Welcome aboard the battle of ideas! We're warning you, things are about to get rough, and you might lose some friends in the process, but hey – it's all in the name of delivering a compelling argument!
FENCE: The Card Game transforms the argumentative process into a vigorous, intensity-driven strategy game, in which players battle for supremacy in the war of ideas. Pitting friends and family against each other, it's every man for himself in this game with one ultimate objective – dominating the argument.
Indeed, there are no permanent friends or enemies. With your primary interest of winning the battle of ideas, you can do whatever it takes to get there – make bonds, break bonds, fake bonds – any strategy at your disposal (within the rules of the game, of course).
FENCE: The Card Game is designed to be played between 2-6 players, with rounds lasting between 20-40 minutes! The game is composed of three main categories of cards – HAND cards, FLOW cards, and THESIS cards. We'll go over their functions in greater detail later on!
This graphic represents the FLOW of your argument, which is formed by the accumulation of these 11 FLOW cards in this order. Of course, there are many different ways to structure a compelling argument, but this structure represents a foolproof way of building a case. Your objective is simple – be the first to build the strongest possible argument. This is no easy task however, because when everyone has that same objective, things are going to get very tense very quickly.
These are the tools of the trade, your weapons of war. Use these HAND cards strategically, building your argument systematically while also tearing apart the arguments of others. Be sure to build some alliances along the way to gain useful favors, but remember, alliances are temporary. Stay vigilant, and be ready to counter any attacks thrown your way. Your competition will stop at nothing to achieve political dominance, and neither should you.
There are four types of HAND cards at your disposal: BOOSTERS to build up your argument, DERAILERS to tear people down, MEDIATORS to build bonds and benefit multiple people, and COUNTERS to combat any oncoming attacks.
Here's how a typical game of FENCE is set up. Each player begins the game with one THESIS card and is dealt five HAND cards each. Two draw piles are set up for the HAND cards and FLOW cards respectively.
At the start of each turn, a player draws one HAND card from the draw pile and may play two moves. Possible moves include adding cards to your FLOW, stripping opponents of their cards, trading weak cards for better ones, and many more! The game proceeds in a clockwise fashion around the table.
The game ends when a player manages to construct a complete argument, which comprises three sets of POINT, EVIDENCE and LINK cards, as well as a FINAL SAY card of a matching color as the THESIS.
Let's take a closer look at the various cards that we have in this game.
BOOSTER cards represent useful techniques and strategies that you can employ to enhance your argumentative skills. These cards offer a range of functions, with the primary goal of benefiting your arguments. Functions include adding FLOW cards to your argument, adding HAND cards to your arsenal, as well as giving you extra moves to play in each turn.

DERAILER cards represent a wide range of logical fallacies and argumentative flaws that serve to weaken any argument. You can use these cards to tear people's arguments down, whether it is stripping them of their HAND cards, disrupting the FLOW of their arguments, or even wiping out their entire argument completely.

A friend in need is a friend indeed, or so they say. Sometimes, pulling someone out of the mud could buy you favors in the future. MEDIATOR cards allow you to establish rapport between fellow players, reducing their incentive to attack you. They allow you and another player of your choice to benefit through bonus FLOW or HAND cards. Give this strategy a shot, although we don't promise they won't backstab you further down the road.

And of course, in such tense situations where your arguments are subject to attacks from all sides, we want you to be well equipped to fend off these blows. Use COUNTER cards to combat any incoming attacks, which have a range of effects including cancelling out DERAILER attempts and even reversing enemy attacks back on themselves. Trust us, you're going to want a couple of these in your arsenal!

Every argument begins with a clear thesis, which is a statement or theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved. Each player begins the game with a THESIS card, representing the position which they will strive to defend throughout the game.
These are the basic building blocks to any coherent argument. POINT cards represent specific ideas related to the thesis, which must be backed up by solid evidence (EVIDENCE cards), followed by LINK cards to ensure the coherency of the argument. By structuring your arguments systematically, you will be able to deliver your perspective with great conviction and soundness.
With the structure of your argument in place, all that's left for you to do is to conclude your argument. Demonstrate your conviction to your stance with the FINAL SAY card. Ensure that the color of your card matches with that of the THESIS card, and you would have conclusively won the game!

In today’s chaotic and volatile political climate, people are getting increasingly polarized and receding into political bubbles, making objective discussions of issues increasingly difficult.
This issue is made worse by increased bias and partisanship of media organizations, making it hard to obtain an objective view of reality and the truth behind issues. People are also becoming more interested in one-upmanship instead of finding the truth, leading to the ignoring of facts and statistics in an attempt to preserve ideological narratives.
FENCE aims to be a bridge for people to reach across the political aisle, seeing issues from multiple perspectives. Our goal is to unify people towards a common goal of objectivity and truth. We want to encourage open-mindedness and free speech, because the freedom to speak is the freedom to think. We should actively place our ideas up for contention, so they may be refined and developed. FENCE believes that no idea is above scrutiny, and that everything can and will be questioned. It is through this continual process of challenging ideas that we can grow and develop intellectually.
Risks and challenges
This is the first time we are working on a project of this scale, so we're taking every challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow! We're currently working around the clock to squash any knick knacks, and ensure the project launch goes smoothly. We already have a producer in place and a means of shipping this card game around the world, so we will try our very best to get everything completed and delivered on time!
