What is New MexiCon? New MexiCon is still New Mexico’s ONLY small press indie RPG convention (we keep waiting!). We strive to make a safe space for folks to come and play the widest possible number of games that we can muster!
The idea for New MexiCon came into being when a bunch of gamers were sitting around after the midnight game let out at Origins 2014. The question was asked, “Why don’t you all put a Con on in New Mexico? We would go to that!” Four months later, we were having our first Con!
NewMexiCon uses the same model that Indie Games on Demand at Origins and GenCon use. During each time slot GMs will offer games they wish to run. With our card-based Owl Heart mustering system we get everyone into games quickly and fairly. If a game doesn’t have enough players to run then that GM jumps into another game and plays. If you are excited to run something let us know at our G+ community!
While it’s hard to have hard and fast rules, most of the folks we have at our Con are looking for games a bit more off the beaten path.
Some of the games we have played in recent years are: The Clay That Woke, Swords Without Masters, Prime Time Adventures, The Zantabulous Zorcerer of Zo, Masks, Hellas, Best Friends, Fate (many flavors!), Epyllion, Bluebeard’s Bride, All Outta Bubblegum, Tenro Bansho Zero, Sagas of the Icelanders, World of Dew, Mouse Guard, World Wide Wrestling, 3:16 Carnage Among the Stars, Dogs in the Vineyard, Into the Odd, Monsterhearts, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Urban Shadows, Wrath of the Autarch, and many more!
We are very pleased to announce that we are in the Ramada Albuquerque East. It is the first year we have held the Con in the same place. The one thing that makes our venue different is as follows:
EVERY GAME WILL RUN IN IT’S OWN PRIVATE ROOM.
This location makes it possible for us to have suites for EVERY game, a central mustering location, and pool access for guests if you want to take a break from games. We started with individual rooms in 2015 and we have carried it through 2016. It made every game even better and it is a priority for us now and going forward. The hotel will take beds out of the rooms to allow for a comfortable gaming space with large tables. The rooms are suites with adjoining French doors.
There are good local food options immediately around the convention: Sadie's (watch out, it’s spicy!), The Owl Cafe, Panda Express, India Palace and many more within a short drive. We have an Office Depot and a Target right around the corner in case you didn’t bring enough pencils and index cards!
Come play some games and enjoy some green chile! If you're interested in getting a room, give the hotel a call at (505) 271-1000. A room with a king is $62.95 + tax and a double room with two queens is $69.95. Or you can back at one of our Enchilada levels and we'll take care of getting a room for you!
The backerkit survey will have a section to indicate that you are interested in running games (we hope you are!). Mark that section on your form, bring materials for the games you want to run, and pitch them!
If they go, fantastic! If they don’t, jump into another game and try again later! Not every game will run so don’t feel bad! It’s an opportunity to play in something new!
We know there is absolutely no one out there who wouldn’t like to come and hang out to play some indie games but in case there are a few out there who want to come but life has conspired to keep you from attending, fear not! We have assembled a pdf bundle to allow you to share in some indie games even if you will miss out on the company! The games we have in our pdf bundle so far are:
- Spark by Jason Pitre
- The Quiet Year, The Dark Forest (Free PDF), by Avery Alder at Buried Without Ceremony
- Houses of the Blooded, by John Wick
- Bulldogs! Fate Core edition, by Brennan Taylor at Galileo Games
- The Play's The Thing, by Mark Diaz Truman
- The Cold Ruins of Lastlife, by Brendan Conway
- Godsend Agenda, by Jerry Grayson at Khepera Publishing
- Velvet Glove, Notebook edition, by Sarah Richardson
- And...Hillfolk, by Robin D. Laws at Pelgrane Press
- And...curse the darkness, by Matt McFarland at Growling Door Games
Chips and Salsa ($20) If you can’t stay for the full Con you can grab this appetizer of small press indie games to wet your appetite for next year! We have a group of excellent indie game developers who have donated their games to help us generate some revenue to get our Con on. Grab some cool games and come play with us next year!

In addition, like any good meal, you get Chips & Salsa with it too! We will get your New MexiCon pdf bundle to you as soon as it is assembled and ready!

The Chimichanga ($100) A deep fried burrito. Wow. This is for folks who would like to bring some attention to their business. As a major sponsor we will name one of our individual game rooms after you or your company’s name. Every session we send folks to play in a game room with your name in it! Thank you very much for your support! Just because you want your name out is no reason not to show up to the Con, though! This level includes a badge for the entire weekend and the 2017 New MexiCon pdf bundle.
The Full Enchilada ($250) The full Con experience! At this level you get the 2017 New MexiCon pdf bundle, a badge for the entire weekend of gaming and we will take care of your hotel room from Friday night until Sunday! Click this level and just show up to play.
We have some sweet stretch goals this year and we hope we get to bring them all to you!
$2,000 - SNACK TIME
First up, at $2,000 we will provide snacks. This was a really popular option from last year and we enjoyed giving everyone a space to hang, eat, talk and wind down (or up?!) from gaming.
$3,000 - GAME DESIGNER GUESTS
Next at $3,000, we will fly out our first guest game designers, Matt McFarland and Michelle Lyons-McFarland! Matt worked extensively on games from White Wolf while Michelle has worked heavily in the industry with her work including Shadowrun, Battletech and D&D. They have started Growling Door games together and have made great games like Chill 3rd edition, A Tragedy in Five Acts, Daedalus and curse the darkness.
$4,000 - GAME DESIGNER GUEST
Up at $4,000, we will fly our second guest game designer and writer, Kenneth Hite. He has done extensive work with Pelgrane press on their Gumshoe line and is one half of the show on the Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff Podcast. He has a large body of work including Trail of Cthulhu, Night’s Black Agents and also worked on Bubblegumshoe among many others.
We will announce more stretch goals as they fund!
Over the past few years New MexiCon has recruited an amazing team of folks willing to dedicate their time and energy to making sure this convention happens. Listed below are some of our core staff, but there are tons of other awesome Burqueños helping behind the scenes, too.
Nick Hopkins is an honorary New Mexican and New MexiCon Con Chair. He was born in Illinois but moved here just before starting second grade. He started playing AD&D in 4th grade, moving on to Top Secret and Marvel FASERIP and finally (gasp) Rifts in high school. He had a large amount of time away from games but rediscovered them in 2010 where he played a two year campaign of Call of Cthulhu. He found indie games in 2011 and has been reading game books steadily ever since. New MexiCon is one of the ways he shares his love of roleplaying games with people.
Katherine Fackrell is the proud recipient of the first IndieSomnia Award, granted at New MexiCon 2014 for playing too many games and not sleeping. She manages the New MexiCon website and is definitely not a vampire.
J. Derrick Kapchinsky is the Community Manager for New MexiCon and Director of Operations for Magpie Games. In addition to his operational and financial duties at Magpie, he is also a developmental editor, proofer, and indexer. His indices have appeared in games such as Epyllion, Masks: A New Generation, and 7th Sea: Second Edition. He also likes cats. He, in fact, likes cats more than he likes people.
Mark Diaz Truman is an independent game developer, co-owner of Magpie Games (magpiegames.com), and the New MexiCon Master of Coin. Mark has authored/co-authored three indie RPGs—The Play’s the Thing, Our Last Best Hope, and the ENnie award winning Urban Shadows—and serves as Editor in Chief of The Fate Codex and Project Manager for 7th Sea: Second Edition. Mark is passionate about creating an inclusive and diverse gaming community and is thrilled to support New MexiCon’s third year!
Justin Rogers is excited to work as the Program Manager for this year’s New MexiCon and implement the OwlHeart mustering system that he co-created. He had an uncommon introduction to RPGs -- Justin's played at least a dozen different unpublished Powered by the Apocalypse and Fate games, but doesn't really have any idea what a Pathfinder is. Despite (or because of) this, he does some freelance editing and wrote a piece for the Halcyon City Herald supplement to Magpie Games’ Masks.
Marissa Kelly (MK) and Matt Bohnhoff are handling Front of House for New MexiCon. Marissa is the co-founder of Magpie Games, author of Epyllion, and co-author of Bluebeard’s Bride. In addition to her design work, Marissa is senior art director for John Wick Presents (7th Sea). Matt does a bunch of awesome stuff, but he is a mysterious man who would rather not comment at this time.
Risks and challenges
We have a contract signed by the Ramada East people. They are eager to have us back! We are running the kickstarter to bank cash for the Con but we have the hearty support of Magpie Games and John Wick Productions to help us out if we need them to.
Unexpected expenses are likely to be small, like if we need to rent tables and chairs this year. Last year these were included but we are ready to intervene if necessary.
This is our fourth time doing this and the first time we are using the same space as last year. We hope this will minimize any unforeseen problems.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
