The Items of Terror Below!
Today, we wanted to give you a deep dive into some of the cards that make this game special. If you watched the Dice Tower Live Stream yesterday, you got a little taste of this but we wanted to show you a few up close. We asked TC Petty III, the lead developer on this project to help us out here! You’ll find his wonderful article below.
We need your help getting the word out about our next social stretch goal! Designer Mike Elliot will do an Ask Me Anything if we can hit 50 retweets of this post. It only takes a second and you’ll be retweeting the link to the awesome Dice Tower Video from yesterday! Thanks for your help!
One other bit of housekeeping, we’ll be posting more of Banana Chan’s story and other updates over on our Terror Below Facebook Group and putting links in the comments section for some of the new segments. If you’ve been following along in the updates, make sure to find them there instead. We don’t want to overwhelm your mailbox!
The Items of Terror Below
Hi, T. C. here, developer on Terror Below. It’s been a wonderful ride this last year helping to refine Terror Below into the high-octane, W.O.R.M.-killin’, canyon-ramping, highly-interactive, desert romp that it has become. The lovely folks at Renegade asked me to jump into the conversation and talk about some of the finer points of strategy and tactics in the game.
As a self-defined thinky type smart person, I always enjoy a game that allows me to feel clever. Terror Below gives players a variety of super-cool special abilities and card powers that can be combined in exciting ways to confound your competition. So today, I wanted to talk about the “intellectual side” of Terror Below; the Items.
The first and most important aspect of Items is Value. Sure, weapons are an important tool in your worm hunting arsenal, but what’s the good in holding onto some silly Grenade that you may or may not use? And what if that Grenade is a dud? Very inefficient.
Why not grab an Item instead? Half of the Items in Terror Below provide you with a Point just for using them. Like the Snow Plow, which allows you to move quickly through the rubble left behind by those vicious Worm attacks. A useful ability AND a point. That’s practical. That’s incremental progress. That’s the ethos of properly employed Item strategy!
In the best of circumstances, the desert is considered a place of silent purification, a meditative barren expanse in which to reflect; an opportunity to thrive against adversity in the harshest conditions on Earth. Truth is, the desert is hot, sweaty, dangerous, and with these disgusting worms popping up out of the sand all over the place, I don’t understand why anyone would want to go there.
But, if you’re going to head out into the wasteland, it’s best to be prepared. Why not grab some Nitrous and leave those escaped government experiments in the dust? Nitrous allows you to use 3 additional action points even after you’ve grabbed an armful of Worm eggs. No longer will you have to stand still in the middle of the desert biting your slimy fingernails in anticipation of some Screamer ruining your premium egg collection. Get in, get out, and quickly deliver those hideous creations to respectable nameless individuals conveniently posting bounties around town. I’m sure they have the best intentions for those biological weapons.
The scholarly individual understands that one’s outward appearance unlocks a cool special ability on the inside. Remember the last time you wore a cardigan sweater and suddenly you could recite Ezra Pound’s Cantos from memory? Similarly, Terror Below offers a variety of stylish Hats for the fashionable soul to unlock their true potential.
Perhaps the Black Hat will speak to you; a tortured loner, braving the elements in a color that absorbs additional heat just to further enhance the hardships ahead. Simply donning this rugged anti-hero emblem gains you a point. But, by embracing your true character, each abominable brute’s hide that falls before you in the desert dunes nets you an additional point. You’ve already moved onward by then, your black silhouette obscured by the swirling sands.
However, even more importantly, is the opportunity to mastermind a delicious combination of events that can only be successfully orchestrated by the clever interplay of multiple Items.
Imagine this wondrous scenario: several recent Worm attacks have left the board cluttered with rubble, leaving a perfectly tempting Boomer egg resting alone in the open desert. It would take so much time to clear that rubble and then you risk making all that noise and attracting the nearby worm. What a predicament! It could take several precious turns to complete this puzzle.
But, you came prepared! You brought along a Snow Plow and tricked out your Motorcycle with Nitrous. Not only that, you have a Box of Dynamite strapped to the backseat just for this occasion. You play that Snow Plow to gain a point and weave through all that rubble with ease. Timing is key here as when you arrive to that juicy egg, you instead set off your Dynamite. The Dynamite forces that weakling worm nearby to attack immediately and since you are within its attack pattern, you deal it 4 damage, quickly dispatching it. If there is a matching Bounty, you score even more points.
Then, not to be outdone, you pick up that important egg and immediately engage your Nitrous. Suddenly, you’re blasting to the Motel, delivering your precious cargo in the same turn and completing another Bounty. Plan it right, and you just completed two Bounties on one turn and gained an additional point. One turn, and you’re just about halfway to victory. And you’ve earned the respect and admiration of all your friends.
Thanks to everyone for their support! Happy hunting!
Thanks for being part of our project!
