Torch is a new brand that focuses on lit apparel for the urban rider and skater who's not afraid to have fun after dark. The T1 helmet, our first product, is unique as it draws attention to the rider at night by elevating the light signature above city traffic.
In addition to our primary goal of safety, we focused on creating a helmet with a clean, iconic style geared towards urban riders. To achieve this we started with a classic silhouette and kept the details simple.
The helmet will be produced using an in-mold technique with a thin polycarbonate shell and an expanded polystyrene body. This method creates a very light, yet strong helmet. Torch will also include an adjustable system for a more accurate fit, making the helmet safer and more comfortable.
The helmet features front and rear lenses which the LEDs project onto. This projection method is important as it disperses the light across the lens. This creates increased visibility and brighter light from wider viewing angles. The lenses also protect the LEDs from water, dust, and debris; as you see in the video.
The helmet will be available in three exterior colors (red, black, or white) plus a special Midnight Edition (black with smoked lenses). Torch will be fully CPSC/CE certified and retail for around $100. We are offering a discount to our Kickstarter backers because without your support we cannot make Torch a reality. All funds raised on Kickstarter will go towards tooling, initial production, packaging, and domestic shipping to our backers.
We would like to thank our backers, and everyone who has been involved in the amazing process of the development of Torch. With your help we can make cycling safer !
The T1 and Midnight Edition will come with integrated rechargeable batteries. They will use a USB cable for recharging which will also be included with your purchase.
We are still testing different battery types and will update our backers once we have determined the exact battery that will be included with the helmet.
Yes, the helmet will have several different blinking functions the rider can choose from. We chose to only show the steady light because the blinking appeared to skip on video due to camera speed settings.
During development we compared the difference between LED light viewed through our smoked lens and LED light through a red plastic lens similar to what is currently used on most products today. We noticed very little difference in dimming of light through the smoked lens as compared to the red. We will be testing different gradients with our manufacturer to get the lightest tinting possible yet still matching the color of the shell.
As of our last prototype, the helmet weighs just 13oz. We expect that will remain the same in the production model, but may grow by 1-2oz. depending on the weight of the dial adjuster and new circuits.
We currently have Patent Pending on a utility patent for Torch.
We are planning to offer the helmet in two sizes that will range from 54-61 cm. The helmet will have a dial adjuster to allow the wearer to adjust the fit when needed.
We will be collecting size and color requirements from our backers at the close of the project.
For the $80, $100, and $130 pledges you will receive one helmet. For the $150 you are ordering two helmets and the Retailer $500 order is for 10 helmets not including the Midnight edition.
Unfortunately when we created our incentives in bullet form Kickstarter automatically changed the format for their site. Once we noticed the difference it was too late as you cannot change the incentives once someone has pledged.
We apologize if this has caused any confusion and thank you for your support.
the Torch T1 will be certified as CPSC which is the current requirement for bicycle helmets in the US. We have been working with a consultant during the design and development process to make sure we are in line with the standards. We will not be able to fully test our helmet until we cut tooling with our manufacturers, however they have the experience and team necessary to anticipate any issues ahead of time as they have been manufacturing helmets for over 15 years for other brands.
We will also be testing for the impact standards for foreign markets as well so that we may be in stores internationally.
The front LEDs currently emit 50 Lumens which is not enough to act as a headlight. It is more for the purpose of being seen.
We will be looking at adding this as an option on future models however, due to the amount of requests for this feature.
