About this project
1. As motorcyclists ourselves, we're frustrated that too often, there's a choice between form and function with motorcycle gear.
2. We don't want to sacrifice classic styling for safety features. We don't want our bags to look like a traffic cone or a space suit, but we also want them to be safe and comfortable to ride with.
3. We designed gear that's functional, isn't stuffy-looking or fragile, and looks good off of the motorcycle too.
4. We believe that truly durable goods that are built to last a lifetime and support local craftsmen are worth paying for. The same leather craftsman that makes our motorcycle's saddlebags and seats makes all of our leather and waxed-canvas goods, too. He's passionate and experienced in his craft.
5. We designed the bags we want to use day in and day out. Pre-sales of our leather & canvas goods will help us reach critical mass for a full 50-state (and beyond!) launch of our new motorcycles and motorcycle gear.
We’ve met with great small-scale success building our original production motorcycle, the Halcyon 50 2-stroke:
We've sold dozens of our motorcycles around the world for three years. Despite our success, we keep running into our own current production limits & reach. So, it’s time for a new incarnation of Janus Motorcycles. We want to leave our limits behind and grow our company into something lasting and sustainable. It’s time to make what we’re passionate about even better. The backbone of the new Janus Motorcycles will be two new 250 motorcycles and our new line of leather and canvas goods designed with motorcyclists in mind:
Launching an entirely new line of motorcycles and products requires more money, more community support, and more hard work.
What can you do to help Janus Motorcycles have its best year yet?
1. You can order a hand-made leather-good for your own adventures (and help us with ours). Check out each item below.
3. You can contribute to join us at our “Flight of the Phoenix” bash this summer to celebrate with us and our community.
4. You can share our company and story with your friends. We'll be posting lots of updates as we get our motorcycles ever closer to full production!
We designed this Kickstarter campaign to embody our values—we want to provide a valuable incentive to our supporters, sustain our suppliers, and help launch the next epoch in the history of Janus motorcycles—the Phoenix & Halcyon 250! We feel there’s no better time to re-align our business for a greater good, and a successful Kickstarter is a perfect first step in realizing that vision. We hope you’ll agree.
Our leather & canvas goods are made by the same expert leather craftsman who makes our seats and saddlebags. While we work on prototyping, testing, and producing our new motorcycles, we’re more than happy to support a local craftsman. We want to spend our days obsessing over making the best possible motorcycle, and this allows us to do it.
Waxed canvas and full-grain leather construction, hand-hammered copper rivets on stress points, and our proprietary 6061 Aircraft-grade aluminum buckles ensure each of these goods will work & wear hard, feel good, and last a very long time. We're confident that there's no motorcycle gear on the market that marries form and function so well.
We specifically designed the Moto-Rucksack to be an ideal carry-all for a motorcyclist, with adjustable shoulder straps and security strap, durable aluminum closures, waterproof lining, and removable D3O back armor (included).
We designed our Leather & Canvas Rucksack with classic styling cues, eschewing the too-typical space-suit look for something more timeless. This rucksack looks good when you're not on your motorcycle, too.
You ride a good looking bike. Your bag doesn't need to look like a traffic cone. We designed the messenger bag to be a comfortable, secure, and aesthetically striking commuter & daily bag. The durable waxed canvas and leather construction, leather shoulder strap, reflective accents, secure closures, and waterproof liner make it an ideal every-day carry. The interior includes a small pocket for pens, and a sleeve for a tablet or small laptop. Spitting snow on autumn's last ride? Big meeting at work? The Moto-Messenger's going to look good and work well for either.
3. Worker's Apron
Our leather-goods craftsman uses the same leather for saddle repairs and horse bridles. It lasts and lasts around a half-ton horse's neck, and it'll do the same around yours. The oil, dust, grease, and weld spatter just add to its patina. Get your hands dirty, but not your shirt.
4. Janus Motorcycle Tank Bag
The Janus Tank bag is built from full-grain leather and waxed canvas, with a water-resistant lining and vinyl window for maps or smartphone directions. Rare-earth magnets and leather straps provide a secure connection for most all tank and frame types.
The main compartment is reinforced to hold its shape and provides great storage for smaller items like wallet, gloves, keys, phone, small tools, and more! Secured with a 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum buckle. Built to look great and last trip after trip.
5. Tool Roll
Our tool roll is made of Martexin Gridwax waxed canvas, and the sturdy leather strap doubles as a belt, transforming the roll into a small apron when you need your tools near-at-hand on the fly. Features various pocket sizes for a perfect on-the-road tool set and a leather pencil and tire-gauge sleeve. Grommets let you hang it wherever you need it, and copper rivets make it nearly-indestructible.
Simple. It's impossible to make canvas, leather, and copper fit better together than in this classic tote. Perfect for your helmet, picnics, quick runs to the farmer's market, impromptu trips to the beach, and more. Two leather handles and a shoulder strap let you wear it however you'd like.

Risks and challenges
We choose to ride two-wheeled vehicles.
We had the audacity to start a motorcycle production company in the American Midwest.
Risk is something that hasn’t dissuaded us from action before, and it won’t now.
Our risk in this campaign is putting our work and our product out there and not reaching our goal. What happens then? We may not be able to put our motorcycle in front of as many people, we may have to wait to build up our production capacity, but we won’t give up easily, and will continue to bootstrap our company to success. A successful campaign will make this year even more fulfilling than it already is.
If our campaign fails, there’s no risk to our supporters. We’ll give you the option to still receive your “Kickstarter edition” item at the Kickstarter price. If you don’t want it anymore, you don’t have to have it. In fact, we can’t remember when we’ve seen a better proposition.
Why believe us?
We’ve worked our way through the last decade creating custom motorcycles and bringing numerous performance parts to market. Our days are spent designing, prototyping, tuning, wiring, assembling, painting, testing, and delivering fully-functional motorcycles to delighted customers around the world.
Our riding experience helped us design unique goods with the motorcyclist or cyclist in mind, with safety and functional features tuned to the demands of the road. Our leathergoods production is led by an Amish craftsman with decades of experience. He’s a true artisan, with the know-how to make long-lasting, functional, durable, and beautiful goods. And we stand behind all of our products 100%.
Our campaign’s goal is NOT to help us start something we’ve not yet tried. Building top-notch, unique motorcycles and goods is what we already do.
Our campaign’s goal is to kickstart the next chapter in our company’s life.
