I'm Mike Fenn, an artist and graphic designer from Toronto who has a passion for all things nerdy. I love gaming, reading comics, watching movies and most of all I love creating my own art. Over the past couple years I started going to cons. Immediately I was drawn in by the passion and inclusiveness that was shown by everyone attending. Cosplayers were a family, always reaching out to introduce themselves, share their common interests and help each other out when they needed tweaks or fixes to their costume.
I got to thinking about putting together an art book compiling concept art style portraits of cosplayers with individual profiles. I did some research and discovered that not only did such a book not exist but that it was something that people were very interested in. I reached out to a couple friends in the community and got an overwhelming response of people who wanted to be featured in the book. The project will feature twenty-five local cosplayers, their stories, how they craft their costumes along with the paintings.
The hope is to be able to sell the books at Toronto Fan Expo in early September as well as online and see where that takes me. The money I raise is to cover the cost of renting the booth and printing the books.

What We Need
All funding provided through this campaign will go towards the creation and distribution of The Art of Cosplay. Costs include ordering proofs, printing, booths at the con(s) and shipping books and poster prints to backers and contributors. All contributing cosplayers will receive a poster print. In the event that the financial goal isn't reached, I will use the money raised to self publish copies of the book and make them available online.
What You'll Get
The Art of Cosplay is a perfect bound soft cover book at around 60 pages. The book would consist of short bios of the cosplayer, their character, and how they crafted the costume, alongside a digital painting of them dressed as the character in a concept art style.

Risks and challenges
Self Publishing a book is scary as hell. Especially when doing it for the first time. A big risk for me has to do with timing of the project. Toronto Fan Expo happens in the first weekend of September, however buying a booth happens much earlier than that. That means I've had to speed up my development schedule. There is always the chance that the convention booths will have filled up by the time I get this project funded. If that were to happen I would use the money reserved for the booth to ship all the books that were meant to be picked picked up in person.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
