About this project
Here Come the Stretch Goals!
Wowsers! Thank you all so much for your generosity in funding this project. We're so thrilled we'll be going ahead with the print run. We've come up with the following stretch goals, which if we achieve them, will add a few more goodies for helping us along the way :)
- If we hit £1000 - everyone who has pledge £20 or more will receive sick Alien in the Outfield Stickers! Perfect for your skateboard, laptop or Commodore 64! ACHIEVED!
- If we hit £1200 - everyone who has pledged £20 or more will not only receive sick stickers but also a rad Alien in the Outfield Patch! Spruce up your stone-washed denim jacket with some sci-fi flair! ACHIEVED!
- If we hit £1500 - everyone who has pledged £20 or more will not only receive sick stickers and a rad patch but a whole 'nother comic book, Zinethology, which will include our Bruce Springsteen tribute, Racing in the Street. NB: This may change to a print of Racing in the Street if publication of Zinethology is delayed. ACHIEVED!
- You want more? If we're lucky enough to receive backing in excess of £1500, we've got a few more ideas that will be unlocked at that time ;)
Alien in the Outfield is an eighties-set underdog sci-fi sports adventure comic!
Sometime back in the mid-1980’s, a stranded extra-terrestrial adolescent escapes from a government research laboratory and is discovered by Joel, another lonely new kid in town. They find unexpected allies in misfit little league baseball team, The Roswell Rockets, and work together to evade nefarious middle school bullies and shadowy government agents, help the Alien return to its home planet...and maybe even win the New Mexico state little league baseball championship.
Featuring a diverse collection of characters, this cosmic adventure spans time and space! We hope this is truly an all-ages book. As our loveable misfits come together to save their extraterrestrial star player they’ll learn valuable lessons about friendship and teamwork. To appeal to our older readers, there’s heaps of references to classic eighties cinema throughout - along with a few surprise twists at the end that we hope you won’t see coming. Like the movies that inspired it, you’ll find action, adventure, thrill, spills, slapstick laughs and even a burgeoning romance or two!
But don't just take our word for it - check out what others have said about the series...
“Alien in the Outfield channels the spirit of sporting glory from Teen Wolf, mixes in a little of the ‘lovably relatable outsider’ from E.T. and comes up with a baseball story about an alien child who crash lands in middle America and becomes the MVP of the local little league team. There is little not to like about Kirby’s reverential writing and Barnett’s charming visuals.”
John Townsend, Starburst Magazine
“It’s a fantastic first comic – Great for new readers, or parent-child bonding, to show them the appeal of comics.”
"Baseball. Aliens. The Eighties. Stir together in a bowl, add ink, paper and leave to cook for half an hour on a medium heat. The result? Alien in the Outfield. This light hearted, sci-fi/sports mash up is great...especially for those who have just started getting into comics and want an easy, exciting read."

Why we need your support!
Alien in the Outfield is a comic book miniseries, written by Jack Kirby and illustrated by Mat Barnett. We have independently published the series across four issues over the last three years. The book has received a great reception at conventions and we’ve been thrilled by the reviews and positive feedback we’ve received along the way.
We're asking for funding to collect the complete run in a single 100-page trade paperback. We’ve self-funded the printing for the black and white single issues but we now want to produce a final full-colour definitive edition in the highest quality it deserves. We've even expanded the story with extra pages, polished up the inks and made lots of new edits and adjustments based on feedback we've received along the way.
To find our more about the book - and read the original draft of issue one - head over to our website!
In return for helping us knock this book right out of the park, we have a whole heap of cosmic swag lined up for you. The book itself is available in digital or print editions. You can grab exclusive limited edition art prints or a sweet retro 80's movie poster featuring the cover of the book. The cover art will be so hot-off-the-press we haven't even finished it to show you yet but trust us...it will be rad! Because we've hand drawn our artwork the old fashioned way, we're giving away mounted squares of original inking. We're also making our convention team tee-shirts available for the very first time. Finally, be sure to check out the unique opportunity to step back into the eighties and have a walk-on part in the book itself!
We're doing the cover art, book design and colouring ourselves, so the only production cost will be £500 for an initial print run. This will ensure we have enough shiny new copies for our backers - with a few extra to spare and take to conventions. The remaining £300 will cover the first tranche of rewards, the Kickstarter fees and leave us a little to cover convention tabling later in the year. Our initial goal is simply to raise enough to launch our book out there into the world. If we raise more money, then we will be able to print further copies and help fund additional conventions. Should the project prove super successful then we have some ambitious stretch goals and shiny new rewards that existing backers may benefit from automatically.
The creators, Jack Kirby and Matt Barnett originally set out to make a comic book that parents could share with their kids and provide them with a gateway to the world of comics.
As they have promoted the book on the convention circuit, they have attracted many new readers, both young and old.
Jack and Mat have maintained an active fanbase and the series has been supported and reviewed positively by blogs and podcasts. Along the way, a growing range of branded merchandise and other spin offs has accompanied the series – including tee-shirts, badges, action figures and a table top game.
They have been keen to encourage new creators and continue to document their creative process on their website - www.alienintheoutfield.com - where they provide a how-to (or how-not-to) guide for other budding indie creators looking to launch their own comics.
Team Alien would like to thank...
- Dylan Harvey for putting together our promotional video - it was a heroic effort considering what we gave him to work with.
- Awesome retro-pop-rock outfit Fire Tiger for letting us use their track 'Energy' in our promotional material.
- The Comic Geek Speak podcast team - particularly Pants, Bryan and Murd - who have been super supportive since the beginning and always gave us a mention in their LSCC reports.
- Special thanks to our guest cover artists from across the series - some of whose work you can see in the video above: Ted Haddon (#1), Ayesha Khan (#2), Meryl Trussler (#3) and Morgan Rashand (#4). You're all aces!
- Shout out to Orbital Comics - our friendly local comic book retailer - who kindly let us film part of our video in store.
Keep watching the skies!

Risks and challenges
The comic has already been written and completed but we want to revisit some of the artwork, tighten up the story and present it in the way we always intended. The original issues were in black and white – a result of print cost and time constraints. The new edition will be in full RETRO technicolor! The revised book will be completed and printed in time for launch at London Super Comic Convention in August of this year and all our supporters will have their hands on a hot-off-the-press copy shortly afterwards. We are already hard at work on the book, we now need your support so we can afford to print and promote it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
