PRIIT PÄRN POSTERS ONLY 5 of 20 REMAINING!
NEW PÄRNOGRAPHERS POSTERS ONLY 12 of 20 REMAINING!
I've made arrangements for Priit Pärn, one of the most influential animators of all time, to fly to Brooklyn in order to attend a specially curated screening program of his work September 27th, 28th, and 29th 2012. This Estonian plant ecologist-turned-artist/animator has not been to NYC since 1989; this is a rare opportunity to meet him in-person and to see his films on the 'big screen'. The six-part screening program simply titled PRIIT PÄRN includes a selection of his post-soviet era films: HOTEL E (1992), 1895 (1995), NIGHT OF THE CARROTS (1998), KARL AND MARILYN (2003), FRANK AND WENDY (2003-2005), LIFE WITHOUT GABRIELLA FERRI (2008), & DIVERS IN THE RAIN (2010). Priit's trademark style employs dark humor, embraces the absurd, and exploits national stereotypes. He delivers cultural criticism and questions our ideas of a social utopia with the sharpest of wit. Not a single minute will disappoint. Attending one of the six screening engagements (right) will also offer you the special opportunity to contribute to the content of the printed program, the goal of this Kickstarter (see below).
Beginning September 1st 2012, a complimentary/supporting program entitled THE NEW PÄRNOGRAPHERS will present contemporary animated shorts by over a dozen artists from around the world whose work has been inspired by Priit Pärn. Some of the participating animators include: Koji Yamamura (Japan), Igor Kovalyov (Russia/USA), Erik Alunrum & Mihkel Reha (Estonia), Dylan Hayes (USA) Ami Lindholm (Finland), Joni Manisto (Finland), Christy Karacas (USA), Anna Virtanen (Finland), Gretta Johnson (USA) Elli Vuorinen (Finland), Kaspar Jancis (Estonia), Ülo Pikkov (Estonia) and more. One animated short will screen before a feature film each evening over the course of the 26 day period leading up to Priit's visit on the 27th.
THE GOAL : A LIMITED EDITION PRINTING IN YOUR HANDS!
The goal is to create a printed program that will act as an exhibition catalog for the entire month of animation screenings. The publication will commemorate Priit's visit to NYC while helping to illustrate his influence on contemporary animation by drawing connections between the screening program PRIIT PÄRN (in person) and the supporting program THE NEW PÄRNOGRAPHERS. Included: a short story told by the curator, a special introduction by the Estonian Consulate, full-color film stills and descriptions of Priit Pärn's films, full-page reproductions of both poster designs / fliers, full-color film stills from the supporting animated shorts with quotes by some of the participating animators about Priit's influence, highlights from the Q&A sessions conducted at the screenings here in New York, AND the potential for your input (keep reading).
THIS WILL BE THE ONLY PRINTING, NO SECOND EDITIONS.
The goal is set at the minimum needed to create this program. This is a fundraising effort for the project's sake, not profit. Any funding beyond the goal will go towards improving the design elements, print quality (nicer paper stock, embossed cover, special binding, etc) and collecting additional content for the program itself. All funding will be spent on improving the quality of the rewards-- your rewards.
THE REWARDS : GET INVOLVED
Many of these incentives are participatory so that you can be a part of this historic event-- so get excited !
+ ADVANCED TICKETS TO ONE OF SIX SCREENING PROGRAMS - These tickets are VERY limited and these screening dates will sell out.
With one of these tickets you not only secure yourself a seat for the screening, you will also have the opportunity to meet Priit Pärn, and your questions could end up in the printed program! The screenings will be held at the intimate 30-seat screening venue, Spectacle Theater. 124 South 3rd Street, Brooklyn NY. See dates and times on the right column. Only 7 seats will be available at the door each night.
+ A COPY OF THE PRINTED PROGRAM - 40+ paged full-color publication will act as an exhibition catalog for both screening programs: PRIIT PARN (in person) and THE NEW PÄRNOGRAPHERS. It will include:
- Film stills and curators notes on HOTEL E, 1895, NIGHT OF THE CARROTS, KARL AND MARILYN, FRANK AND WENDY, LIFE WITHOUT GABRIELLA FERRI, and DIVERS IN THE RAIN.
- Film stills and curator's notes on the 15 shorts by animators from around the world (confirmed films to be announced over the course of this Kickstarter)
- A short story about how I was first introduced to Priit's work.
- Full-page poster reproductions for both poster designs.
- A special forward by a member of the Estonian Consulate
- Photographs and excerpts from the Q & A sessions
- Content submitted by artists, animators and you.
This special program will not be printed again and is only available here, through this Kickstarter.
+ CONTRIBUTE A FEW WORDS OF YOUR OWN - The supporting program, THE NEW PÄRNOGRAPHERS, aims to demonstrate Priit's influence on contemporary animators, but the screening program itself is limited to the 25 days leading up to Priit's visit. The films shown are a curated sample of the larger impact of his work. Has Priit inspired you, or influenced your films? Would you like to say something about one of his pieces in particular? Write a note and we'll include it in a special section of the printed program. The more comments the better, as it further emphasizes the concept of the screening program. "100 words or less" + Your Name + Your Country (no web addresses, thanks) ::))
+ HAND SILK-SCREENED POSTERS - Created by the Brooklyn-based graphic designer Aaron Vinton. These HUGE 24" X 18" posters are incredibly beautiful. Perfect to stick on your studio wall, to frame for your office or secure yours now to stash as a birthday/off-to-film-school/holiday gift that will be cherished forever.
+ Opportunities for INDIVIDUALS to have YOUR NAME in the colophon or for BOOK STORES/UNIVERSITIES/ANIMATION STUDIOS to have your LOGO listed as a supporter of this project are on the table. Don't miss out!
