David is a director in the process of writing a personal play dealing with his own failed marriage one year prior. Having built a reputation in the London theatre scene, he views this upcoming project as his magnum opus. He pays no attention to his ex-wife or any of the real aspects of his life he should be dealing with responsibly, but instead spends his nights in his office study, perfecting and fleshing out his idealistic woman.
After making the decision to write himself a role in his upcoming play, we see him slowly spiral into obsession as he treats the lead actress Nadia with dismay, only focusing on her when she is playing the role of Ellen. His direction becomes more and more bitter towards Nadia, as she soon becomes completely alienated from her self-absorbed director, pushed to her limits to recreate this dream character of David’s.
We believe this film is more than relevant to audiences that may have dealt with a person that expects too much of them in a relationship, or care to admit they may have had these selfish thoughts themselves also. We are attempting to create an artistic portrayal of someone who is so disillusioned by their experiences in relationships that they attempt to artificially create their own through the medium of theatre, as well as the innate desire to create a perfect reality through means of an art form.
We will be using very chaotic camera movements, to present David's direction towards Nadia, much like 'Black Swan'. Nadia and David will also be very distant in the frame, with Nadia often shown only through reflections. Whilst as the character of Ellen, she will be presented in tightly framed shots. This will show David's obsession and control of her.
