About this project
Why we want to make this film -
Like many parents we are concerned about the disconnect between food and health. We want to do something to reconnect our food and our health in our own family. And we want to share our experiences with you.
Food Patriots is a documentary film that shows what happens when we try to change the way we eat, buy and teach the next generation about food. Our film and our misadventures with backyard chickens are already making news and sparking new conversations about food.
Food Patriots are remarkable people whose stories show what is possible in our own homes, backyards, neighborhoods, suburbs, schools, colleges, companies and even sports teams. As you watch our family's relationship with food and chickens you will see why we turn to Food Patriots for inspiration. Food Patriots are reviving World War Two Victory Gardens, transforming city buses into mobile grocery stores, turning vacant inner city lots into thriving urban farms and improving people's relationships with food at every level. We go on the road to meet them all. Our goal is not to be just like them. Our goal is to shift by just 10% toward eating more fresh, local, organic or healthier choice foods.
The journey leads to a banquet of inspirational stories and our share of humble pie.
How did the family journey begin? A few years ago we got a wake up call. Our teenage son, the big football player, came home from school with a mean stomach ache. Hours went by and it only got worse. The only way we could take him to the hospital was in an adult diaper. His food borne illness was resistant to antibiotics and as he withered before our eyes we were thrown into a surreal conversation about health and food.
That conversation is not limited to just our family. In the film we show how a food borne illness opens our eyes to larger health and environmental concerns that are forcing more and more Americans to question where their food comes from and what is in it. More importantly, our film shows what we can all do about it.
We have filmed unforgettable stories across America, and especially in the Midwest, for over two years and need to raise $15,000 to cover the cost of editing our footage through the rough cut stage. We want to complete the rough cutting by December 31st so we can begin showing our feature-length film to prospective broadcasters and film festivals. Your support will be applied right now to pay for the following post production expenses:
- Editing suite rental
- Color correction
- Audio mix
- Archival footage rights
Our amazing editor, John Farbrother, is known for his brilliant work on the internationally acclaimed film, Louder Than a Bomb, a feature-length documentary that has screened and won top awards at numerous film festivals.
We will begin to screen the full-length cut selectively in partnership with local and national good food organizations that will help us plant the seeds for a national launch later in 2013. We are already sharing our webisodes and a demo at colleges, music festivals, health conferences, faith-based organizations and living rooms. With your support we can continue the editing and begin screening the full version of the film in January.

How can I help spread the word?
By getting personally involved. Invite some friends over or organize a community event and share this humorous, uplifting story. The film reflects the momentum that we as individuals can generate collectively, and how through the small step of changing our relationship to food, we trigger a ripple effect that influences our families, neighbors and the food landscape.

How Kickstarter Works:
Pledge any amount you’d like and choose one of the listed incentives as your reward. If the total pledges meet our $15,000 goal by the end of our Kickstarter campaign, the credit cards of those who pledged will be charged and we’ll receive the funds. If we don't meet our goal, your pledge money won’t be withdrawn from your account and no incentives are provided. If we exceed $15,000 in pledge money, we’ll use the extra funds to pay for music, color correction, sound design, archival rights, application fees for the film festivals and packaging so that Food Patriots can be launched officially in 2013. You can also increase your pledge once it’s been made. If you want to increase your pledge amount, sign in to Kickstarter and access our campaign page. The green “Back This Project” button on our page will have been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click this to enter a new amount.
Can we exceed the goal?
Absolutely. We’ll receive all money pledged before our campaign deadline.

Risks and challenges
In making Food Patriots, we anticipated the inevitable challenges of the filmmaking process. There are many elements that are not entirely predictable, including equipment malfunctions, weather, staffing, and of course, not having enough funding to complete post-production. We have met every challenge and generated many news stories about Food Patriots as a film in progress.
We are experienced documentary filmmakers with an internationally acclaimed model for social impact filmmaking. The Return of Navajo Boy, our previous film, is an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival & PBS and has won numerous awards at film festivals in the USA and Canada. Our combination of filmmaking and outreach has a proven track record. Our team is 100% committed to meeting any and all challenges as we complete and launch this timely film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
