VOX and Paper Bull need a piano and pianist to provide the musical backbone of Humperdinck's opera 'Hansel and Gretel'.
VOX Maine: A Classical Singers' Collaborative (www.facebook.com/VOXmaine) and Paper Bull Puppets (www.facebook.com/paperbull) were both started by young Mainers passionate about their respective art forms. Paper Bull presents a form of traditional Japanese puppetry called Bunraku. The puppets in this production will be child-sized, and operated by three puppeteers dressed in black but fully visible to the audience. One of operators will also be the voice of the puppet, a member of VOX Maine and trained classical singer. Together, VOX and Paper Bull will bring to life Engelbert Humperdink's opera Hansel and Gretel, based on the Grimm brother's fairy tale.
The production will be fully staged with piano accompaniment, and will be performed at Mayo Street Arts (mayostreetarts.org) in Portland, Maine on December 15th and 16th of this year. The one thing that the wonderful Mayo Street Theater does not have is a piano, so we need to rent one. In addition, we also need to find an excellent pianist who can rehearse with us and play for both performances.
This is where you come in: Renting and transporting an upright piano from local Portland piano and music gallery Starbird Music (www.starbirdmusic.com) will cost $700, and we would like to be able to pay our pianist $350, a rate that will include a full-cast rehearsal, a dress-rehearsal and both performances. The cast and crew will be working and performing for free, but we would like to be able to show our appreciation to our pianist - its not easy being a musician these days!
