About

LouLooper is an app that tracks the user's progress around the Louisville Loop, a planned 100 miles hiking and biking trail around the city. Walking the whole Loop needs to become a fitness and community-building goal for the city, an accomplishment worthy of recognition. LouLooper will empower individuals and organizations to set goals and create programs to walk the Loop for recreation and health.

 The LouLooper app will:

  • Document the sections of the Loop the user has walked
  • Provide information to the user about new section openings, events and trail closures
  • Capture individual exercise data.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The world’s great trails and pilgrimages have long had “passports” that record completion of a great journey. Those who walk Spain’s Camino de Santiago cherish their stamped paper passports for the rest of their lives. The Appalachian Trail recently developed a passport of its own. Now Louisville will get a smartphone app that documents people's traveling of the entire Louisville Loop.

The prototype release of LouLooper being funded by this Kickstarter requires three components:

  • A geolocation structure tied to dozens of trailheads around the city. Placement of QR codes is preferable (the act of checking-in and out more closely bonds the user to the trail and will raise the curiosity other Loop users) but GPS bearings would also work.
  • The app itself: a) Records which parts of the loop an individual has walked b) Records time spent on each section, enabling tracking of individual records c) Establishes a line of communications directly between users and the city for notifications and promotions
  • Back-end database and mapping

Version 2.0 upgrades:

  • GPS routing to trailheads, including nearest un-walked section.
  • Enables the presentation of background information on sites of interest along the trail.
  • Opens sponsorship possibilities for businesses and amenities along the route. Sponsors could create special offers for passing LouLoopers, bringing new people to their business and further integrating the Loop with the surrounding community.
  • Data aggregation captures de-personalized data for park district – users, miles walked, timing of walks, etc. – that helps make the case for more robust public support of the Loop. It also provides documentation for corporate wellness and club use.
  • A social media space that gives people the chance to comment on parts of the loop and post pictures of things they see and do.

TIMELINE

It’s my hope that LouLooper can be developed and installed Fall 2015, in time for the opening of several new sections of the Loop.

MARKETING

Raising awareness and use of LouLooper is as important as the development of the app itself. I will leverage groups that are involved in promoting:

  • fitness and exercise
  • environmental conservation
  • community engagement

These are the goals of literally hundreds of recreational, environmental, corporate, church and community groups. We will work through these groups to get the word out about the Loop itself, the app and its benefits. Here is a short list of likely outlets for information about LouLooper.

There are also local TV and radio broadcasters who regularly feature wellness and active-lifestyle subject matter. At least some of those people will help promote LouLooper as they would any other activity designed to get people to exercise.

Local politicians with an interest in promoting the use of Louisville's parks will be asked to mention LouLooper in constituent newsletters and other communications.

Walking clubs and church groups are easily identified and contacted. (Louisville walking and hiking clubs have more than 10,000 members.)

Schools and parent/teacher organizations are interested in promoting physical activity and community engagement

ABOUT DATA COLLECTION AND PRIVACY

LouLooper will protect its users' privacy to the full extent allowed under the law.

The app will aggregate anonymous data and provide information on use of the Loop. This information may be useful to the park district when setting budgets and raising outside funds. It makes the use of LouLooper a small act of advocacy for the parks.

LouLooper will provide no information about identifiable users to the government, marketers, or other third parties. It is our intention to design LouLooper in as fail-safe a manner as possible, making even hacked access to the database worthless for finding any information about a specific user.

THE MAKER

LouLooper is being developed by Tom Johnson, a Louisville-based entrepreneur, writer and marketer. I'm amazed by Louisville's commitment to its parks, which began with the hiring of Frederick Law Olmsted in the late 1800s and continues today with the construction of the Floyd's Fork Parks and Louisville Loop. The creation of LouLooper is my way of supporting that.

I’ve been conceiving and executing creative projects for more than 20 years, including television series, websites, articles, advertisements and events. I have been deeply involved with three different start-ups: television production, technical services, and genetic testing. I am an ardent walker, usually with my dog, Sampson, pulling me along.

Risks and challenges

Estimated costs are based on service provider research, but the development of a creative project on a fixed budget is always risky. Unforeseen complications could raise costs beyond the support of available resources, leaving the app unfinished. In that circumstance, it is my intention to seek corporate or foundation funding to complete the project.

While representatives of the public and private agencies with the greatest control of the Louisville Loop have agreed, in concept, with the placement of QR code geolocaters at trailheads, there has been no formal review of or commitment to that placement. If geolocators cannot be used, it is our intent to base LouLooper on GPS. This will raise the cost of producing the app.

LouLooper empowers independent organizations to provide rewards for people who complete the whole Loop. Those rewards are dependent on LouLooper building a sufficient user base to generate award sponsor interest.

Any funds raised above the $12,500 target will be used to add features to the app.

There is a plan currently under discussion to change the Louisville Loop concept in favor of a shorter, “up and back” trail that would not completely circle the city. A 50-mile up-and-back trail barely diminishes the value of the app. It is my sincere hope that LouLooper will inspire enough people to walk diverse parts of the trail that plans to shorten the Loop will be reconsidered.
