My name is John Hoobyar. I’m doing this Kickstarter campaign to raise money to pursue a rare opportunity for artistic development and cultural exchange.
I have been awarded the danceWEB scholarship to attend ImPulsTanz in Vienna this summer—Europe’s largest dance festival. This year, out of more than 1000 applicants from around the globe, I am one of sixty-six to receive the danceWEB scholarship and one of only eight Americans.
WHAT AM I ASKING FOR?
I am asking for contributions to enable my participation in danceWEB this summer. The scholarship covers two thirds of my tuition costs but I am required to finance the last third of tuition—$2500. In addition, I am responsible for covering my own airfare, food, and living expenses in Vienna, bringing my total fundraising goal to $4500. For this campaign I have set a goal of $4000—I hope to raise the rest through other funding sources.
WHY DO I NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
I am fortunate to work in New York as a freelance performer, writer and arts administrator at Pentacle/DanceWorks, Inc., but attending ImPulsTanz for five weeks, even on partial scholarship, is beyond my means. If I do not pay the remaining $2500 tuition by June 1 then I will lose my place in the program.
WHAT WILL I BRING TO AN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL?
I bring to ImPulsTanz my particular experiences of dance in both theatrical and visual arts contexts in the US, including at major American theater and museum institutions such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Museum, MoMA PS1, and the Walker Arts Center. I believe that dance holds a political potential to challenge conformity and to create space for alternative ways of being and moving through the world. I look forward to dialoguing with artists from around the globe about the aesthetic position of dance in relationship to theater and visual arts and the political potential of dance in the US and abroad. These conversations will plant the seeds of artistic relationships with international artists that will continue to generate cross-cultural dialogue and exchange long after the festival ends.
WHAT DOES THE DANCEWEB SCHOLARSHIP ENTAIL, SPECIFICALLY?
As a participant in danceWEB, I will benefit from the following at ImpulsTanz:
- artistic accompaniment by the danceWEB mentor Tino Sehgal & his team
- participation in the Research Projects of ImPulsTanz 2016
- participation in the technique workshops of ImPulsTanz 2016
- admission to all productions of ImPulsTanz 2016
- exchange of ideas and contact with international teachers, choreographers and visual artists present at ImPulsTanz 2016
- special projects exclusively offered to the danceWEB scholarship holders 2016
- representation in the yearly growing, international danceWEB database
- lecture demonstrations & talks
- accommodation in Vienna for the entire period of the Scholarship Programme (five weeks)

Massive thanks to Sarah Konner and Bradley Teal Ellis for dancing in my video with me and to Victoria Sendra for filming.
Thanks also to Catherine Galasso, Christopher Williams, Karl Rogers, and Rebecca Patek for providing photo and video content for my campaign video.
Thanks to Minden for the music! The track is called "Books (Instrumental)" and you can check out their full album here!
Risks and challenges
Attending ImpulsTanz will likely be as challenging as I hope it to be rewarding. This will be the first time that I've been away from New York for longer than two weeks in the five years that I've lived here. Even if I make my Kickstarter goal, it will be financially trying to not be working to pay my rent back in New York while I'm away. All that said, I'm happy to already know some of the artists who will be at ImpulsTanz this summer and look forward to creating a new community and support network at the festival.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
