New Preview Trailer and Updates

Posted by Whalenought Studios (Creator)

Greetings Spicers!

We’ve put together a preview trailer showcasing some new systems and content. Enjoy!

(you can view on youtube for HD staglands action!)

One location we didn’t feature in the preview trailer was Tratis Saltis, a favorite due to the very different environment it brings. The area’s subsurface is an expanse of hot springs like veins breathing heat from depths below, and it gives some variety to the usually snow blasted peninsula. The persistently wet ground has made the few surviving settlers here build above surface level upon giant trees and mushrooms, and you wade through a dangerous bog below to traverse the district. Vol is an "eye ball" planet, and in the perpetually cold regions like the Staglands heated places like these are hard to come by and usually cherished for what vegetation and life they provide. Regrettably for these settlers, some of that is quite dangerous.

We'll be showing this location off in a future update more in-depth!

As you may catch from that intro, we recently received our Whalenought stamp for sealing the twine sealed physical journals when we finish printing them.

We had an excellent time testing it out, with varied results (mostly on my (Joe) inability to measure good amounts of wax). We'll have a nice sized vat of heated wax prepared for the day of medieval manual labor.

We also tried some very technical orange-hued lighting for the video with some good old fashioned whiskey. The only light source that matters.

We’re continuing to write the copy for Erlein’s handbook and putting together the art book when we get some off time (building and exporting). We’ll be finishing up with those next month and will aim for sending them out early thereafter so those applicable can get them before the game.

An additional art mention are some new and improved portraits for Necholai’s avatar! Here’s a preview of some of the newer portraits and updated ones available for the moon lord to use as a face, along with some early game NPCs you can find:

These don’t include all the NPCs that you can add to your party, so if you chose the companion option as a portrait-level backer, yours has yet to come. Prior to release we'll show off all the portraits in the game so you can bask in your eternal Vol world glory. Each race/sex will have 5 portraits to choose from. So if you create your whole party from scratch you’ll be able to choose between 50 unique portraits in total!

Another Awesome CRPG:

Up on Indie GoGo right now is an interesting RPG also set in a chilly world called ICY. If you haven’t seen Icy yet, check it out! The game looks very well put together and has some beautiful art, definitely something that looks like it will be fun to get immersed in.

Hey everyone, just a reminder if you'd like to see the DRM-free version of SitS on GOG, please vote for it on GOG wishlist: If nothing else, it's good exposure for the game to remain near the top of the wishlist.

Great looking trailer. Great mood, rhythm and content. Very nice job indeed.
Very much looking forwards to the game and all the work you put into it.

@Dave The way the game is set up is that it starts at DOS sizes and scales up 200 or 300 percent based on the size and aspect ratio of your monitor, so that you'll always see the game at its intended zoom level, without noticeable letterboxing or stretching. Because of the way we're doing this, and because of pixel warping that would ensue, zooming with a mousewheel is not possible.

The fonts in the game are all bitmaps (images) and unlike a typical vector font cannot be altered. That said, we've tried out several fonts to make sure they're as readable as possible within the limitations of a pixel art game.

      * A fun trick you might be able to do with your graphics card is to have it auto smooth graphics when the resolution is smaller than your native resolution. We've played with this and had it resemble old arcade machine algorithms to smooth out pixel art, and is a pretty neat effect.

@Torment: No problem. But It's actually the 28th, if I'm not mistaken.

Coming May 25 2015 :) Heh. Thanks for pointing out the hidden message.

That's certainly one way to set a release date!

Looking really awesome. Did you all decode the final message in the trailer? :)

@Whalenought: A question came up on RPGWatch: Will players be able to zoom-in / out during the game (i.e., using the mouse scroll wheel a la BG:EE), or is? And any options to adjust font sizes?

Also, thanks for giving a shoutout to "Icy" I'm backing the game and trying to spread the word as much as possible.

@Tabacila Thanks! Very Romanian! While neither of us are, this region of Vol is inspired by an eastern european bronze age, and most of the names and verbiage will reflect that (besides some of the more fantastical ones).

Awesome! Can't wait for this to be released!
By the way, do you have any Romanians on your dev team? A lot of the characters' names in the video were Romanian sounding (Anca, Dragos, Ciprian, Gheorghe...). Got a laugh out of that.

Thanks Torment! Also very happy with the way polish has been turning out thanks to beta feedback, much needed in the UI department.

We have a short piece in the Making of/Art book detailing the first choices screen, with some behind the scenes pictures of developing it and post-work. We knew we wanted to have that introductory scene have an FMV hosting it from the initial concept, relieved we were able to get it in despite some technical hurdles/size limits. We had one with an in-game world art character as a backup, but were happy to toss it out.

    11. Torment- The Enduring Exile on

Great to see what a couple of months of dev time can buy in polish. The UI alone looks so much better.

In a future update I'd love to know what process you used to make that intro with the woman writing behind the desk. I love the way it's been rendered.
