Final Week + Stretch Goal!
We are in our final week of the Kickstarter campaign!
We now have a STRETCH GOAL of $35,000. Here is what we want to put the additional funds towards:
- Creating a podcast studio for Baltimore Improv Group performers and the Baltimore comedy community
- Improving theater flooring (this was not accounted for in the initial budget)
- Implementing storefront improvements including new lights and window panes (this was not accounted for in the initial budget)
We are adding two new gift levels in the next 24 hours. Check Kickstarter for the awards.
THANK YOU!!! Stay tuned for a backer-only party once we make all the upgrades to The BIG Theater.
Everyone likes to hang out with funny people, right?
What if Baltimore had a home for hilarious, never-to-be-seen-again comedy? A place where you can be more than entertained; but where you can also become a part of a community. A place where any night of the week you can catch a show, play board and video games, sip a stimulating beverage, and, most of all, LAUGH! That's what Baltimore Improv Group (BIG) wants to give to our city. Won't you help us create it?
We have already started the legwork, and The BIG Theater will have a soft opening on October 6th. We want to make the space top notch, and we are aiming to raise $25,000 to make it truly a world-class theater experience in Baltimore. Since BIG is a 501(c)3, all donations are tax-deductible.
Baltimore Improv Group was named by readers of The Baltimore City Paper as the best place to see comedy in Baltimore in 2017. We can't wait to become even more spectacular!
Why 1727 North Charles and Station North Arts District?
We’ve found a fantastic place for our improv theater at 1727 North Charles Street in the center of Baltimore, but you can get lost in this place. Hello, hello hellooo hellloooooo!
We need your help to turn the space from a large echo chamber without the proper theater stuff to a top-notch performance space with lights, sound, a stage, classroom space, and lots of other cool things.
We want people to think of The BIG Theater as a destination for date night, birthdays, or just a place to go when you need a laugh. We want a BIG sign so everyone can easily find us. We want so much visibility that the people who live in the county can’t ignore our presence. Also, we want to host birthday parties, special events, and comedy workshops.
You can make all of this happen! The BIG Theater makes all of our dreams come true, and the Station North Arts & Entertainment District perfectly fits our needs. We are so in awe of the art-makers who have made Station North a destination for art, music, and theater -- The Charles Theater, Station North Arts Cafe, The Motor House, Joe Squared, The Wind-Up Space, and more.
Why Baltimore Improv Group?
Baltimore Improv Group currently serves as one of the largest arts education venues in the area outside of a university space. We teach improvisational comedy to adults and kids and everyone in-between. We teach improv classes to youth through the Young Audiences/Arts For Learning Maryland in the greater Baltimore area and throughout the state of Maryland.
- Baltimore City Paper readers named The Baltimore Improv Group as the best comedy outlet in 2017.
- BIG provided high-quality instruction to more than 500 adults, teens, and youth in the 2017 calendar year.
- In 2017, BIG entertained more than 6,000 patrons with 200+ performances from troupes and special projects
- We have strong partnerships with Johns Hopkins, Coppin State, Loyola University, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Towson University, and University of Maryland Baltimore County
Why the Name 'The BIG Theater?'
With the new space, we are going to call it The BIG Theater to pay homage to Baltimore Improv Group's name for the past 14 years. Part of this history is building community engagement with affordable arts programming in Baltimore since 2004. We look forward to expanding this mission in the years to come.
The new theater will bring everything under one roof. We won’t just have classes and improv shows; we can hold special events, dance parties, burlesque, and other things that you will suggest.
We’re most excited about making new friends in Station North and discovering the best ways to use our new space to connect high-quality comedy to the Baltimore area.
Improv comedy has taken off like a rocket in the last few years. Baltimore Improv Group already serves as the place to see and perform the best improv comedy in the area. We want to look the part!
What Are the Funding Priorities for the New Space?
For more information, review the materials list. The BIG Theater received a generous $10k donation from Alison and Fred Lohr. At this point, we need to raise $25,000 to reach all of our goals!
Risks and challenges
In building a new space, new and unexpected costs can emerge. We will use the project update page to communicate any changes or unexpected costs.
If we exceed $25,000, then any additional funding will go towards initiatives that build community engagement. We will be in touch with all backers after the campaign with a survey to vote on the initiative.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
