Gypsy Donut is the result of several years of planning by a group of friends with one goal—to bring incredibly delicious, well made and high-quality artisan donuts and coffee to our beloved village of Nyack, NY.
Handcrafted donuts made fresh from scratch every day. Unique flavors and toppings (cookies and cream! graham cracker! maple bacon! Nutella frosted...) and local produce wherever possible.
Gypsy Donut will work to use high-quality ingredients, including fair-trade coffee products, organic dairy and more. We're also developing a line of all-organic donuts, which will include seasonal fruits from our local farmers' market. We'll recycle, provide coffee grounds and other materials for composting, and more.
Gypsy Donut is proud to say that we'll be serving up Stumptown coffee at our shop in Nyack. Stumptown makes absolutely incredible coffee, which they roast in Brooklyn. Based out of Portland, Oregon, the company's buyers work with farms and growers all over the world, sourcing Direct Trade coffee and ensuring that their product is fresh and fantastic.
Beans will come to us weekly and we'll grind them on premises. We will also sell bags of Stumptown Coffee, brewing gear and provide education on the best ways to prepare coffee and espresso at home.
We also believe in improving the lives of our employees and our community so we'll participate in local events like the Mostly Music Festival, provide our coffee grounds to the local community garden, work with the Village on green initiatives, and take suggestions from our customers about programs and plans we should enact.
Any leftover donuts will go to the local food pantries and the Nyack Center and we'll have educational classes for schools and student programs.
We'll also have events (coffee and donut parings, music, classes and more) for grownups as well.
If you like the restaurant and bar scene in Nyack, we're planning to be open late on weekends to provide some snacks for you to help finish off your night.
Oh, and we'll be providing donut delivery via cargo bike and bike trailer within the Nyack/South Nyack area.
But donuts and coffee means lots of gear, and the space (even though it was a kitchen) needs a lot of work.
Your contribution will go to purchasing the equipment, setting up our space and getting our staff trained in the latest programs in fair-trade coffee production.
Some of the gear needed for donut design is expensive—things like fryers, donut proofers (the big temperature controlled boxes that make the donuts fluffy and awesome), icing machines, espresso machines, coffee makers, water filters, coolers, and freezers have price tags in the thousands of dollars.
We're also using our own funds for this (each of the partners is contributing to the company to launch) but the price of much of this gear makes it too expensive to do it ourselves. We've included more than $25,000 of our own money but need this Kickstarter push to get everything we need. (Because you can't make a donut with most of the equipment, you've got to have it all.)
More About Us
The principals of Gypsy Donut have been friends for decades and have some interesting backgrounds that come together perfectly for this business.
David is a lifelong foodie and loves to cook for people more than just about anything. He's the founder of several businesses that have been run from Nyack and is an expert in social marketing and e-commerce. (Look forward to an app for donut ordering.)
BJ (who is married to Maia, see below) is an incredible set and building carpenter and craftsman. He'll be handling the design and build-out for the space. He's (literally) taken houses apart piece by piece and moved them across the country.
His dog, Gypsy, was the inspiration for the name of the shop. (And it'll fit in nicely when we start delivering our donuts as well.)
Danielle and Matthew Watson own Eyevolution Optique, the best eyewear store/eye doctor anywhere. Danielle has chaired the Friends of the Nyacks and is incredibly dedicated to helping the Nyack business scene.
Maia and Saskia are sisters with tons of food service experience, having worked for a variety of companies that catered movies and TV shows (like Ed, The Sopranos and Sex in the City) and Saskia ran a cafe/bakes
Foster Bass is a native Nyacker whose love of food service dates back to his teenage triumph behind the counter of Temptations in the 80′s. He has since done time on various community boards, including Friends of the Nyacks, the Nyack Library, Riverspace, and others, volunteering his software engineering skills as needed. Foster and his new bride Katie are advisory members.
Throw in a group of eager friends with varying histories in retail, food service, art, design and you've got yourself one heck of a sweet shop.
We have signing the lease and we're hoping to open the first week in March.
