About this project
I am raising funds for the recording and release of my debut, solo full-length album. This album includes ten songs which I have written over the past 18 months. Some were written during my short time living in Vancouver, BC, some during a winter residency at the Banff Creative Arts Centre, some during an inspiring time at the JIWAR Creation & Society residency in Barcelona, some while living in a small medieval community in France at the La Porte Peinte artist residency, and all were refined at my writing desk in my small studio apartment in my current home of Los Angeles. (Wow, I moved around a lot last year!)
The chosen songs are a meditation on femininity; on what it means to be a young woman coming into and understanding her womanhood in a largely male-dominated space. The songs collectively explore themes of dissatisfaction and restlessness, a yearning for faith and grounding, relationships between mothers and daughters, the experience of compressing oneself to make space for one’s male counterpart, allowing anger and ugliness when women are required to be mild mannered and pretty, the sacrifices of generous women before me, and reclaiming the beauty and power of being a woman. Because of the album's subject matter, I have decided to feature exclusively female musicians, to hire exclusively female recording engineers, to record at a female-owned recording studio, and to work with talented women in every other necessary role to bring this album to fruition. This album will be made by women, for women (and all feminine identifying beings!) I feel passionately about creating this body of work with women after years of navigating the gender imbalance of power and influence within the music industry and studio environments. I hope this album will inspire young women to seek out female collaborations in their creative lives.
Cohesiveness is one of the most important things to me as an artist; I have chosen songs that tell a story individually and together, one leading into the next to form a body of work that represents my artistry and my message at this moment in time. I have chiseled away at each song to ensure that every word is intentional, meaningful, and there for a reason. Not unlike my previous work, these songs will focus on simplistic, and at times sparse instrumentation to emphasize the melodic and lyrical themes. In the studio, I will use a simplified drum kit, upright bass, acoustic and electric guitar, accordion, piano, and Hammond organ as the instrumental foundation for the entire album, with further instrumentation building on top as each song calls for it.
Since graduating from Berklee College of Music in December of 2013, I have released two independently made EPs, both created with extremely limited budgets. On this project, with your help, I hope to have the means to spend more creative time in the studio exploring new ideas and to be able to give each detail of this album time and consideration. I am so grateful to every person who contributes to this campaign and helps me bring the project which I have been planning and conceptualizing for the past 12 months to life. Crowdfunding will also allow me to maintain complete creative control of my music (which is of the upmost importance to me) and to collaborate with other artists in many mediums whose work I admire and who will inspire me to reach further. I feel confident that I - with the help of outstanding musicians, engineers, and an amazing team of female creatives - will create a cohesive, artful body of work and step into the next phase of my career as a musician, performer, and songwriter.
Thank you so much for supporting this wonderfully feminine endeavour.

I have worked hard to curate unique and special rewards for you! From the digital download of the album all the way up to a private in-studio visit, there's something for everyone. Any amount you can give is amazing and so appreciated, even if it's $1.
I am offering signed CDs, songwriting lessons, private house concerts, swag bags full of Lindsay Kupser merchandise (including Lindsay Kupser shirts, tote bags, and hand-numbered posters), vinyl copies of the album, invitations to my private album release party, and more!
And, as very special reward for the art lovers/collectors, my dear friend, incredibly talented award-winning artist Samantha Wilson, has kindly agreed to create 10 original artworks exclusive to this campaign - one for each song on the album which she will create while listening to the music. Here are some samples of her stunning work:

If I reach my goal of $12,000 I will be able to cover most of these costs, but not all. Studio time, musician fees, and mixing and mastering are the main priorities to get the album made. Any amount above and beyond the goal will be used for getting the album heard/seen; PR, music video production, and performance associated costs. My dream budget is $18,000, and if I reach that goal here I will send every single person who contributes a personal video message!
Studio recording will commence in October or 2017. My band and I will be recording in a large "Studio A" room for a total of ten (10) days to track the entirety of the instrumental components. Overdubs, vocal sessions, and any remaining recording work will take place as needed in the month to follow in a smaller, more affordable "Studio B" room. In total, I intend for the recording and editing portion of the album to take eight (8) weeks at maximum. I have budgeted an additional eight (8) weeks for mixing, two (2) weeks for mastering, and the remaining three (3) months for music video production, album artwork photography and design, tour booking, press and radio campaign execution, and any additional tasks. I plan to complete the entirety of the project in seven (7) months from start to finish, which, based on my previous recording history and creative process, is generous but still leaves space for explorations as well as delays and unexpected roadblocks. I have every confidence that the project will be completed by May of 2018. As such, most of the available rewards will be delivered in May as well unless otherwise specified.
Two album release events will be held to celebrate the release of this project: one in my hometown of Calgary, AB, and another in my current home of Los Angeles, CA. A Summer 2018 Canada & US tour will follow the album's release, and, depending on the availability of government funding and grants, I hope to expand the tour into Europe. This album will also be a vehicle for me to submit to festivals across North America and Europe.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
All my love,
Risks and challenges
Although $12,000 may seem like quite a lot of money, in terms of recording a full length album, it actually is not. One of the major challenges of this project will be stretching the budget and using each penny wisely. After paying for a week of studio rental, engineering fees, paying musicians fairly, mixing and mastering fees, album artwork photography and design, and marketing/PR, there will be no funding left over, and as such I have designed a strict project budget detailing every cost that leaves a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses/setbacks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
