About

Sorry our campaign has been cancelled. But it's not too late to discover Xmodule! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to be updated with our news!

Xmodule is a sci-fi car racing game that allows you to fully customize your car and 3D print it. The aim of this project is to give the gamer the feeling of being the creator as there are thousands of customisation possibilities.

You won't be able to create your car only onscreen but also physically. Indeed, as you progress through the game, you unlock more and more car parts and everytime a new part is available, you can also have access to the 3D files. In this way, you will hold in your hands the model you have created.

Features:

  • Career mode.
  • Thousands of car customisation possibilities.
  • 3 different car modules.
  • 2 customisable characters.
  • 8 race tracks.
  • STL files to 3D print cars and characters.
  • Dubstep and Drum & Bass music.

You’ll start the game choosing between different car modules (car settings). The engine position, dimension and weight all differ.

You won’t be able to change your module during the race and there aren’t any new cars to unlock. You have to build and improve your chosen module in order to win. During the race there are no power ups or weapons, so the only way to be succesful is to build a great car and to drive it as fast as you can. We want you to learn how to drift in the corners, as that's the only way to recharge the boost.

Huge wheels and futuristic car shapes give Xmodule a unique style full of colours. Everything is exaggerated, the wheels protrude outside the chassis to generate more grip.

As a sci-fi game the environment is full of steel and futuristic structures. The cars have been created taking inspiration from the RC world trying to apply the same proportions in 1:1 cars.

The proportions are realistic but we decided to use a cartoon style with saturated colours and great contrast to emphasise the suggestion of something unreal and to have the chance to experiment more with the graphics.

The game is focused on speed and creativity, we don't want you to just pick up one car and run, we want you to express yourself combining the car parts that you like the most. The concept car you create will become your personal project.

In the garage you have the chance to customize everything, from the tires and wheels to the engine parts. The more races you win, the more car parts you will have available. Also, the components affect your performance so you have to choose them based on the kind of track you are going to do.

We’re trying to create something unique and in order to do that it's important to have a strong design. We want to mix the sci-fi world with the cartoon style using real proportions.

The characters will have futuristic clothes and suits. You’ll also be able to customize them to create the best match between car and pilot.

By changing shirts, trousers, shoes and colors they will look exactly as you want. We leave you the power to decide almost everything about cars and characters. And, most importantly, you can 3D print them all!

The gameplay and the music give you an incredible adrenaline feeling. Xmodule has Drum & Bass soundtracks provided by the musician Panda Eyes.

In here you can check some of the soundtracks.

The 3D printing aspect is what makes this game unique. Using primarily 3D softwares, hundreds of items have been designed both as virtual items and as physical STLs. The physical models are simply encrypted so that they can be unlocked with the in-game achievements.

3D Hubs an online 3D printing service is our official partner, so if you don’t have a 3D printer you can print the cars and characters through their network. Every time you unlock a new component you simply upload the STL file you get on our website's API system and you'll be redirected to 3D Hubs to find a local service provider to order your print.

We are working hard on prototyping all the components and making them easy to assemble just by specific joints between each part, without using any glue. The materials used so far are ABS and PLA.

Indeed, if you have a 3D printer, things are even easier and cheaper for you. We have estimated that, with a 2 kgs filament costing around 20 euros, you'll be able to 3D print 5-6 full cars!

The characters will be divided into different prints too, so that you can interchange upper and bottom parts and create lots of looks. It will all work with joints, exactly like the cars.

Xmodule is developed by G21 studio - a husband and wife independent video games studio based in Dublin. We believe in the power of creativity, so much so that we want our players to be part of the creative process while playing with our games.

Daniele Frau - I was born in Sardinia, Italy in 1987 and I've always been pretty creative since I was a kid. My parents gave me lots of Lego and I was obsessed with drawing almost anything. This passion grew since I was in high school when I started drawing cars for fun. In 2010 I started my first year at the European Institute of design and I aimed to become a car designer, but I discovered a deeper passion there, the CGI. I started collaborating with some teachers and step by step I discovered a new me, a passionate and ambitious student with the certainty to finally have found my way. I put all my efforts in those years to learn as much as I could working during the night moved from an enthusiasm that I've never felt before. I really fell in love with my job. After the IED I collaborated with one of the best Italian Graphic Designer, Alessandro Cortes. He taught me how to approach clients and to organize the work. In 2014 I was hired from a videogame company in Dublin as a 3D Artist. I learned a lot from that experience, I improved my skills and knowledges on creating videogames. Although that job wasn't enough, after the “daily job” when I was at home I always needed to fully express myself drawing and creating personal projects. This need became bigger and bigger since I realized what really could make me happy: a project with all of my passions together, and then Xmodule came out! But I was scared of leaving my job for something I didn't know how it would go. And here Marina, my wife, had a big role. She convinced me to believe in my dreams, to do this big jump because I wasn't alone. To be honest, this project has been harder than I thought, but she helps me to keep going and I probably wouldn't have the courage to do it if it wasn't for her.

Marina Pisu - I'm a 25 years old woman from Sardinia, Italy. I studied languages since I was a kid and, after my Diploma, I got a degree in Nursing. I met Daniele in 2010. When he got a job and moved to Dublin, we organised our wedding in 3 months. On the 13th December 2014 we were husband and wife and, 2 days after, I was in Dublin with him. Xmodule came into his mind a few months later and sounded like a really cool idea to me. But quiting your safe job for something unsure is such a big decision. I had the feeling that this would be worthwhile and so I convinced him to leave the job and work full time on this project. He finally did in September 2015. Since then I've been working as a nurse to cover all the expenses and, when I'm free I look after the social media and public relations. I post relevant content on our channels and I search for events to showcase our game. I've found another way to help him that I really enjoy. It's easy to tell people how great our project is because I really think it is. I see him so happy and passionate about Xmodule that I don't regret a thing. This is a family project that I'm so proud of. However, what else a wife can do rather than support her husband?

Xmodule will be available for PC and Mac. We will release an early access in August 2016 and the final game in February 2017. We want to take our time in order to create a beautiful game full of great graphics. In order to do that we need your help. We would require better 3D printers to finish prototyping all the components, a place to work on it and the collaboration of a developer. The rest of the money will be used for taxes, fees and special expenses such as the music.

Risks and challenges

If Xmodule will be funded you are allowing us to keep working full time on this game. Developing games might be hard but when it coincides with your passion you don't feel like you are actually working. We have lots of projects and ideas for the future of Xmodule and we just need the chance to express them.
This is not a project at the beginning, we've worked full time on it for 7 months already. The main challenge could be the 3D printing aspect but with the big help of 3D Hubs and new 3D printers we'll be able to prototype each part to give you a perfect copy of the game cars and characters.
