A New Generation of Wireless Speakers
Trippy is a wireless speaker with Place and Play™ technology. This means that you can forget about annoying cables and Bluetooth. Just play music on your phone and place it on Trippy - the sound is transmitted through magnetic induction.
Trippy connects automatically to any phone that is placed on the speaker.
Our vision was to create a seamless way of transferring music from phone to speaker. We wanted to save you the frustration of failing connection - turning Bluetooth on and off repeatedly. With Trippy, using your speaker will never again be harder than just placing your phone on top of it.
We call the technology Place and Play™. Utilizing four strategically placed magnetic inductors, Trippy can read the electromagnetic fields generated around your phone’s internal speaker, and transmit them as conventional electric signals to Trippy´s sound system. It is science, but it feels like magic.
Place and Play™ is based on electromagnetic induction and Faraday´s law. These physical phenomena describe the interplay between magnetic fields and electric currents. An electric current will always create a magnetic field that shifts depending on the strength and direction of the current. A changing magnetic field, on the other hand, will create an electric current in a so called inductor. This interplay makes both electric engines and the production of electricity at power plants possible.
Almost all electronics, including speakers, transmit signals as electric impulses. This means that every time you are playing a song, it is reduced to a multitude of electric impulses. When music is playing on your phone, every electric impulse creates a magnetic field.
When placed on Trippy, these constantly shifting magnetic fields will induce an electric signal in the sensors. This electric signal is identical to the one that was sent to the phone´s internal speaker when you pressed play. Now the signal is sent to Trippy´s sound system instead, and you can enjoy your music loud and clear.
We wanted to redefine the speaker as a social focal point, around which family and friends can gather to seamlessly share their music with each other. Switching whose song is playing will never again be harder than just lifting one phone off, and placing yours on instead.
Forget about the awkward silence when everyone at a party is waiting for someone's phone to establish a Bluetooth connection. Never again get frustrated because the connection keeps failing. Focus on what is important: Your friends and the music.
Choosing music at your parties will get more democratic than ever before. Instead of a designated playlist provider, that connected his or her phone at the beginning of a party, anyone can simply place their phone on Trippy.
Trippy´s design is true to its Scandinavian heritage. The minimalistic design is complimented by elegant material choices. We chose carbonated bamboo for its slightly darker and sophisticated aesthetics, and the cloth comes in different colors, so that you can find your favorite.
We have worked long and hard on perfecting the look that you can see on Trippy today. The speaker is designed to feel just as natural in a formal office, at a beach or at a rooftop party.
Great attention has been put into the details of Trippy. We wanted the design to be not only stylish but also functional. This is why everything with Trippy, the slanting design included, is made to accommodate the function of the speaker and make your use as seamless as possible.
Our choice of bamboo as material was motivated by both acoustics and the environment. We wanted to create a speaker that was better, more sustainable and more aesthetically appealing than conventional ones in plastic or metal.
Contrary to what you might think, bamboo is technically a grass and not a tree. This makes it super-fast growing (up to 1 meter a day!) and thus one of the most environmentally friendly materials available. In addition, bamboo has great acoustic properties, making it a preferred material for instrument manufacturing all across the globe. It was a given choice for Trippy!
Demonstration video of the Trippy speaker
The idea for a new generation of wireless speakers was born gradually, at university and while traveling the world. During countless get-togethers with new and old friends at parties, dinners and rooftops, we discovered the need for a new type of speaker that could change streaming devices seamlessly, in order to allow greater interaction around the music. This idea grew to a pursuit to redefine the very function of wireless speakers and how we interact around them.
We merged our pursuit with a passion for design, and worked long and hard to build the perfect speaker. The result is a speaker that we proudly display in our own apartments and that will be a great companion at your parties and travels, as well as a much appreciated design element in your home.
Thanks to the founders´ professional experience of production in China, Trippy could be developed in cooperation with the very best developers and producers in Chinese Shenzhen - the world´s epicenter for manufacturing electronics. During the development and sampling process we visited the involved factories regularly in order to ensure that our vision was brought to life in the exact way we envisioned.
During the course of the campaign, we partnered up with a marketing firm that assisted us with the graphical material used in the campaign. Above are various photos from the production of our Kickstarter video. In the middle picture, the founders are having a short break between the shots. Co-founder Erik is getting some makeup by the producer after several hours in the spotlight.
Trippy disassembled with its components visible: the circuit board, the magnetic induction sensors, the speaker drums and the battery. Notice how the sensors have been paired into bundles to reduce disturbing noise otherwise caused by interfering electronic signals. Another interesting detail is that in order to attach the fabric on the speaker drums, we had to cover the drums with a customized metal mesh as seen in the picture above.
Above is a selection of different speaker cloth that we experimented with during the development phase of Trippy. The challenge we faced when choosing speaker cloth was to find organic fabrics that matched the aesthetics of the bamboo casing. Another important aspect was that the fabric had to be transparent enough not to affect the sound quality.
The development of the Trippy switch. We started out with a standard plastic switch but quickly decided we wanted something more robust with an exclusive feel to it. After testing various metal switches, we decided on a classic square-shaped metal switch as seen in the picture to the far right.
After a long period of development, we finally have a few finished Trippy’s in our hands, and we absolutely love them! This is where you come in. We need support in raising the capital to finance large scale production and bring the world the wireless speaker it deserves.
Risks and challenges
We have already put in a lot of work to mitigate any potential risks or challenges up-front. With one of the co-founders permanently based in China, advising businesses on production and sourcing in the region, we are well positioned to respond to any unforeseen challenges.
Both co-founders are also educated lawyers and one is practicing in a leading global law firm, which has made it possible for us to thoroughly examine the entire supply chain and manufacturing process from a legal and CSR perspective, ensuring that every step is compliant with global environmental and labour standards. '
The speaker is already fully developed and tested after many sample rounds, which has proved the functionality and quality of our concept, but also drained our funds. The only piece of the puzzle that is now lacking is sufficient funds to place the first serial order and thus bring Trippy to all our fans worldwide. That´s why we have turned to you and the Kickstarter community for support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
