About this project
Stylus Plus Keyring
A premium keyring stylus for all touch screen devices, phones, tablets etc... Machined from high-grade aluminium, in particular one that has been chosen specifically to receive a superior bead blast finish, fitted with an ultra-smooth fabric coated capacitive tip. It is also a container keyring for storing items such as cash notes and anything else you can fit inside.
Update: I am looking at getting more coverage of my keyring and am pleased that this has been picked up by Ipadstylusblog - head on over there to look at the feature article - http://ipadstylusblog.com/stylus-plus-keyring-multi-purpose-stylus/
It has to be the right size as well, small enough for a keyring, big enough to be useful, both on stylus use and storing things. I have designed this product to be the most effective in both size and function.
Quality is hugely important to me. I have spent a significant amount of time researching and manufacturing prototypes to ensure the finished product is of a very high standard, a premium standard. This is why the Stylus Plus Keyring comes with one of the latest capacitive tips for touch screen devices, fabric mesh microfibre. This tip delivers an ultra-smooth, high precision transition across touch screen devices.
The container itself is machined from high-grade aluminium and bead blasted for a premium colour finish, in style and texture. When you feel it in your hand, you will appreciate the quality.
Features and benefits:
- Premium quality
- Can be held and used at an angle as an artist would use to sketch
- Use your touch screen device in cold weather whilst wearing gloves
- Use on the golf course whilst wearing golf glove to access your GPS golf apps
- Tip is removable allowing access at both ends of the container
- Store your cash notes
- Store whatever you can fit inside
In order to keep costs down I will be dispatching the keyrings without retail packaging, which will also be better for the environment. They will come in a padded Jiffy bag.
I am also working with locally sourced engineering companies to manufacture the aluminium parts of the keyring. I could have outsourced this abroad for cheaper costs, but I wanted to support companies in my local area where possible. This has also allowed me to personally oversee every stage of development.
Background to the Stylus Plus Keyring
I came up with the idea originally when out walking in the cold, wearing gloves and trying to use my phone to reply to messages. I ended up taking my glove off just to type, then putting it back on and repeating the process again and again, very frustrating particularly as my hands feel the cold. I eventually bought some gloves which allow you to use a touch screen device, however typing was difficult as I was not able to be precise and it became frustrating to be constantly deleting and retyping text. I thought a keyring stylus would be the solution, it would be accurate and allow me to keep my gloves on, but wanted to add extra functionality. The extra functionality had to be something I was capable of achieving and I thought about a container for carrying cash notes as well as anything else you can fit inside.
So back in February 2013, I drew a rough picture and started contacting local engineering companies to see if it was possible to build something like that and what the sort of costs involved would be. I wanted to use local companies in my area to support them and also so that I could oversee the entire development personally. I found a great engineering company and have been working with them now for over 3 months on the prototypes and I would highly recommend them. I also started sourcing the highest quality capacitive tip I could find. These proved to be abroad in Taiwan and I ordered some samples which were all delivered according to their schedule.
I drew a crude concept without finalised dimensions to get the ball rolling with the local engineering company. I sat down with their designer and worked out a proper computer design model to the exact dimensions and style that I wanted. From this I was able to order in the tooling so that prototypes could be manufactured, all to the exact size to fit the capactive tip. The whole process took from February 2013 until June 2013 where I am now ready to launch this project on Kickstarter.
I have been using one of my prototypes, in fact the one pictured above, for the last 3 weeks and I am really pleased with it. The quality is excellent, it feels well balanced and the capacitive tip works very well. I am now ready to go into a full production run and look forward to answering any questions future backers may have.
Risks and challenges
All of my manufacturing sides are set up and ready to go. As with all manufacturing there may be some delays in the production run that cannot be foreseen. If there are delays I will be pushing hard to move things forward and will keep everyone up to date with timescales.
The caps on the container part of the keyring on the prototypes squeak a bit when you screw them on. This was due to a minute increase in thickness of the cap thread following the application of paint in the bead blasting. On the full production run I will adjust the thickness of the cap thread to try and eliminate the squeak. It may be that the squeak remains if the reduction is not enough, but this does not affect the use of the keyring.
If there are a lot of backers that request the Stylus Plus Keyring, I have two friends who are ready to assist with the packing and mailing out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
