About

New MexiCon is the first indie tabletop roleplaying game convention in New Mexico. We strive to offer a wide variety of games in a friendly and welcoming environment. Join us in 2018 for our best convention yet!

A weekend of gaming in Albuquerque: April 20th - 22nd, 2018.

  • Thursday | Pre-con Party 7pm (free w/ $60+ Kickstarter Pledge) |
  • Friday | 8pm-Midnight |
  • Saturday | 9am-1pm | Lunch | 2pm-6pm | Dinner | 8pm-Midnight
  • Sunday | 9am-1pm | Post-Con BBQ 3pm (Tickets available in Add-ons) |

Join us for all FIVE sessions of gaming!

The genesis of New MexiCon came from late night talks at Origins 2014. A few fellow New Mexicans mentioned putting on a Con and several voices called out variations of “I’d go to that!” Less than five months later New MexiCon was born. We were thirty people playing small press indie games in a dark room. Now, four years later, we have continued iterating on a Con experience that we feel is unique.

What makes us unique?...

Why are we putting on a Con? We want people playing games. We want people to play more games. We want people playing different games. Providing a welcoming space where this can happen is our goal for New MexiCon. Expanding circles and getting out to play with other gamers will give experiences at the table you won’t be able to get just playing with friends. Fostering local and regional communities that will broaden our appreciation of this hobby that we all love will give us access to more people to play games and share ideas with. Everybody wins!

There is only one thing better than having games that you love dearly. Finding new games to love dearly! At New MexiCon we encourage people to gravitate not only to those things that you know and love but to try new things as well. We hope you find new ways to game!

The traditional model for tabletop roleplaying game conventions has been a large space with lots of tables. This works well for some games but sometimes the nuances of a scene will get lost in a big  room with background noise. This is why we have structured New MexiCon differently. We want you to have an environment for your game that will be as free from distraction as possible. We think this makes for better games.

Mustering is a fun way to pitch your game or find a game to play on the fly! To kick things off, all people running games will pitch their game to the con. Next, players choose the games they want to be in. A symbol on your badge will help determine priority and resolve ties. The result? We get a large number of people playing really awesome games!

If you want to sign up to run a game or play a game before the convention, we have you covered! After the close of the Kickstarter, there will be a selection of games available for you to pre-register for online.  More information will follow in Backer Updates.

As much as we like to game we also want to make sure folks have time to eat! Community is important to us, and what better way to get to know someone than to share a meal. This is why we schedule a lunch and dinner break so everyone has time to grab some noms, meet awesome new people, and still make the next gaming slot.

Mustering at New MexiCon encourages people to bring a wide variety of tabletop roleplaying games. Our convention is shaped by what games people are excited to run! Just to give you an idea of the scope of games pitched, here are some of the games people brought to New MexiCon 2017:

Swords Without Master, A Penny For My Thoughts, A Tragedy in 5 Acts, Chill (3rd edition), Sprawl, Forget Me Not, Atlas Reckoning, Cartel, The Watch, Fate Accelerated, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Slayer Cake (LARP), Masks, Paranoia, Primetime Adventures, Apocalypse World (2e), Skeletons, 13th Age, Lasers and Feelings, Blades in the Dark, House of Ill Fortune, Space Wurm vs. Moonicorn, Wrath of the Autarch, Velvet Glove, Dread, Scum & Villainy, Dirty Secrets, Street Fighting, Inheritance, 7th Sea (2e), The Zantabulous Zorcerer of Zo, and many more!

This year we are excited to have partnered with a new Hotel, the MCM Elegante! Here are some awesome features of this new venue:

  • Room to grow- The MCM Elegante is ready to be our home for years to come.
  • On-site bar - Great for hanging out with people after games. Chat and have a drink!
  • On-site restaurant - You can eat a stone’s throw away from mustering.
  • Free airport shuttle - Up to 5 miles around the hotel and airport pickup/dropoff.
  • Breakfast - Free breakfast available for hotel guests. $5.95 for everyone else!
  • Security - Gated parking with security 24 hours a day.
  • Swimming pool - Take a break from games and go for a swim!
  • Convention suite/break room - Hang out, talk games, and relax in the Lobo Room.
  • Private rooms for gaming - Beds will be removed, making room for tables and chairs.
  • Event oriented staff - Friendly hotel staff is accustomed to hosting events of all sizes.

We listened to your feedback and tried our best to find a place that would suit our con better and we think we just may have found New MexiCon’s new home.

We have a number of GMs here at New MexiCon whose mastery we want to celebrate. We will single out these GMs to run a GM Spotlight game for select guests! Each pledge of $60+ will enter you in a raffle to win a seat at the table!

SPOTLIGHT GM: Jahmal ‘Mad Jay’ Brown

Jahmal ‘Mad Jay’ Brown is a freelance game writer. He’s written the upcoming Clockwinders a World of Adventure for Fate and is currently working on a Cortex Prime Spotlight setting about militarized posthumans fighting off a reality incursion. Burning Wheel and Urban Shadows are his RPG jams. You probably can find Jahmal running RPGs at a gaming con near you, he attends several throughout the year.

SPOTLIGHT GAME: The Last Age of Elves (Burning Wheel)

Man has taken the lodestone from the Muan tunnels by blood. They flee to the broken city of Huluan. Our wards are now weakened and minions of shadow return. No one has travelled much outside the Maun Hills since the days of the Elven wars, yet it must be done. The lodestone must be replaced. The realms are corrupt but you are Roden, children of the luminary and you are free!

SPOTLIGHT GM: Sarah 'Doombringer' Richardson

Sarah Richardson is a game designer, layout and graphic artist, writer, and Marketing Director for Magpie Games. She is currently serving as the Resource Coordinator for the Indie Games Developer Network. She is the author of the 70s girl gang RPG Velvet Glove and a co-author of the feminine horror RPG Bluebeard's Bride. Sarah has written for The Complete Oracle, The Baby Bestiary 1 & 2, and Kult: Lost Divinites.

SPOTLIGHT GAME: Blood Spattered Brides (Lamentations of the Flame Princess)

Once you were his blushing bride, now you are a furious killer. Return to the house you left long ago with a band of other brides at your side, ready to tear this place apart in your quest to find the man who tried to kill you all - and enact your own bloody satisfaction.

SPOTLIGHT GM: Paul Beakley

Paul Beakley has been roleplaying for 40 years, wrote some terrible gaming stuff in the mid-90s, and currently writes the Indie Game Reading Club column, a Featured Collection on Google Plus (LINK). “Your gaming posts are my favorite thing to read on the Internet right now. Having unvarnished clear thinking about games in a context I can understand is so valuable,” – Luke Crane, Head of Games at Kickstarter.com and creator of The Burning Wheel.

SPOTLIGHT GAME: Home Is Where You Hang Your Axe (Sagas of the Icelanders)

Sagas of the Icelanders features violent family melodrama in a primitive Viking settlement. We’ll create our tiny community and follow it wherever it goes for a few hours: honor will be challenged and lost and regained, women and men will struggle within their expected roles, and the stresses of living in dark ages Iceland will bring out the very best – and worst – in everyone. Paul brings a strongly improvisational style to this game, so be prepared to think fast and bring your A-game.

Every pledge helps us bring you the best convention possible. Every guest helps us brings new and interesting characters to the table. And every game master helps us tell the moving and adventurous stories of our dreams. We love our spotlight GMs and want to give everyone a chance to play with these masters of the craft. So, when you buy a badge you automatically enter a raffle to be a part of the spotlight game! Or you can back at THE WHOLE ENCHILADA level to get a guaranteed spot in a GM spotlight game.

With an increase in hotel costs and growing numbers of attendees, we're looking to raise $1,500. We need your help to bring together this weekend of great gaming and awesome people against the beautiful southwestern backdrop of the Land of Enchantment.

Backing this Kickstarter will allow us to:

  • Stock our Lobo Room with snacks and water
  • Have an on-site printer
  • Offer free badges to staff and volunteers
  • Put on a post-con BBQ

Keep your games alive by posting and making new friends!

Matt Bohnhoff is house manager for New MexiCon. Matt publishes his own silly games through Wasteland of Enchantment and organizes games for teenagers at local libraries and schools. He believes in the power of games as tools of expression, bonding, and education.

Katherine Fackrell is the website manager for New MexiCon. She is the proud recipient of the first New MexiCon IndieSomnia Award for playing too many games instead of sleeping, and is definitely not a vampire.

Jade Hopkins married into gaming and serves as general administrative support for New MexiCon. When not geek-adjacent, Jade spends her time doing project management and photography.

Nick Hopkins is the Con Chair for New MexiCon 2018. He had a very long stretch away from gaming but jumped back in with both feet in 2012. He manages the Albuquerque Area Meetup site helping people to find games with other people and runs a game for teens at the local library every other Saturday.

Marissa Kelly is house manager for New MexiCon. She is co-owner of Magpie Games and senior art director for John Wick Presents. In addition to her creative work, she spends her summers as a research assistant for both archaeological and paleontological sites.

Justin Rogers, or "J.Ro", is the program director for New MexiCon, and has done some writing, editing, and music composition for various indie RPG projects. He enjoys unreleased Apocalypse World hacks and "indie hipster barely-a-game" games, but continues to resist finding out what a Pathfinder is.

Risks and challenges

The contract is signed with the venue and our Kickstarter is launching on time. We have intentionally kept the stretch goals simple to make sure that we have them in place by the time of the con.

We have tried to minimize the chances of any steep increases in cost by keeping things as simple as we can. The venue is a place that hosts a large number of events and will have everything we need.

New MexiCon is in our fifth year. We are still learning but have come a long way from where we were in 2014. Our experiences along the way have made us better able to adapt to changes. We are looking to make this our best con yet!
