Hello, I’m Kim, the designer behind Kimthings – an exciting range of functional accessories made from my own distinctive fabric patterns.
Creating original fabrics and products has been my personal mission since the 90’s. Seeing life through the lenses of my young boys, appreciating their fascination with birds, insects and plants, I had fertile ideas for fabric designs. I dreamed of making an enduring line of purposeful items out of my distinctive designs that inspire a daring spirit in everybody who uses them.
This Kickstarter campaign is to help develop and expand my design concept from a small home based enterprise to a larger more commercially viable business. I invite you to share in the success of this campaign: your contribution will be valuable in helping me to raise the funds I need. To thank you I will send you a product of your choosing in your favourite fabric depending on the amount you pledge. It's a win-win for us all!
Below is a list of Kimthings products, their values and details:
These are the pattern and colour ways you will be able to choose from during this campaign. If the campaign is successful we will expand our fabric range in the future.
Here’s how it works
First, you decide how much you wish to pledge to fund this project. For the particular pledge level you have chosen from the list on the right, you can put together any combination of products to make up that value.
Second, once the funding is successful I will send you a questionnaire asking which products you have chosen to the value of your pledge and which fabrics you would like. For example: If you pledge $50 (Level 3) you can choose a makeup bag ($20 each) and a toiletries bag ($30 each), or you could choose five luggage tags ($10 each).
Each of our 10 products has a value, below, for your reference when selecting your rewards.
Why this campaign?
Starting small can be tough.
I needed to print fabric and manufacture a couple of products to see if people would like them and want to buy them. Bulk fabric printers require minimum quantity orders to make production worthwhile. Printing small quantities is way more expensive, as is manufacturing and distribution.
I tested the market and my products met the challenge. Since the first Kimthings' bags hit the shelves 15 years ago EVERY bag has been snatched up. At first, I had my fabric digitally printed. My costs were high but it was the only way I could see how my designs would appear. I designed the fabric and made the products and, even when I outsourced the sewing I couldn't keep up with demand. I realized there are no half measures in this industry: graduating from small cottage industry to viable production is a whole different world.
I am fortunate to have two partners with expertise and experience in business, manufacturing and sales. As a team we have developed the prototypes and established firm connections with manufacturers. Together with your generosity we are certain to make a success of this venture!
Risks and challenges
Right now the fabrics are designed and proofed, samples have been made and are ready for production. I have confidence in the factory we will be using.
Within the partnership we have expertise and experience in business, manufacturing, sales and design. However, even with all the best laid plans, most ventures experience unanticipated hiccups and delays. We will give regular progress updates and be transparent about any issues that arise. With your generosity anything is possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
