2013 Storm season is ramping up! Help us accomplish our goal to get us even closer to the storms! We cannot do this without your help.
Tornado Junkies: Intercept Vehicle Build
Thank you for checking out our Kickstarter Project! We cannot do this without YOUR HELP!
We are the Tornado Junkies, a group out of Des Moines that shares one main goal: to keep the public safe! We travel thousands of miles all over tornado alley, chasing storms. When we chase, we report weather conditions through storm spotter systems, the National Weather Service, and social media, which aids in the storm warning process. When we, or any storm chasing team, are out, we can make visual reports, which increases the amount of time you and your loved ones have to get to safety. When we see a tornado, our very first action is reporting it, so that a tornado warning can be issued. We want to keep you and the ones you love safe. This is why we chase. We chase for you.
By pledging to our project, you will help fund our 2013 web-series. Through this series you will see the challenges and achievements of our chase team. We would like to share the unique storm chasing experience with YOU! You will see what we see: the emotion, the action, and the thrill. Storm chasing is an experience that few people get to see, and by sharing this web-series with you, you will be able to see a side of weather not often seen. Not only will you witness the power of the storms, we will present the beauty these supercells can create, all through brilliant time-lapses and high-definition video. Experience mother nature’s fury with us through a whole new perspective. Our goal amount will allow us to purchase the final materials for our intercept vehicle mentioned in the video above. Once it is completed, we will be able to get even closer to the storms and share the extreme experiences through each of our webisodes that YOU have made possible with your pledges and support! Thank you in advance for all of your help.
Meet the Tornado Junkies Chase Team:
“I have been a fan of storms since I was a little boy growing up in Michigan. My earliest storms I remember were: fleeing a tornado in the back of a pick-up truck when visiting family in Alabama; my dad telling us he saw the tornado coming and to hit the basement while my sister and I ran outside instead to go see it; and standing underneath the sky with my mom in our yard as the whole thing rotated around me. This (along with the movie Twister like every other weather enthusiast) led me to start to study Meteorology to better understand the science behind severe weather. I will be finishing my education in Meteorology this May 2013. I have been chasing storms for the last 3 years and can't wait to combine my chase experience with my weather knowledge. I also became a Certified Skywarn Spotter in 2012. I chase not just for the thrill, but for the knowledge of storms. I also have the goal of keeping others safe and use Social Media, the Skywarn Spotter System, and NWS reports to help keep the general public safe.”

“For the longest time, my main passion in life has been working with cars. This May I will be graduating from DMACC with my Associates Degree in Automotive Collision Technology, having studied the mechanics and structural science of vehicles. Being a Midwesterner also gives me a strong connection to severe weather. I have been inside many severe storms, and the power these storms can have always leaves me in awe. I am amazed at how nature can produce something so small and detailed like a snowflake, or so large and organized like a supercell thunderstorm. I have decided to pursue my passion for weather and apply my knowledge of vehicles to create a tornado intercept vehicle. By doing so, our team will be able to not only document our experience to share with other severe weather fans (like you), but will also allow us to get even closer to severe weather and obtain photographs and videos, which will aid in the knowledge of these storms. We are hoping that this project, which can be completed with your help, will help us to pursue our dreams of getting close to severe weather, and also to better the public’s knowledge of storms. You can look into some of the photography I have done thus far on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DSAuelPhotography.”

“When I was sixteen years old, I was handed my first camera—that’s where it all started. Since then, I have developed my passion for photography and put much effort into developing my skill. Whether it is shooting extreme weather like supercell thunderstorms in Tornado Alley, or out in the wilderness to shoot the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis, I have discovered how beautiful our world is; these are experiences that I want to share with you! At twenty years old, I am looking to turn this passion into a career and I am hoping this Kickstarter project will help me with that. Building an intercept vehicle is not an easy task, but, when completed, it will definitely bring a lot of rewards. We have come so close to finishing this project, and we cannot stop now! We need your help to make our dreams a reality. Thank you to everyone who took the time to check out our project, and even bigger thanks to all our contributors! If you would like to check out my photography, please visit my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Brennan-Jontz-Photography/”
We have done all that we can, and now it is up to you to help us accomplish our mission. Not only will you be able to see our work in action, you will also be entitled to some great rewards for aiding our cause, such as posters, t-shirts, DVDs, even get your name on the vehicle itself! We would like to thank all of you in advance for your generous contributions. This project would be impossible without you! You can stay up-to-date with our progress at our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TornadoJunkies
THANK YOU FOR BELIEVING IN US!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
As one would assume, there are many challenges in building a tornado intercept vehicle. For one, there are only a few in existence, and because there are not many models to go off of, we had to do a lot of brainstorming and testing to make this vehicle a reality. We have overcome many challenges thus far: the original vehicle we were using did not have a functioning motor, so we were going to have to rebuild. Then, we were able to get a new vehicle with a working motor, but had to transfer the body we had already built onto the new vehicle. There are also many risks involved. Weather is unpredictable, especially when it comes to extreme weather. That is why we are trying to make this vehicle as sturdy and safe as possible. Of course, this hikes up the cost of supplies. Parking inside a tornado will be very dangerous, but we are hoping that with the funds you help provide, we will be able to purchase instruments to measure the full force of a tornado and raise the knowledge of these devastating natural disasters.
