Tools are designed to help solve our every day problems: measuring problems, bolt-tightening problems, furniture-assembling problems, rim-straightening problems, even bottle-opening problems. What separates a merely good tool from a truly great tool, though, is how well it does a job when it needs to be done; any tool is useless if it's back home, downstairs or out in the garage when you really need it.

Meet Tuls - a collection of compact, well-designed, card-sized tools created to solve a range of everyday problems, bundled in functionally complimentary sets, flat enough to ride on your keychain or in your wallet/purse. They're designed to be there for you in those times when you can't reach the tool you wish you had. Tuls are laser cut from 18 gauge stainless steel or titanium, about as thick and rigid as a US dime; tough, durable and built to last.

Why 4? 

It's easy to design a compact tool to be too small or too thin, compromising each function too much in the process. The end result is often a nicely finished piece of hardware that fits well on your keychain ...but not on a common bolt, or bends easily on the first screw or bottle cap.

We decided to take a big step back and seek a better balance between usability, material, size and design. We sorted the functions into complimentary sets (fixing, measuring, listening, opening). The result is a 4-member family of practical, wallet-sized tools, where each has a specific collection of tasks to perform...

Stan

Lucy

Righty tighty, lefty Lucy! Tighten a bolt with an expanded collection of common metric and standard wrenches, straighten a rim with the spoke wrench, hold a 1/8" hex bit,  turn an idle screw on a carburetor, pry open a paint can or open a bottle to celebrate a job well done. Roul

Measure twice, cut once! Roul is world-ready with both metric and standard scales, a square that can also find any angle with the on-board protractor, a perfect plum bob, a dual standard gauge for sizing up dowels, rod stock, wire, drill bits or bolts. Opie

Open a bottle with style! Simple and straight forward, Opie is prefect companion tool to any member of the family. In the Tuls family, Opie is an experiment in offering a popular, single function tools along with other, more multi function tools...

Background

We've been carrying around cardboard (yes, cardboard!) and various metal prototypes of Tuls for a couple months now to test them out in everyday situations, to optimize the feature mix, to see whether they can do their job or learn where they need improvement. Failing early is always good; it leads to a better product sooner!

The final Tuls family will be produced in 18 gauge 304 Stainless Steel and Titanium. We've tested both thinner and thicker stock in several prototypes and settled on 18 gauge for the right balance between rigidity, thickness and weight. Titanium is 1/3 the weight of Stainless Steel and a bit harder as well.

Tuls will be laser cut; a very precise and very high tolerance process with all of the repeatability you would expect from any 3 axis digitally-controlled device. The graphics will be etched with a YAG laser, which will hold up to heavy, repeat use and never rub off.

The project

Our shop has seen a wide range of tool-intensive projects over the years: a major house renovation, a couple antique car rebuilds, bike tune ups, even a sweet tree house project. Many of our tools were handed down by my mechanic/philosopher dad and my power tool expert father-in-law. Tools are great, we love them - and every project usually requires adding a couple more to the collection. 

With your help, we hope to build on our love for tools to bring to life the first of a complete line of well-made, thoughtfully organized pocket, wallet and purse friendly tools for everyone, for all kinds of problem sets, big and small. As part of this goal, we are using this project to help refine the idea, test out some thoughts (i.e. single function Opie) and understand what everyone is most interested in.

Onehundred is a collection of projects within a project: 100 products, designed & produced within 100 miles of our HQ, 100% supported by our crowd funding family - you! Created by my son, Calvin and I, Onehundred combines the amazing manufacturing talents found in our New England backyard with our enthusiastic family of supporters. 

After years of designing & delivering products for big international brands like Apple, Microsoft & GM, it's exciting to bring that global experience down to a hyper-local level where we can work hands on, day-to-day, designing and creating simple, beautiful, useful objects. 

Our first project, Pucs, ended on June 1. The project went very well with lots of support from our family. Pucs are currently in the packing phase and are shipping early. Building on the success of Pucs, Tuls is the second project from the Onehundred team ...with many more to come.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The manufacturing processes to produce Tuls are quite well-known and plentiful in our 100 mile project zone - we have located back up resources if needed. We will be using a combination of laser and water jet cutting, depending on the number of pledges for each family member - both very precise processes, digitally controlled.

For those of you who know us from past projects, we have a lot of product delivery experience and we love to communicate.

Honestly - this is a VERY low-risk project.
