Update #27

Photo shoot and testing

Hi everyone,

the final stages are upon us! We have secured a spot in line with the testing facility that will be performing all the required impact, roll-over, and strap retention tests as well as the chemical test for our CE mark. All in all it will require the destruction of at least 15 helmets and will take a couple of weeks. Let's all think some very positive thoughts.

If all goes well we will receive our certifications and will begin full production! We have decided to split our production shipment into two parts so that we can get the pre-orders out as quickly as possible. Our manufacturer has estimated that production for the first 1,000 helmets will take two weeks, although this is an estimate. Then we will air freight those 1,000 helmets to Los Angeles which will take about a week and immediately begin shipping them out. We have secured all the necessary paper work etc. for importing the helmets, but have been told that since this is our first time importing it is likely they will be stopped for inspection and this could take anywhere from a day to over a week.

As has been the case with this whole journey, we are doing our best to make things happen correctly and quickly, but as you can see so much of the process is out of our hands. I will be sure to keep everyone up to date through these next few important steps so we can all know when to expect shipping to commence.

While we anxiously wait for these steps to complete we've had time to use some of the extra samples for photography etc and have started designing our new website that will launch as soon as we begin production. It has been fun being stopped by people on the street who were anxious to know where we got these helmets. After working on this product for so long I forget that it is still a new product that most people have no idea exists and I take so much pleasure in seeing the excitement as I explain the details. It has meant the world to myself and my team to have such amazing backers help us get this started and we truly hope that you feel the same sence of excitement when you receive your T1 helmets.

Here's a few fun shots of the photo shoots.

Still anxiously awaiting results. Our shipment was held in customs for about a week so we are hoping for results either tomorrow or Monday. I'll be posting as soon as I have some news.

      Ian,

first off, I am sorry to hear of your accident! I hope you weathered the crash well.

Second, as a first-timer manufacturing a bicycle helmet, you are incorrect that I didn't do my homework. I had researched the different options, for over a year and spoken with several manufacturers during that time as well.

Third, if you go back and read the entire comments section from the beginning including the hundreds of messages I received at the time the campaign was live, you will see that there were many requests for rechargeable batteries and for the lights to operate on separate switches to allow for more functionality. Because of this change, the entire circuit board had to be redesigned. That alone turned into a fiasco because of the crooked engineering company we sourced in California to design it basically took our money and never produced any work. What should have taken 3-4 weeks, took 3 months. Finally, after receiving our new board, the helmet body and shell had to be redesigned around it. This process is not a quick or easy one considering it needs to fit thousands of people well and there is no one and done type shape for this.

Lastly, all of these unplanned events obviously caused severe time delays, which as anyone who knows anything of start-ups can tell you requires a lot of money. While I am forever grateful to my Kickstarter backers, I have also spent a great deal of time raising the necessary capital to keep the project moving through false quotes for time and cost from different suppliers.

I appreciate your candid comments and invite you to send me a message with any further comments or complaints.

Thanks for the update. I was going to report this entire project to Kickstarter as vapour-ware, considering the fact it's ~12 months late.

For whatever reason, I decided to back a second Kickstarter project ~7 months ago. All backers of the project were to receive the item within 6 months following the end of the pledging period. Unexpected delays and the project was pushed back by 2 months. As all Kickstarter pledgers probably back these projects with the understanding that unexpected delays may occur, and that these are neither truly unexpected or a deterrence in supporting a project that we want to back, most pledgers seemed to be understanding of the issues that arose. It's OK. Unfortunately, I'll receive that item in 3 week time (4th of December), but am still waiting for the Torch helmet 18 months later.

Nearly all of the issues you've had with the Torch Helmet should have been "expected". They're not delays. They're evidence that you, Nathan Wills, did not do any sort of research before starting this Kickstarter project.

The Torch helmet was supposed to be ready in 6 months, but it has now been 18 months, and we're still waiting. This 12 month delay is 3 times beyond the initial estimated delivery time, which can only mean that you genuinely were not aware that a bicycle helmet isn't just styrofoam shoved inside a plastic shell. You genuinely did not understand that products such as bicycle helmets, and all electronic equipment such as bike lights, need to be tested and certified.

Over the past 18 months, I got engaged, moved into a new house, my hospital department moved into an entirely new hospital building (construction was completed in less than 18 months), I have purchased 4 new bike lights (all because I couldn't wait for the Torch Helmet any longer...), and was hit by a car while I was cycling home from work. I'd like to think that if I had the Torch Helmet earlier, there would have been a chance that the driver would have seen me (nevermind that I was wearing 7 lights at the time).

David, all three colors will be available at the same time. Luckily the color is a very simple process for this type of production so they will all be done at the same time.

Are you prioritising a specific colour in the manufacturing process?
