About

Glass plate holder for the SP-445

If you enjoy large format film; you'll absolutely fall in love with large format glass dry plates. The incredible resolution and unrivaled crispness results in a pseudo-3D effect. The rich tonal range shifts seamlessly from deep black to sharp whites, producing unforgettable images.

Unfortunately, the only way to process photographic glass dry plates is in trays or dip tanks, just like Ansel Adam did. This requires a darkroom, large volumes of chemistry and, most likely, getting your fingers in the soup.

So we've designed the SP-445GPH (glass plate holder) for our Film Processing System. We modified a sheet film holder for a prototype, it looks a little rough but it works:

The holders are optimized for 1.8mm thick glass. Due to this thickness, each holder can only accommodate one sheet of glass. The film tank (I guess we need to rename it, maybe call it the processing tank) can accept two holders.

Why not four plates? Again, due to the size of the plates (they are not only obviously thicker but are also wider than sheet film) we would have had to completely retool the tank. Besides, many users of glass plates will be processing each plate individually. This allows them to push/pull, vary contrast etc., as required.

The prototype version has worked well and now it's time to machine a mold so that we can offer this to the analog photography community.

While some may consider it sacrilegious to digitally scan a glass negative, it is the only way to show you that it works. Of course, these scans don't do justice to the actual images.

Soon you'll be able to process glass plates just as easily as film.

Note: Our Kickstarter is for the glass plate holders only. You will need to obtain the SP-445 tank/lid separately. We expect that most potential backers of this campaign are already waiting for their SP-445 systems to arrive. Offering a complete kit as a reward would really (and we mean really) complicate logistics.

If you missed the original Kickstarter, you'll be able to order a complete system either from our soon-to-be-announced online store or from our distributors.

Risks and challenges

This is a "simple" revision of our existing SP-445 film holders. We've already encountered, and solved, most of the possible challenges.

The only new issue is to ensure that the thicker glass, 1.8mm, is clear of the lid hold-down fingers.
