Where art meets a crowd and a cause
Contemporary South African art is becoming increasingly popular internationally and
art lovers and collectors are looking at this growing market.
The Travelling Art Gallery is a collaborative initiative of South African artists, together with Barbara Lenhard and Florian Gast. Both of them born in Germany are living and working together for nearly ten years in Cape Town, South Africa.
The initiative is all about showcasing and promoting a collection of established and emerging artists to audiences in various cities: Berlin, Frankfurt and either Munich or Hannover. Each pop-up exhibition will be 8-10 days long.
This will happen in June/July 2018 - and we aim to travel for six weeks.
In Berlin the Goerzwerk, an inspiring industrial loft complex, has confirmed a temporary space and close to Hannover (Hildesheim) the art and event location Rasselmania supports the initiative.
Pop-up spaces, or temporary exhibition spaces in cities, are emerging as a modern and welcoming alternative to traditional an art fairs, Pop-up spaces offer artists the chance to expand and strengthen their reach, while exercising greater curatorial freedom with less financial strain, in a more inviting environment for visitors.
Instead of inviting people into a gallery, guests of The Travelling Art Gallery will come to a cool location and visitors will only have a limited time to see and purchase the art on display by The Travelling Art Gallery before the exhibition travels on.
Risks and challenges
All the artists are on board and we have venues in Berlin and Hannover confirmed (without costs).
Our team consists of art and event specialists and we are ready to go and show the world the awesome art that comes from the southern tip of Africa.
The only real challenge are the costs involved to get all the art from Cape Town to Frankfurt and - whatever art is left over - shipped back to South Africa.
