About this project
Scattered Seeds is a road movie/documentary that explores cross-cultural celebrations within the sustainable food movement and the people growing the change; the farmers and the food artisans.
In Scattered Seeds we follow two old world farmers, Carlo and Gigia, as they travel for the first time from their little rural paradise under attack by the onslaught of the increasing trend toward industrial food-like substances – Yes! Even in Italy! - to the United States, where a growing movement for sustainable agriculture has taken root despite the massive odds against it.
Carlo, a great and humble farmer as well as one of the greatest Italian norcini (someone who transforms the glorious pig into cured delights) and Gigia, an eccentric poet farmer and master of kitchens and hospitality, annually put on one of the greatest little food festivals this world has ever known. It lasts anywhere from three to six days with hundreds of people visiting and nearly a hundred different dishes, not to mention so many fine bottles of fermented and distilled libations. I have never seen a celebration anything like it elsewhere. In my many years of mostly food-focused travel as a photographer, chef, farmhand, baker, and general hedonist for all things well raised and delicious, Carlo and Gigia stand out as two of the most charismatic, skilled, and generous farmers I have ever met.
And once again, their passion for food and desire to draw from the groundswell of positive change happening on the U.S. food front is bringing them to the States for the first time this July for a month-long cross-country journey. They will be visiting small farms across the country to celebrate food artisans here in the States who are forging ahead with transforming our food systems by changing how we relate to the Earth and each other. Along the way there will be light-hearted bits of communication disasters, probable traumas at the general state of the U.S. food system (i.e. truck stops and the vast expanses of the grain belt, our bread basket where fresh nutritious foods are sadly rare), laughing, massive amounts of sharing and celebrating, and we’ll meet the colorful iconoclasts working with the Earth as we travel cross-country through the catastrophes of the conventional and the promise of the growing movement!
They're so excited that Carlo, well, he mentioned that he’s bringing his 6’ long spit swords with him from Italy. I told him that he may have difficulty getting them through customs and that we can have them made here, but he politely insists on sharing his knowhow, as well as his swords. There will be hog dressin’, curing of meats, grand country-style spit roasts, my mobile wood fired oven – yes, that’s right! a beautiful oven at that! - and grand farm feasts across the country!
The lead-up to each meal will allow an ideal opportunity for my production team to visually explore and share the uniqueness of each farm and the people who work that specific piece of land while also allowing us to better get to know central Italian food traditions via two eccentric romantics visiting from Le Marche, Italy. We already have four small family farms from Maine to Iowa signed on and the ultimate number of dinners depends on how much we raise. The trip will culminate with a wedding on a small sustainable-agriculture practicing farm in Iowa.
Scattered Seeds is a celebration that marries centuries-old Italian tradition with passionate and increasingly sustainable U.S. farmers. And we need help to make the marriage a reality. Carlo and Gigia already have their tickets and the first few grand farm dinners are set. A small, yet crackerjack production team has already signed on. All we need is your help to make sure that we can $get through$ the documentary production part of this great project. In the production of this film, We aim to be creative and penny-wise, much like the amazing farmers to be celebrated in the film. However, we are seeking to raise funds for an old school bus, which we plan to deck out, gas, equipment rentals, donations to farms, and other production odds and ends. So, whatta ya say? Be part of making Scattered Seeds! Be part of the celebration for growing change!
