About

Necronomicon: Prelude is a CYOA(Choose Your Own Adventure) game, set in an alternate history 1920’s Chicago. This is prohibition era Chicago, with our own mix of Lovecraftian horror and noir elements. In this game, your choices matter. Big or small, they will come to effect your personal story. Don’t worry about replayability, with our natural system, the smallest choices effect your story, so there is always the path you could have taken. Remember, with Necronomicon, it’s Your Choices, Your Story!

Our goal, is to make the kind of game that we, as gamers, would love to play. We aren't trying to make the next Flappy Bird, or Angry Birds. (Note: Maybe we need birds?) We are trying to create a story that is engaging, mysterious, and completely unique.

You can find the Alpha at http://goo.gl/FTsWUw for android!

In gaming, more often than not, your choices do not matter. They’re red and blue, good or bad. We don’t want that in our game. Real life is grey. The little choice you make getting up in the morning could drastically effect your life. For example, in our story, we have an early interaction with a homeless man, named Jacob. This interaction splits any possible further interactions you have with him. He remembers you. This might mean you could experience a whole side chapter, or you might end up never seeing him again. But let’s not forget the big choices. Save the world, or save the girl? How do you choose to investigate? What do those choices lead you to? We try very hard to make this world seem alive. We have accomplished this with dynamic events. At certain points in the story, such as “The Party”, we simulate time passing, so when you choose to talk to one person, your options change, and the story moves forward. People walk away, you walk through the halls, your story and the information you gather is different each playthrough. We can also create unique experiences with hints of randomly chosen content, and some seeded variables. Two people very well may not get to see the same events, even if they chose the same options. Just like in real life, there is a randomness to your experience. You plan and plot, but a random event causes those careful plans to crumble.

We chose a story, as opposed to a full game for several reasons. A big factor in this is frankly, we lack the experience. We don’t know much about 3D modeling. We wanted to make our app, we wanted to tell our story. We thought about it for a while, before it came to us. Everyone we know, loved the CYOA books. So, we decided to make a CYOA app, for an older, more mature audience. Because it is an app, we have wonderful technology that allows us to let the player have more input over the main character. For instance, you can customize his name, choose his weapons, and his vice. This should let players get more into the mindset of the character. We track your progress in the game, and we allow the player to see how their choices alter the world around them.

We decided to create our universe, with heavy Lovecraft influence, because in our minds, magic has a price. Not everyone can use it. It should tax the user, because it is a knowledge that in reality, we cannot have. In H.P. Lovecraft’s writings, we saw a similar use of magic. As such, the core principle of magic in our game, is that if you use magic, you are glimpsing the unimaginable, you are tapping into a power greater than the mind can bear. It’s a language of Elder Beings. It grinds your sanity down, every time you use it. Most people go mad very quickly, when they experiment with this kind of knowledge. Detectives and mysteries play a large role in Lovecraft’s works, and it fit very well in our noir Chicago based story. In a world where technology is rapidly advancing, the battle of faith versus science is a very important one. The fact that there may be something greater than yourself, is an issue one of our villains comes to face. Last but not least, Lovecraft’s themes of morality, the consequences of your actions, and the fact that you must live with your choices seemed to mesh perfectly with our ideals for the game.

We fit our technological advances into the CYOA story, through a few interesting ideas. First. we have our Notebook. The main character writes his experiences and notes down in it, and we also allow the player to write their own ideas and notes down. This allows the user to put the game aside for a while, then come back, and be up to date, from just reading the notes. We also track what you have done in the game, and use that to effect the story, and shape the path the character goes down. And lastly, we have developed a fun way to approach combat, that isn’t dice rolling, or completely scripted events. But don’t worry, we’ve included an auto resolve feature, so those of you who just want to read, can do so.

Our ultimate goal for our app, would be a series of CYOA books. They would share an overarching plot, and choices would span multiple books. They would also be able to be read independently, of course. This is a difficult undertaking, but it would allow a truly unique experience for the reader, and we would love to be able to provide that kind of story. Of course, our first step is finishing this story.

We aim to make a game that explores the grey areas of choice. As in real life, your choices and morality are really determined by your fellow humans. It’s about how an NPC will react to you, not a red or blue option. For instance, one person might find your choice upsetting, but if you were speaking to another person, they might like you more. All in all, our dialogue is written with that NPC in mind, and how they think and feel, and how they would react.

You may be wondering what we are going to be using this money for. Half of it is going to obtaining the hardware and software needed to develop and publish on mobile platforms, such as iOS, and Android. A smaller portion is going into Wolf Scone Studio, for any unexpected expenses. And lastly, we are saving a small amount for ourselves, so that we can be paid for our time, and spend more than just our spare time on the app. This would end up being below minimum wage, for those curious.

Currently, the story has a lot of different mechanics. We are trying new things, and showing off what we can do. Some are isolated in chapters, and some span multiple. We would love to hear what you think of them, and what you did and did not enjoy. We’ll take everything into consideration, so that our final product is something that all our readers can enjoy!

STRETCH GOALS

The stretch goal at $5000 would include the Sister Path, which is the story branch that involves investigating Ms. Banks’ sister. This will be an entire path of story, just like the current branch. The other part of this goal will be porting the app to Windows Phones, as well as achievements, and Facebook and twitter connections.

The Stretch Goal at $7000 would include the Mafia Path, which is the story branch that involves investigating the mafia. This will be an entire path of story, just like the current branch. The other part of this goal will be the inclusion of art at key points in the story.

More will be revealed when we come closer to them!

Risks and challenges

Developing an app on multiple platforms takes a lot of effort, since each platform has it's own challenges, and different code. We are already preparing to release on each platform, with an entire code rewrite. We plan on making updates and fixes as seamless as possible.

One of the issues we have in development is that stories and novels are linear in design. We are doing our best to make choices matter in our game, while still providing different stories for our users, or if all else fails we could make potato salad.
