxed game.
The game has been thoroughly play tested with kids, parents, teachers and at game clubs. All game assets (art and illustrations) are completed. Components (dice & aeroplane turn marker) have been selected and sourced. A PDF of the Rules (basic and advanced) is almost finished and will be available for review and comments on KS shortly. (For card, box and board sizes see FAQ's at bottom of page)
I hope you can see the potential that City of Zombies has and that you choose to support me, either by making a pledge or spreading the word.
Ideally you'll do both!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
So far, I’ve invested my own money, time and effort to getting City of Zombies to the stage where it is now ready to go to print… there are really very few risks remaining:
The game has been thoroughly play tested with people of all ages and in different settings. It delivers a great gaming experience.
The rules are written and will be translated into different languages
The graphics and illustrations are finished, the game board and cards are ready, plus the dice and counter is agreed.
I’ve found a fantastic Board Game & Card manufacturer that’s not too far away from where I live. This company (Cartamundi) is well known for producing ‘Magic The Gathering’ cards here in the UK, so their quality, professionalism and experience means they will be ‘safe pair of hands’ during production.
I have taken time to plan out my business strategy and have been careful to think through budgets and timescales for production
I am confident about the logistics of what is involved in delivering the game, even if it requires worldwide distribution
By reducing the risks in all these ways you can be sure that your pledge will go towards something that will really happen. If I can reach my funding goal the print presses will roll and I would expect to be shipping to backers early December 2013.
I think the issue for Retailers is that if they pledge on Kickstarter their cash-flow can be tied up for quite a length of time.
Most Retailers I have spoken to are reluctant to tie up cash-flow in this way.
So…if you are a Retailer and you're interested in stocking City of Zombies please contact me directly and we can talk about buying stock once the Kickstarter has finished.
If you would be interested in being a collection point for Backers please let me know.

I'm shipping the game on a 5-7 day Royal Mail service. So it should be a maximum of a week after your game is dispatched that it arrives with you.
I have enlisted the help of a company with an established on-line mail order business which sends orders globally. They have a pick, pack and dispatch team who I will be working with to ensure the prompt shipping once we receive the finished game back from Catamundi.
