About this project
My name is Nuri Steinhauer, and I create in many different mediums. I am both a traditional artist and a fiber artist: in addition to drawing and painting in physical and digital media, I compose unique combinations of fiber and color and make them available to spinners, felters, and crafters worldwide. I also have a project website that features a blog, Etsy shop, and various tutorials for fiber artists of all skill levels. The fiber products I currently create and sell include hand-dyed yarns, upcycled yarns, handspun yarns, hand-dyed combed wool top, and small hand-carded batts. I draw my inspiration for the color and fiber combinations from subjects I'm passionate about (such as the Firefly TV show and 80s Cartoons). Here are a few examples:
Earth Kingdom Yarn (inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Twilight Sparkle Fiber (inspired by My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)
What I want to do is build a cohesive collection of art and fiber with two stages of inspiration and creation. The funds from this project will be used to buy some additional supplies and equipment to dye yarn and fiber as well as a carder to blend the fiber together. This will help me develop a collection of yarn and blended fiber batts inspired by and complimentary to an existing series of my artwork (my Zodiac Girls) and a future series of my artwork (inspired by backers). The collection I want to make will contain:
- Twelve colorways of dyed yarn and dyed & carded fiber batts, each inspired by one of the Zodiac Girls, as already drawn; and,
- Twelve new pieces of traditional art, each inspired by a non-zodiac constellation, which will be chosen by and drawn for an exclusive set of project backers; and
- Twelve additional colorways of dyed yarn and dyed & carded fiber batts, each inspired by one of the new constellation characters drawn for the backers.
This project gives me the chance to combine all of my artistic passions and create something that can be shared with everyone. The final collection and corresponding artwork will photographed for display online before being sent to various backers.
In return for your support, I want you to be the first to try out this new yarn & fiber collection. As soon as the supplies and equipment arrive, I will begin work on the new line. I will send you a gift inspired by the project as my personal thanks for backing my project!
I work with all kinds of fiber, from fleece straight off the sheep to dyed bamboo fibers. I love the entire process: from cleaning the fiber, dyeing it, preparing it, spinning it, and eventually turning it into something wearable. In fiber form, I work with various wools, alpaca, bamboo, soysilk, cashmere, silk, angora rabbit, yak, extrafine merino wool, cormo wool, camel, neon acrylic, and sparkles... and more! The only fiber I do not work with as a matter of policy is mohair (angora goat) because my skin is sensitive to it, though I love to watch it from a distance.
My artwork is an insistent creative outlet. Have you ever had one of those nights where you lie awake in bed with an idea that you just have to get up and work with before you can sleep? That's how my traditional art usually starts. I am particularly fond of working with markers and watercolors in a cartoon style. You can see more of my traditional media work in this gallery.
Working with fiber to create lovely supplies that I, or others, can use to make something beautiful is an activity that gives me a sense of inner peace, while drawing and designing new characters allows me a creative outlet. With your help and support of my campaign, I'll be able to take my fiber production to the next level and bring even more beautiful color combinations and fiber arts into the world.
