It's time to move beyond “green building.”49 Cities sets out to crunch the numbers of centuries of unrealized urbanism, all the way from the ideal Roman city to the great utopian projects of the 20th century.
Throughout history architects and planners have dreamed of “better” and different cities—more controllable, more defensible, more efficient, more monumental, more organic, taller, denser, sparser, or greener. Today, faced with the looming end-of-the world predictions—from global warming to post-peak oil energy crises and uncontrolled world urbanization—architects and urbanists find themselves once more at a crossroad, fertile for visionary thinking.
Born out of an eco-urbanism seminar at Princeton University’s School of Architecture, and subsequently exhibited at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York and SPUR in San Francisco, 49 Cities is a call to move beyond “green building” and embrace scale and common sense combined with delirious imagination as tools to reinvent the city. Carefully researched plans, sections, charts, and drawings statistically present each of the 49 cities alongside in-depth commentary and discussion from significant architectural critics and producers in this uniquely comparative reference guide.
Out of print since 2010, WORKac principals Dan Wood and Amale Andraos were inspired by recent conversations with visionary architect Yona Friedman (whose monumental Bridge City is featured in the book) to make this research available once again.
They have joined forces with independent publisher Inventory Press and the design team at Project Projects to bring the project to life for new audiences, with new interviews, improved drawings, design, and production.
What’s new in the 3rd edition
In addition to enhanced illustrations, the cloth-bound third edition includes an interview between Amale Andraos, Dan Wood, Joseph Grima, and Archigram’s Michael Webb, an essay on The Death and Life of Urban Planning by Sam Jacob (founder of FAT Architecture) and new interviews conducted with culture-defining architects and thinkers Chip Lord (Ant Farm) and Yona Friedman.
Designed by Project Projects, this flexi-bound edition improves on the previous paperback editions with a foil-stamped cloth cover, high-quality paper stock, and 4-color printing. Each drawing in the book has been carefully redrawn to improve legibility and reading.
