The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life is the world's best writing podcast. Most episodes feature long interviews, and guests have included both up-and-coming and more established writers. Some of the more well-known guests have been David Sedaris, Rick Moody, Martin Amis, Irvine Welsh, Stephen Elliott, Francesca Lia Block, and Tony Hoagland. You can check out the podcast at thedrunkenodyssey.com, or look for it on iTunes.
While The Drunken Odyssey has presented two videos of readings so far, the podcast has not yet performed an interview on video. One interview I want to undertake demands being filmed.
The Drunken Odyssey hopes to travel to Weeki Wachee state park to interview novelist and Florida kitsch and tourism writer Lu Vickers! This would be the podcast’s first filmed interview, and would feature additional filmed content of the world-famous Weeki Wachee mermaids themselves. This footage would be used in the interview, plus there would be bonus video content as well. There will also be an audio version of the interview, to be presented as an episode of the podcast.
The videos and the downloadable mp3 of the podcast would be available on the website sometime in September.
Risks and challenges
The Drunken Odyssey's video projects have thus far been limited. For this project, Drew Perlmutter, an award winning cinematographer who has recently participated in the Cannes Film Festival, will be behind the camera.
WIth Lu Vickers, who has worked with Weeki Wachee state park in her research, believes also that if we ask well enough in advance, that we should receive cooperative treatment from the managers and employees of the park.
All we need to do is pick a day in which the weather is not hazardous. We will consult the weather channel and try to keep the plan flexible. Since we won't be spending any funds until we travel, there should be no problem. The park is about two hours' drive from where I and my cinematographer live. The weather shouldn't be a big problem, since all of the work on the project will be completed on one day.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
